John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

probably not - China needs the USA

they have been getting away with theft and unfair trade practices for far too long

now they will have to learn how to be a responsible trading partner if they want to be a part of the international community

growing pains for china - better/fair deals for the usa

it will all work out wonderfully after everyone adjusts to the new equity

It sounds to me as if the trade war has already begun.

true - the war has been going on for decades

some trading partners have been behaving fairly - others not

now the unfair partners will have to learn to behave better

good news all around for everyone

it's fine to help struggling countries - but not a good idea to facilitate unethical trading practices

God Bless you my friend

We have been in a trade war for all of my life because we live in a Democratic Republic and everyone not here wants a piece of the action here. And I was born in 1945, that's a long fight and we have been losing lately, mostly due to Obama Administration.

What I think is that we are heading for a reckoning that will establish who it is that deserves to be respected in todays world.

yes- we certainly have not been respected for decades - because our politicians allowed us to be disrepected

one thing trump said in his book the art of the deal is that politicians don't care about a lot of things because it's not their money - it's our money - that's why they are so foolish in their political dealings

the only thing they care about is getting re-elected

they don't care about the country - states - counties - cities - families - citizens

I once heard a little joke about government.

If pro is the opposite of con then what is the opposite of progress?

    • China’s Plans for Global Dominance Include Supplanting the United States’ Leadership Position

By R. Mitchell - Anyone who doubts whether the world is once again immersed in great power competition should read the 2019 China Military Power Report released today by the Defense Intelligence Agency. The 140-page booklet explains China’s strategy and its efforts to supplant the United States and impose its rules on the international order. In a preface to the report, Army Lt. Gen. Robert P. Ashley, the DIA director, said that as China grows in strength and confidence, it will insist on “having a greater voice in global interactions, which at times may be antithetical to U.S. interests.” It’s modeled after the Reagan era’s Soviet Military Power series, and it uses the words of Chinese leaders and publications to make its case. It also details Chinese strategy and the history behind it. The report looks at China’s goals, detailing changes in the structures and commands in the People’s Liberation Army. It also looks at military modernization and the underlying goals of Chinese leaders. It serves as a primer for what the U.S. military must counter and where American money would best be spent. “With a deeper understanding of the military might behind Chinese economic and diplomatic efforts,” Ashley continued, “we can provide our own national political, economic, and military leaders the widest range of options for choosing when to counter, when to encourage, and when to join with China in actions around the world.” China refers to its military strategy as “active defense” which uses offensive actions if the government believes that an enemy may do something against the interests of China, even if the adversary takes no offensive action. Believing this modernization is needed for the country to achieve great power status, Chinese leaders are investing in capabilities across all domains of warfare. What it does with this new-found power is what concerns U.S. and allied leaders. China could impose its will in the region in Asia and around the globe. China’s threat matrix is not limited to global powers. In fact, its own internal reports list small local countries as primary threats: Border Disputes Investment and Modernization China began seriously investing in its military in 2000 and increased its spending by 10% per year until 2016 when it slowed to 5-to-7-percent growth. It is estimated that China spent more than $200 Billion on defense in 2018 which is a three-fold increase since 2002. The Chinese army, the PLA, and navy, the PLAN, are working to enhance their capability to project power globally. Transport aircraft from Russia and the first Chinese aircraft carrier will go a long way to allowing Beijing to move troops, supplies and equipment around the world. China’s carrier performed sea trials in 2018 and is expected to go into service in 2019. Counterspace China has a significant space presence including communications and intelligence satellites and now it is investing serious resources into anti-satellite weaponry. Conclusion China is investing vast sums of money and tremendous resources into modernizing its army and navy. While still years away from being able deploy a massive conventional force across the globe, it is a regional military superpower with significant conventional, nuclear, and space-based assets. China will use its capabilities to push disputed borders further out, reunify Taiwan with the mainland and increase its presence in the South China sea and Indian Ocean. Beijing will also continue its New Silk Road Belt and Road initiative to build ports for less-fortunate countries while indebting those nations to China. This new wave of soft-imperialism will create challenges for NATO, the European Union and the United States. Full 2019 China Military Power Report China-Military-Power-FINAL-5MB-20190103

    • Opioid Profiteering Family Headed Deceit Campaign Surrounding OxyContin, Documents Claim

