John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Americans Support Trump’s Calls To Bring Troops Home From Afghanistan And Syria: Poll

By Grace Carr - A majority of Americans support President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops fighting in Syria and Afghanistan, according to a Tuesday Politico poll. Twenty-five percent of Americans strongly support the decision to bring home troops from Afghanistan and Syria, and 31 percent somewhat support the decision, according to the poll. Only 11 percent strongly oppose the decision to bring home U.S. troops, and 16 percent somewhat oppose the decision. Just under 20 percent aren’t sure what Trump should do. The president has sought to bring home troops from Syria since April. Trump announced in December that he would bring home 2,000 troops in Syria and roughly 7,000 of the 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan, according to The Atlantic. “After many years they are coming home,” Trump tweeted on Dec. 23. The poll results are based on responses from 1,989 registered voters who were surveyed between Jan. 4 and 6. Politico’s poll also reveals that 47 percent of Americans blame Trump for the government shut down, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress. Forty-six percent of Americans also have a “totally unfavorable” view of Democrats in Congress, according to the poll. A majority of Americans believe passing an immigration reform bill is an important priority, but the country is split on whether to erect a border wall, the poll reveals. Thirty percent of the country strongly supports a border wall along the border of Mexico, while 37 percent strongly oppose the wall, according to Politico. Trump addressed the nation Tuesday night, speaking on the importance of immigration reform and revealing his plan to build a steel barrier along the southern border. He also addressed concerns regarding the safety of migrant children and humanitarian aid. The president will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border to “meet with those on the front lines of the national security and humanitarian crisis,” according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. Tuesday night’s address was Trump’s first prime-time Oval Office address. Only 37 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the right direction, according to the poll. Sixty-three percent say it’s headed in the wrong direction. • Trump Foundation To Dissolve As Lawsuit From New York Attorney General Continues

By Evie Fordham - The Donald J. Trump Foundation signed a stipulation agreeing to dissolve Tuesday, but a lawsuit by the New York state Attorney General’s office against the charity continues. President Trump had offered to dissolve the foundation in 2016, but the New York Attorney General at the time, Eric Schneiderman, blocked the dissolution so his office could investigate, reported The Washington Post. The Trump Foundation will divide up its remaining assets among other charities under judicial supervision, with approval resting with new state Attorney General Barbara Underwood, she announced in a press release Tuesday. “Our petition detailed a shocking pattern of illegality involving the Trump Foundation – including unlawful coordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and willful self-dealing, and much more,” Underwood said in a statement Tuesday. “This amounted to the Trump Foundation functioning as little more than a checkbook to serve Mr. Trump’s business and political interests.” Trump has denied that the foundation did anything wrong, reported WaPo. The lawsuit from Underwood’s office is still going on in Manhattan Supreme Court, reported CNN. It seeks $2.8 million in restitution plus penalties and “a bar on President Trump and his three eldest children from serving on the boards of other New York charities,” according to the press release. Underwood announced the suit in June and alleged that Trump “used the Trump Foundation’s charitable assets to pay off his legal obligations, to promote Trump hotels and other businesses, and to purchase personal items” in a press release that month. Underwood discussed her decision to sue the Trump Foundation with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour June 14. “This is politics at its very worst,” a Trump Foundation spokesperson told The Daily Caller News Foundation in June. “The Foundation has donated over $19 million to worthy charitable causes – more than it even received … The Foundation currently has $1.7 million remaining which the [New York Attorney General] has been holding hostage for political gain.” The foundation has never had more than a few million dollars in the bank, peaking at $3.2 million in 2009, according to WaPo. WaPo has alleged that Trump used the foundation’s funds to pay legal settlements for his private business, to make an illegal political donation and even to purchase art for a club he owns. Underwood assumed office in May 2018 after Schneiderman stepped down following allegations of physical abuse from four women. • Government Watchdog Demands Probe Into New York Attorney General’s Climate Crusade Debacle

By Chris White - A prominent government watchdog group is demanding New York officials probe the state attorney general for using former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s legal group to target energy companies. New York-based Government Justice Center (GJC) filed an ethics complaint Friday against New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood for using two special assistant attorneys paid for by Bloomberg Philanthropies. GJC wants the state Joint Commission on Public Ethics (JCOPE) to investigate the Democrat. “New York public officials are ethically obligated to follow the law and conduct state business without giving the impression of being improperly influenced by others,” Cameron Macdonald, executive director of the GJC, wrote in a press statement attached to the complaint. The ploy was first implemented under Underwood’s predecessor, former New York Attorney General (AG) Eric Schneiderman. “And the extraordinary powers of New York’s Attorney General, especially under New York’s unique Martin Act, are being rented to a third-party special interest,” he added. Underwood’s office was provided two assistant AGs – Matthew Eisenson and Gavin McCabe – to help the state defend against potential environmental regulation rollbacks. The complaint comes shortly after The Daily Caller News Foundation reported in October that McCabe signed an amicus brief in June supporting New York City’s yearlong climate lawsuit against Exxon and Chevron. He’s one of at least eight attorneys hired by attorneys general across the country to work on environmental litigation. The city’s lawsuit is the third such claim brought against oil companies Exxon, Chevron, BP, Royal Dutch Shell and Conoco Phillips. Another judge in Northern California struck down identical lawsuits in June brought by the cities of San Francisco and Oakland. The legal maneuvers are a boon for trial lawyers as well. Some critics believe Bloomberg Philanthropies is being used as a type of pass-through entity through which donors can support elected officials with resources that legislatures will not provide and which donors cannot legally provide directly. Oregon AG Ellen Rosenblum also raised alarms in June after her office hired environmental lawyer Steve Novick as a special assistant attorney general (SAAG). Rosenblum is a longtime Democrat and politician who has served as the state’s top law enforcer since 2012. “Are we sure it is correct to refer to him as a ‘volunteer.’ And not an employee,” Rosenblum asked her deputy AG in a June 17 email. “Can you be an unpaid employee of the State? As a SAAG doesn’t that make one an employee?” Her email was included in a June report from the Competitive Enterprise Institute detailing the extent of Bloomberg’s campaign. • Iran Expands Military Tentacles, State Department Advisor Says

By David Vergun - Brian Hook, special representative for Iran and senior policy advisor to the secretary of state, provided evidence of Iran’s violation of U.N. resolutions against weapons proliferation during a news conference at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C. Iran has the largest ballistic force in the region, Hook said, with 10 ballistic missile systems in its inventory or under development. Missile development and testing has increased in recent years, he added. Last year, Iran launched a medium-range missile believed to be the Khorramshahr, he said. It can carry a payload of more than a half ton and could be used to carry nuclear warheads. Its suspected range is 1,200 miles, which puts Europe in range. The U.S. is unveiling new evidence of Iran’s ongoing missile proliferation throughout the region, he said, standing in a hangar near a variety of seized Iranian weapons in a display he said is much larger than it was a year ago. Those weapons are being exported to proxy rebels in a number of countries including Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Bahrain and Yemen, he said. In response, the U.S. is ramping up diplomatic efforts and is strengthening economic sanctions against Iran, he said. The U.S. military also is working to build capacity and capability with militaries in the region.
