John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • 13-Year-Old Jayme Closs Found Alive 87 Days After Being Abducted From Her Wisconsin Home

By Evie Fordham - A 13-year-old girl who was missing for 87 days was found alive in Gordon, Wisconsin, after escaping from her alleged abductor, authorities announced at a press conference Friday. Jayme Closs was allegedly kidnapped and held in a home in a “remote” area by 21-year-old Jake Thomas Patterson, according to CNN. Patterson may also be responsible for the murders of Closs’s parents, James and Denise Closs. They were found shot to death in their home on Oct. 15, the night their daughter disappeared, reported NBC News. “Jayme was taken against her will and escaped from the residence at which she was being held in. We also don’t believe at this time the suspect had any contact with the family. We do believe that Jayme was the only target,” Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said according to CNN. Patterson has been arrested and charged with murder and kidnapping. “For 88 days I have said we would work tirelessly to bring Jayme Closs home. We have done just that,” he continued. “Jayme is safe.” Jayme Closs escaped from the home where she was being held and approached a woman walking her dog for help Thursday night, according to CNN. Jayme Closs turned up in Gordon, which is roughly 70 miles north of the girl’s home. The woman walking her dog got in touch with the authorities about Jayme Closs and made her comfortable with the help of a neighbor, Kristin Kasinskas. “[Jayme Closs] said to us that this person killed my parents and took me. She did say that,” Kasinskas told CNN. “She said that this person usually hides her or hides her when others are near or when he has to leave the household. She did not go into detail about how she got out of the house or anything like that.” There are more unanswered questions. Authorities do not know why Patterson allegedly targeted the Closs family and do not believe he had a prior connection with Jayme Closs or her parents, reported CNN. There’s also the question of the 911 call on the night that James and Denise Closs were murdered in their home in Barron, Wisconsin. Police do not know or have not revealed who made the early morning 911 call from Denise Closs’s cellphone on Oct. 15. The “unusual” call had no communication from the caller, just yelling and a cry for help in the background, police said according to NBC News. Police arrived four minutes after the call was placed to find the home’s front door kicked in. No weapons were found at the scene of James and Denise Closs’s murder, reported NBC News. Jayme Closs’s case has a more fortunate ending than another incident that ended in a young woman’s alleged murder in Iowa on July 18. Mollie Tibbetts, 20, was allegedly killed by Cristhian Bahena Rivera while she was jogging near the small town of Brooklyn, Iowa. Bahena Rivera is believed to be a Mexican national residing in the U.S. illegally and has pleaded not guilty to Tibbetts’s murder. Tibbetts’s family has asked the media and national figures not to politicize her death. • US Navy To End Bread And Water Policy For Misbehaving Sailors, Ending Longstanding Tradition

By Evie Fordham - A longstanding tradition allowed by the U.S. Navy will come to an end Jan. 1, 2019, when captains are no longer able to punish misbehaving sailors by confining them to bread and water only. “Rations furnished a person undergoing such confinement shall consist solely of bread and water. The rations will be served three times daily at the normal time of meals, and the amount of bread and water shall not be restricted,” the military’s Uniform Code of Military Justice reads, according to Task & Purpose. “Prisoners serving this punishment will be confined in a cell and will be bound by the procedures set forth for disciplinary segregation cells. They will not be removed for work or physical exercise.” Navy captains have the power and avenues to mete out punishment to their sailors because they would often be away from land for months, needing to keep order without the options available to the more land-tied military branches. But a handful of secretaries of the navy have tried to get the punishment abolished as far back as 1882, according to The Times. “It sounds medieval, and that is sort of the point,” retired Capt. Kevin Eyer told The New York Times. “Sometimes you just need to scare a kid. We want them to succeed, but you need to give them a kick in the pants.” Eyer joined the Navy in 1982 and regularly sentenced sailors to the punishment, which is often jokingly called “cake and wine,” for minor misconduct. The end of the bread-and-water policy had been in the works since the Obama administration. The change comes as part of the Military Justice Act of 2016 and an amendment by the Trump administration in March 2018, reported Task & Purpose. An independent Department of Defense review group recommended the change, reported The Times.”Once drafted, the Navy did not oppose the legislation,” a Navy spokeswoman told The Times when asked if the Navy supported the shift. Captains can still punish low-ranking sailors in many ways, including by imposing up to 45 days of extra duty, restricting them to the ship for up to 60 days or putting them on half-pay for two months. Some captains choose punishment methods other than “cake and wine” out of principle, but others are known for their liberal use of the policy. For example, the USS Shiloh was nicknamed the USS Bread and Water and had terrible morale. Its commanding officer, Capt. Adam Aycock, use the punishment at least six times in roughly two years, according to Task & Purpose. • John McCain Associate Gave Steele Dossier To BuzzFeed

By Chuck Ross - A longtime associate of late Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain provided a copy of the infamous Steele dossier to BuzzFeed News, according to an explosive court filing released Wednesday. David Kramer, a former State Department official who was an executive at the McCain Institute, provided BuzzFeed News reporter Ken Bensinger with a copy of the dossier Dec. 29, 2016, according to a filing submitted Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Ursula Ungaro. BuzzFeed published the dossier, which was authored by former British spy Christopher Steele, on Jan. 10, 2017. The disclosure was made as part of a final report ahead of Ungaro’s ruling in favor of BuzzFeed in a defamation lawsuit. The revelation that Kramer was BuzzFeed’s source settles one of the main mysteries of the dossier, which alleges a vast conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russian government to influence the 2016 election. Kramer obtained copies of the dossier after meeting in late November 2016 with Steele. He and McCain became aware of Steele’s investigation of then-candidate Donald Trump earlier that month at the Halifax International Security Forum. McCain dispatched Kramer to London to meet with Steele. After that encounter, Kramer obtained a copy of the dossier from Glenn Simpson, the founder of Fusion GPS, the firm that hired Steele on behalf of the Clinton campaign and DNC. Kramer met Nov. 30, 2016, with McCain and McCain’s chief of staff, Christopher Brose, to review Steele’s reports. “Kramer advised McCain to share the reports with the FBI and the CIA,” according to Ungaro. Days later, Kramer met at McCain’s behest with Victoria Nuland, who served then as assistant secretary of state for Europe and Eurasian affairs and the State Department, and Celeste Wallender, the top Russian affairs official at the National Security Council. Nuland and Wallender were aware of the dossier and Steele, according to Ungaro. “Kramer reviewed with Bensinger what he knew about the Dossier and explained that he took the allegations seriously,” according to the court filing.
