John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • US Government Fears For Maria Butina’s Safety, Prosecutors Accidentally Reveal

By Chuck Ross - Federal prosecutors accidentally disclosed on Friday that they fear for the safety of Maria Butina, the alleged Russian agent who is cooperating with the U.S. government. Prosecutors disclosed their concerns in a court filing that was intended to be filed under seal, out of public view. The document appeared briefly on the federal court system’s documents database and was spotted by reporters. “Although the fact of defendant Butina’s cooperation is now public, the details of her transportation to and from the jail are not,” prosecutors told District Judge Tanya Chutkan. “Once disclosed, such information could be used by individuals or entities who might seek to harm or intimidate the defendant to prevent her from continuing to cooperate with law enforcement.” The filing does not specify what threats Butina may face. But the 30-year-old Butina pleaded guilty in federal court on Thursday to conspiracy involving Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank. She entered a cooperation agreement with prosecutors. Beginning in March 2015, Butina and a person believed to be her boyfriend, a GOP operative named Paul Erickson, “agreed and conspired” with Torshin and another unnamed person “to act in the United States under the direction of Russian Official without prior notification to the Attorney General.” Butina admitted that she “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over U.S. politics.” She and Torshin established links to the National Rifle Association, meeting on several occasions with officials from the gun rights group. Butina established her own pro-gun group, The Right to Bear Arms, which sought to establish gun rights in Russia. Erickson is reportedly a target in the federal investigation, which is being conducted separately from the special counsel’s probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. According to Friday’s filing, prosecutors plan to transport Butina to and from the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C. and jail in Alexandria, Va. Prosecutors also said that Butina may be transported to a grand jury. • Does A Photo Show Trump Jr. With Alleged Russian Spy Maria Butina?

By Emily Larsen - The Occupy Democrats Facebook page shared a photo Tuesday that it said showed alleged Russian spy Maria Butina with President Donald Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr. “Whatever you do, DON’T share this embarrassing newly-obtained photo of Donald Trump Jr. with Russian spy Maria Butina,” the meme said. Verdict: True Butina took a photo with Trump Jr. at a National Rifle Association (NRA) dinner in 2016. Fact Check: Butina pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to influence U.S. politics as a foreign agent. She admitted in a plea agreement that she “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over U.S. politics.” Prosecutors dropped a second charge against Butina of acting as an unregistered foreign agent. She previously pleaded not guilty to both charges after being indicted in July. The meme in the Occupy Democrats post said that the photo of Butina and Trump Jr. was “newly-obtained,” but The New York Times published the photo in an August story about Butina’s connections to influential Republicans and conservatives. Occupy Democrats previously posted the meme in August on the same day the story was published. “She even managed to get a photo with Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, whom she met at a 2016 dinner hosted by the N.R.A. in Louisville, Ky,” the Times story read. It identified the third person in the photo as NRA board member Pete Brownell, who later served as the NRA’s president from 2017 to 2018. Butina met Trump Jr. at the event with Aleksandr Torshin, then-deputy governor of Russia’s central bank. One of Trump Jr.’s lawyers told McClatchy DC that the conversation with Torshin was brief. “It was all gun-related small talk,” he said. The NYT piece included photos of Butina with other high-profile Republicans like former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. She has also been pictured with Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. Butina, who ran a Russian gun rights group called the Right to Bear Arms, reportedly worked with Torshin and Republican operative Paul Erickson, Butina’s boyfriend. The three established connections with NRA executives and conservative political groups. Butina moved to the U.S. on a student visa in 2016 and attended American University in Washington, D.C., though she had previously visited the U.S. and attended political events. She asked Trump a question about U.S.-Russian relations at FreedomFest in 2015. “I believe I would get along very nicely with Putin,” Trump told the audience in response to Butina’s question. “And I mean where we have the strength. I don’t think you’d need the sanctions.” Erickson sent an email to a Trump campaign official in May 2016 with the subject line “Kremlin connection” in which he said that Russia was “quietly but actively seeking a dialogue with the U.S.” and suggested using an NRA convention to make “first contact.” Erickson told The Daily Caller News Foundation in December 2017 that Torshin and Butina did not ask him to send the email. The Daily Beast reported Dec. 5 that federal investigators are considering bringing charges against Erickson. Butina faces a maximum of five years in prison followed by deportation. • Alleged Russian Agent Maria Butina Is Changing Her ‘Not Guilty’ Plea

By Chuck Ross - Maria Butina, a 29-year-old Russian gun rights activist, is preparing to change her “not guilty” plea to charges that she worked as a foreign agent of the Kremlin in the U.S., her lawyers informed a federal judge on Monday. Butina’s attorney asked the judge presiding over the case for a change of plea hearing on Tuesday or Wednesday. “The parties have resolved this matter,” the filing states. Butina, a former graduate student at American University, has signaled for weeks that she was negotiating with prosecutors on conspiracy charges and charges that she acted as an unregistered foreign agent of Russia. Butina was indicted on July 17 and accused of working under the direction of Alexander Torshin, the deputy chief of Russia’s central bank, to infiltrate American political groups, including the National Rifle Association. A pro-gun group that Butina founded called The Right to Bear Arms allowed her access to the NRA and other conservative organizations. She also struck up a romantic relationship with Paul Erickson, a longtime GOP operative who is also reportedly on prosecutors’ radar. Butina’s attorneys have argued that she was not operating as a Kremlin agent. Instead, she was attempting to network with Americans to improve relations between the U.S. and Russia. Butina appears to have tried to make inroads to the presidential campaign of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker. She exchanged messages with Torshin in 2015 providing updates about Walker’s campaign. Erickson also attempted to gain access to the Trump campaign for Butina and Torshin. He sent an email in May 2016 to Trump campaign official Rick Dearborn entitled “Kremlin Connection” seeking a meeting between Trump and Torshin, who he described as Vladimir Putin’s emissary. The pair never met, though Torshin did cross paths with Donald Trump Jr. later that month on the sidelines of the NRA convention in Louisville.