By Evie Fordham - A Tuesday court filing claims that members of the Sackler family knew their company, Purdue Pharma, routinely failed to notify authorities that OxyContin was being abused and sold illegally, reported The New York Times. The Sacklers were the 19th-richest family in the U.S. in 2016 with an estimated $13 billion net worth, according to Forbes. TheDCNF began investigating the Sackler family’s charitable donations in fall 2017 in the series “American Cartel.” The first part of the series can be read here. Newly disclosed information about the Sackler family, who have made billions as owners of the drug company Purdue Pharma, show that they covered up the dangers of the moneymaking opioid OxyContin, a court filing released Tuesday claims. The filing also claims that members of the Sackler family knew Purdue Pharma routinely failed to notify authorities that OxyContin was being abused and sold illegally, reported The New York Times. The filing stems from Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey’s suit against Purdue Pharma alleging that the company misled doctors and patients about the risks of opioids to increase prescriptions. Healey filed the suit in June, one of many such suits that have been filed against Purdue Pharma in relation to its marketing of opioid products. Tuesday’s 312-page filing draws from previously unseen emails in which Richard Sackler, then-president of Purdue Pharma, encouraged obfuscation in response to concern about the addictive powers of prescription opioids, reported The Times. “[W]e have to hammer on abusers in every way possible,” Sackler wrote in a 2001 email quoted in the filing. “They are the culprits and the problem. They are reckless criminals.” Purdue Pharma has said Healey’s suit “distorts critical facts” and “is littered with biased and inaccurate characterizations of [internal] documents and individual defendants,” according to Seeking Alpha. More than 40,000 people died of opioid-related drug overdoses in 2016, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Nearly half of those deaths involved legally obtained prescription medications, according to the National Institute for Health Care Management. More than 60,000 Americans died of drug overdoses in 2016. Meanwhile, the Sacklers raked in money, largely thanks to OxyContin. The drug was Purdue Pharma’s biggest revenue stream with $35 billion in sales between 1995 and 2015. The Sacklers were the 19th-richest family in the U.S. in 2016, with an estimated $13 billion net worth, according to Forbes. Through various foundations, the family has donated millions to medical research, art institutions and hospitals, but as of 2017 there was no evidence they were helping opioid addicts, according to an investigation by The Daily Caller News Foundation. Now the question is being raised: will institutions continue to take Sackler money? Purdue Pharma insists the Sackler family is not part of the company’s everyday operations. The family escaped legal consequences even as Purdue Pharma executives pleaded guilty in 2007 to charges that the company had misrepresented the risks of OxyContin, reported The Times. The company and three top executives paid a historically large $634.5 million in fines. At least eight members of the Sackler family served on Purdue Pharma’s board after the 2007 fine as of 2017. The Times reports Tuesday’s filing has “the first evidence that appears to tie the Sacklers to specific decisions made by the company about the marketing of OxyContin.” The filing claims: Richard Sackler stepped down as president in 2003, and other family members were out of company operations around the time of the 2007 lawsuit, but the Sacklers still had major influence over Purdue Pharma, the filing claims. As recently as 2012, a Purdue Pharma sales official complained about “micromanagement” from Richard Sackler in an email. Some of Richard Sackler’s quotes in the filing deal directly with OxyContin overdose deaths. The court filing contends: Purdue Pharma has been accused of helping create the opioid crisis through its aggressive marketing of its products. The opioid crisis is taking a substantial toll not only on drug abusers but on their families, including newborn babies who are born addicted to opiates and grandparents who use their retirement savings to raise their grandchildren. TheDCNF began investigating the Sackler family’s charitable donations in fall 2017 in the series “American Cartel.” The first part of the series can be read here. • United States Takes Action To Confront Illegal Immigration

By R. Mitchell - Today the United States Government announced historic action to confront the illegal immigration crisis facing the United States. The Trump administration notified the Government of Mexico that the United States is invoking Section 235(b)(2)(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act immediately. Individuals arriving in the United States from Mexico—illegally or without proper documentation—will be returned to Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. The Mexican government has assured Trump officials that it will afford affected migrants visas to stay on Mexican soil, apply for work, and other benefits while they await U.S. proceedings. The move will effectively end catch-and-release where illegal immigrants that request asylum after being caught entering the country illegally, would be released into the United States pending legal proceedings. The caught and released aliens rarely showed up for their hearings and disappeared into the shadows of the illegal alien community within the United States. Source: U.S. Department of State
