John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Thousands Of French Police Prepare As Yellow Vest Activists Storm Paris

By Chris White - More than 100,000 French police are preparing for New Year’s Eve in Paris as the government tries to prevent the yellow vest movement from hijacking what is considered a major tourist event. Demonstrations are being organized on Facebook where nearly 9,000 people have indicated they plan to attend and cause a ruckus. The movement was created in November through a grassroots uprising after French President Emmanuel Macron leveled excessive carbon taxes on the middle class. Authorities are gearing up for the worst. “What can we expect? Disorder,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters as he visited a fire station in Paris. “What I see with the ‘yellow vests’ is a desire to be harmful, not to demonstrate.” Macron, who dinged the carbon tax on Dec. 5, is expected to give a televised New Year’s address as protesters are being called on to occupy outside Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris. The demonstrations capped a difficult year for the French president, who’s seen his approval ratings tank. Macron’s getting heat from environmentalists who were angry after he backslid on the taxes following the months-long protests. Greenpeace and three other organization, for instance, initiated a lawsuit Dec. 18 claiming France is not doing enough to tackle climate change. The organizations are giving the government two months to formulate a response, after which they will move forward with their lawsuit. The legal pursuit puts Macron in a bind. The complaint comes less than a month after Macron dinged an unpopular gas tax that roiled activists associated with the so-called yellow vest movement. The anti-gas tax protest is a mix of left-wing and right-wing populist elements. One of the organizations leading the legal pursuit believes the protesters want a carbon tax. • DOJ Wants To Keep Justification For Raiding Reported Clinton Foundation Whistleblower Secret

By Richard Pollock - The Department of Justice is requesting that the justification of an FBI raid on a reportedly recognized whistleblower’s home remain secret, according to a letter from U.S. Attorney Robert Robert Hur. The letter was sent to the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland on Dec. 7 in response to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s Nov. 30 request to unseal court documents that would show the FBI’s rationale for the raid. The documents could potentially reveal whether the bureau and the magistrate who signed the court order allowing the raid, Stephanie A. Gallagher, knew that the subject was, according to his lawyer, a recognized whistleblower. Sixteen FBI agents raided Dennis Cain’s Union Bridge, Maryland, home on Nov. 19 for six hours, even though Cain told them that he was a recognized whistleblower and handed classified documents over to the agents. The documents Cain possessed reportedly showed that federal officials failed to investigate potential criminal activity regarding former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the Clinton Foundation, and the Russian company that purchased Uranium One. Cain gave the documents to Justice Department Inspector General Michael Horowitz, who had a senior official from his office hand-deliver them to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, according to Cain’s layer, Michael Socarras. Cain, a former employee of an FBI contractor, has not been arrested in connection with the raid. Whistleblower advocates and defense attorneys have condemned the raid, and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley demanded that FBI Director Christopher Wray justify the raid and divulge whether the bureau knew about Cain’s reported disclosure. The Iowa Republican gave Wray until Dec. 12 to respond. Hur did not address Cain’s reported status as a protected whistleblower in his letter to the court and instead appeared to employ boilerplate objections to keep the documents out of the public. He also did not invoke national security concerns or claim that Cain possessed classified information. Releasing the raid’s justification would “seriously jeopardize the integrity of the ongoing investigation,” Hur wrote in his eight-page letter. “Making this type of information public while this investigation is ongoing could harm the government’s ability to find additional relevant evidence.” He also stated that his office opposed the court order’s public release “to guard against possible tampering of witnesses and destruction of evidence, and to maintain the ability of the grand jury to investigate this matter.” Hur wrote that “unsealing would expose details of the government’s investigation and impact the government’s ability to secure charges in this matter.” His letter also indicated that there were other “targets or subjects of the investigation.” The U.S. Attorney claimed that redacting the search warrant application “is not practicable” because the warrant is “interwoven with sensitive investigative information.” Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. • Winter Storm Leaves Hundreds Of Thousands Without Power In The South

By Tim Pearce - Hundreds of thousands are without power as a winter storm continues to pummel parts of the South with heavy snow, ABC News reports. The storm dropped roughly 2 feet of snow on parts of Virginia and 10 to 20 inches of powder on parts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia. Parts of Georgia and Kentucky received half a foot of snow or more. More than 276,000 people are currently without power because of the weekend storm. More than 141,000 of the customers left in the dark are in North Carolina, ABC News reports. Those numbers have improved since Sunday, when well over half a million people were without power. The massive storm has created havoc on roads and highways throughout the South. People attempting to travel on the icy roads have gotten into accidents more often and the storm has hindered emergency vehicles and first responders. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper warned residents Sunday to keep from traveling if possible as National Guard workers, road crews and emergency personnel clear roads of traffic, according to the Associated Press. “Stay put if you can,” Cooper said. “Wrap a few presents, decorate the tree, watch some football.” At least one person died because of the storm that placed more than 20 million people under a winter weather alert and about 8 million people under flash flood warnings. Nine million people fell under high wind advisories, CNN reported. More than 1,100 flights in and out of North Carolina’s Charlotte Douglas International Airport were canceled Sunday. The storm is moving east off the coast and into the Atlantic Ocean. Some snow is continuing to fall on the states of Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, according to ABC News.
