John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • ISIS Kills US Troops In Syria

By Hanna Bogorowski - American troops are among those killed in a Wednesday suicide bombing in northern Syria, according to a spokesperson for Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. “U.S. service members were killed during an explosion while conducting a routine patrol in Syria today. We are still gathering information and will share additional details at a later time,” the coalition tweeted. A U.S. military official confirmed to CBS News that at least two Americans are among the 15 dead, but the U.S. military has not confirmed reports of the number. The explosion occurred in the northern city of Manbij at a restaurant where residents claim American troops sometimes visit. The Islamic State extremist group has since claimed responsibility for the attack, and one expert suggested ISIS has identified the suicide attacker as Abu Yasin al-Shami. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters that President Donald Trump has been fully briefed and “will continue to monitor the ongoing situation in Syria.” The explosion comes weeks after Trump ordered the withdrawal of American troops from the region and on the same day Vice President Mike Pence told the Global Chiefs of Mission conference at the State Department that “the caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated.” Manbij is just south of Turkey, in an area held by U.S.-allied Kurdish forces. Trump spoke with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan Tuesday, in which they reportedly discussed a safe zone for Turkey to set up inside Syria along the border This is an ongoing story, and more information on the number of those dead and the identities of the American troops will be added. • Americans Support Trump’s Calls To Bring Troops Home From Afghanistan And Syria: Poll

By Grace Carr - A majority of Americans support President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops fighting in Syria and Afghanistan, according to a Tuesday Politico poll. Twenty-five percent of Americans strongly support the decision to bring home troops from Afghanistan and Syria, and 31 percent somewhat support the decision, according to the poll. Only 11 percent strongly oppose the decision to bring home U.S. troops, and 16 percent somewhat oppose the decision. Just under 20 percent aren’t sure what Trump should do. The president has sought to bring home troops from Syria since April. Trump announced in December that he would bring home 2,000 troops in Syria and roughly 7,000 of the 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan, according to The Atlantic. “After many years they are coming home,” Trump tweeted on Dec. 23. The poll results are based on responses from 1,989 registered voters who were surveyed between Jan. 4 and 6. Politico’s poll also reveals that 47 percent of Americans blame Trump for the government shut down, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress. Forty-six percent of Americans also have a “totally unfavorable” view of Democrats in Congress, according to the poll. A majority of Americans believe passing an immigration reform bill is an important priority, but the country is split on whether to erect a border wall, the poll reveals. Thirty percent of the country strongly supports a border wall along the border of Mexico, while 37 percent strongly oppose the wall, according to Politico. Trump addressed the nation Tuesday night, speaking on the importance of immigration reform and revealing his plan to build a steel barrier along the southern border. He also addressed concerns regarding the safety of migrant children and humanitarian aid. The president will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border to “meet with those on the front lines of the national security and humanitarian crisis,” according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. Tuesday night’s address was Trump’s first prime-time Oval Office address. Only 37 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the right direction, according to the poll. Sixty-three percent say it’s headed in the wrong direction. • USO: Delivering Christmas to Deployed Troops

By Marine Corps Sgt. David Staten - The Chairman’s 2018 USO Holiday Tour is bringing live acts ranging from athletes and actors to musicians and comedians to troops deployed overseas for the holidays. Marine Corps Gen. Joe Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is on his fifth USO holiday tour since becoming chairman. The tour’s first stop: Norway, where performers will bring a little bit of home to the airmen, soldiers, Marines and sailors deployed there in support of NATO and U.S. European Command. “While we can’t bring our troops home for the holidays, we can bring a bit of home to them – that’s what the USO holiday tour is all about,” Dunford said. The USO holiday tour was started in 2003 by then-chairman Air Force Gen. Richard B. Myers to express appreciation to deployed service members during the holidays. This year’s tour includes Olympian Shaun White; NCIS star Wilmer Valderrama; singer and television host Kellie Pickler; comedian Jessimae Peluso; This Is Us star Milo Ventimiglia; three-time CrossFit champion Mat Fraser; and DJ J. Dayz. About 190,000 service members will be away from home this holiday season, ashore in places such as South Korea, Iraq, Germany and Japan, and aboard ships in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. Overseas troops have been provided with traditional American Christmas dinners since World War II, no matter where they are stationed or deployed. In addition to the USO tour visiting select worldwide locations, the troops will be well-fed: Pounds of turkey: 112,092  Pounds of beef: 59,430 Pounds of ham: 38,430 Pounds of shrimp: 29,304 Cases of cookies: 690 Assorted cakes and pies: 16,002 Pounds of marshmallows: 6,564 Gallons of juice: 3,743 Gallons of eggnog: 2,145 This year, agency officials said they plan to send even more food.
