John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Does the Existence of the Mind Provide Evidence for God?

Recommended Posts

by J.P. Moreland

Many believe that finite (limited) minds provide evidence of a divine mind as their Creator. If we limit our options to theism and naturalism, it is hard to see how finite consciousness could result from the rearrangement of brute matter; it is easier to see how a conscious Being could produce finite consciousness.

This argument assumes a commonsense understanding of conscious states such as sensations, thoughts, beliefs, desires, and volitions. So understood, mental states are in no sense physical since they possess four features not owned by physical states:

1: There is a raw qualitative feel, or a “what it is like,” to have a mental state such as a pain.

2: Many mental states have intentionality-- being or aboutness-- directed toward an object (for example, a thought about the moon).

3: Mental states are inner, private, and immediate to the subject having them.

4: Mental states fail to have crucial features (for instance, spatial extension and location) that characterize physical states and, in general, cannot be described using physical language.

Given that conscious states are immaterial and not physical, at least two reasons have been offered for why there can be no natural scientific explanation for the existence of conscious states:

Something from nothing. Before consciousness appeared, the universe contained nothing but aggregates of particles/waves standing in fields of forces. The naturalistic story of the cosmos’s evolution involves the rearrangement of atomic parts into increasingly more complex structures according to natural law. Matter is brute, mechanical, physical stuff. The emergence of consciousness seems to be a case of getting something from nothing. In general, physico-chemical reactions do not generate consciousness. Some say they do in the brain, yet brains seem similar to other parts of organisms’ bodies (e.g., both are collections of cells totally describable in physical terms). How can like causes produce radically different effects? The appearance of mind is utterly unpredictable and inexplicable. This radical discontinuity seems like rupture in the natural world.

The inadequacy of evolutionary explanations. Naturalists claim that evolutionary explanations can be provided for the appearance of all organisms and their parts. In principle, an evolutionary account could be given for increasingly complex physical structures that constitute different organisms. It is clear that as long as an organism, when receiving certain inputs, generates the correct behavioral outputs under the demands of reproductive advantage, the organism will survive. What goes on inside the organism is irrelevant and becomes significant for the processes of evolution only when an output is produced. Strictly speaking, it is the output, not what caused it, that impacts the struggle for reproductive advantage. Moreover, the functions organisms carry out consciously could just as well have been done unconsciously. Thus both the sheer existence of conscious states and the precise mental content that constitutes them is outside the pale of evolutionary explanation.

It will not do to claim that consciousness simply emerged from matter when it reached a certain level of complexity, because “emergence” is merely a label for, and not an explanation of, the phenomena to be explained.

NEW YORK, NY—Columbia University archeologists have uncovered evidence that Noah may have had regrets about allowing geese onto the ark. On an expedition to Turkey to examine underwater remains of what researchers believe is the ark that Noah built to survive the biblical flood, journals were discovered and taken back to the University to be authenticated. • The Media, Without Evidence, Claims Conservatives Furious Over Ocasio-Cortez Dancing Video

By Joe Simonson - Virtually every media outlet claimed conservatives were “outraged” by a video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing as a college student. The source of these articles was a single anonymous Twitter account, with a handful of other trolls joining in. The incident was just the latest example of the media manufacturing right-wing outrage. Obviously, the media is under the impression that there aren’t enough things to mock Republicans for at the beginning of 2019, or it wouldn’t have completely contrived a controversy Friday about how there was wide right-wing outrage over an insipid video of Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing during her days as an undergraduate at Boston University. Yes, it is true that some anonymous troll accounts snickered at the congresswoman’s twirling on top of what appeared to be a building somewhere in Boston. Other disreputable outlets, like The Gateway Pundit, have made a number of desperate attempts to make her seem inauthentic by commenting on the fact that she was born and raised in a relatively affluent suburb of New York. Most of these attempts, it should be noted, have been wholeheartedly dismissed by mainstream conservative commentators as ineffective and asinine. Yet that didn’t stop virtually major news outlets from spreading the narrative that conservatives are somehow captivated with the silly video of a young Ocasio-Cortezdancing. Vox’s Matthew Yglesias wrote an “explainer” about the right’s “obsession” with her days as a teenager, citing a total of four tweets — one of which was from a Twitter account that no longer even exists. GQ, once a magazine that printed arguments about why every man should own $200 socks, declared that right-wing media “failed” to “take down” Ocasio-Cortez and even cited The Daily Caller. Problem is, The Daily Caller never once mocked her for dancing (it remains unclear how the video even opens her up to criticism) but instead poked fun at her socialist policy proposals in a tweet. Even the United States’ supposed paper of record, The New York Times, covered the incident (if you can even call it that). The paper alleged that the release of the video, which had been circulating on social media for months, was supposed to be a “smear” by the right. Once again, The Times could only find a single anonymous twitter account mocking the video. The rest of the article was dedicated to leftist’s cheering her on. The news of the faux outrage even crossed the Atlantic, with BBC News covering how Ocasio-Cortez “mocks college dance critics.” That article, once again, failed to quote a single person upset about the video beyond the same anonymous Twitter account. This latest drama, which apparently rose to the level of an international incident, just served as another reminder of how desperate the media wishes to portray the GOP and its voters as something very different from what they truly are. Surely these outlets, and the reporters they work for, know that Ocasio-Cortez’s policy proposals (and her general ignorance of policy) are fair game for scrutiny — not just from the right but from average Americans. But the easiest way to avoid these important and material debates is to pretend that no one is willing to have them and instead tell the public that the right’s biggest problem with a young socialist in Congress who wants to hike income taxes to 70 percent is that she’s not a very good dancer.
