John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Trump Administration Urges Supreme Court To Protect Cross-Shaped War Memorial

By Kevin Daley - The Trump administration filed an amicus (or “friend-of-the-court”) brief Wednesday urging the Supreme Court to protect a 93-year-old war memorial in Bladensburg, Maryland that is shaped like a Latin cross. The Court will soon decide whether the cross-shaped World War I memorial violates the First Amendment’s ban on religious favoritism. The justices agreed to take the case on Nov. 3. [Read the Trump administration’s brief to the Supreme Court] The Trump administration’s brief emphasizes the need for the high court to clarify its jurisprudence concerning religious displays in the public square. Since 2005 the justices applied two different tests for assessing the constitutionality of sectarian symbols in public settings. Confusion has followed in lower federal courts as to which test should govern the so-called public display cases. That uncertainty, the government says, “encourages challenges to longstanding displays like the Memorial Cross, which in turn fosters the very religion-based divisiveness that the establishment clause seeks to avoid.” “Cases like these cannot help but divide those with sincerely held beliefs on both sides,” the brief reads. “This case presents an opportunity for the Court to adopt a standard for establishment clause challenges to passive displays that will reduce factious litigation, provide clarity to lower courts, and promote consistency across cases.” The administration then offers a solution to that problem: it urges the justices to resolve public display cases with reference to the practices of the founding fathers. The brief favorably cites the high court’s approach to a 2014 case called Town of Greece v. Galloway. In that case, a five-justice majority said the town board of Greece, New York did not violate the Constitution by opening monthly public meetings with a prayer. The case arose when several Maryland residents represented by the American Humanist Association (AHA) filed a lawsuit seeking the memorial’s renovation or removal in 2014. A three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found for the AHA in October 2017, concluding that the memorial was an unconstitutional government endorsement of Christianity. “While the Latin cross may generally serve as a symbol of death and memorialization, it only holds value as a symbol of death and resurrection because of its affiliation with the crucifixion of Jesus Christ,” the decision reads. The full 4th Circuit denied review on an eight to six vote, prompting several dissents, including one which warned that the panel decision imperils similar monuments in Arlington National Cemetery. The American Legion erected the memorial, known locally as “Peace Cross,” to honor the World War I dead of Prince George’s County in 1925. A state commission has administered the site since 1961. Oral arguments are scheduled at the Supreme Court for Feb. 27, 2019 and a decision is expected in June. • United States Takes Action To Confront Illegal Immigration

By R. Mitchell - Today the United States Government announced historic action to confront the illegal immigration crisis facing the United States. The Trump administration notified the Government of Mexico that the United States is invoking Section 235(b)(2)(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act immediately. Individuals arriving in the United States from Mexico—illegally or without proper documentation—will be returned to Mexico for the duration of their immigration proceedings. The Mexican government has assured Trump officials that it will afford affected migrants visas to stay on Mexican soil, apply for work, and other benefits while they await U.S. proceedings. The move will effectively end catch-and-release where illegal immigrants that request asylum after being caught entering the country illegally, would be released into the United States pending legal proceedings. The caught and released aliens rarely showed up for their hearings and disappeared into the shadows of the illegal alien community within the United States. Source: U.S. Department of State

    • Pelosi Promises Swift Action On ‘Commonsense’ Gun Control

By Grace Carr - Democrats will act quickly to bring “commonsense” gun control reforms to the table, Democratic House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi promised in a statement. “The new Democratic majority will act boldly and decisively to pass commonsense, life-saving background checks that are overwhelmingly supported by the American people,” Pelosi said, Politico reported Monday. With Pelosi’s support, Democrats have coalesced to create a gun reform proposal that will require federal background checks on all gun sales, including private sales, Politico reported. The measure is spearheaded by Democratic California Rep. Mike Thompson, a Pelosi ally who says a bill for universal background checks will be introduced to Congress in early 2019, according to Politico. “The American people want this. They’re way ahead of the Congress, they’re way ahead of the White House,” Thompson said, according to Politico. “I think you will see it happen in the first 100 days [of 2019].” Democratic New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also promised to act “very quickly” to push the measure onto the House floor. “We told the American voters that we do mean to do this, and we do mean to do it,” he told Politico. The bill will have bipartisan support according to Thompson, who refused to name GOP members who will sign onto the bill, according to Politico. New York Republican Rep. Peter King, however, has indicated he will support the bill, Politico reported. Roughly 60 percent of Americans want stricter gun laws, according to an October Gallup poll. The U.S saw a number of mass shootings in 2018. Mass shootings killed scores of people at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, California; Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida; Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh; and Santa Fe High School in Texas. Mass shootings in 2017, including the massacres at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas and Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, also afflicted hundreds of victims and their families. GOP North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson calls universal background checks “a red herring,” noting “there’s not a single commercial gun transaction in America that doesn’t have a background check,” according to Politico. The National Rifle Association staunchly opposes universal background checks, maintaining the restriction deprives individuals of due process and doesn’t stop criminals from acquiring firearms. Gun control groups largely support the proposal. “The public has been demanding commonsense gun laws for years,” Everytown for Gun Safety president John Feinblatt said, Politico reported. “The public is ready for the Congress to act,” he added. Everytown “is a movement of Americans working together to end gun violence and build safer communities,” according to its Twitter handle. Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy maintains that Republicans will be forced to accept gun control if they want to make up the losses they suffered at the midterms. “Republicans can’t win the House back if their position on guns doesn’t change,” Murphy said, Politico reported. The measure is unlikely to pass the Republican controlled Senate.
