John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Americans Support Trump’s Calls To Bring Troops Home From Afghanistan And Syria: Poll

By Grace Carr - A majority of Americans support President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. troops fighting in Syria and Afghanistan, according to a Tuesday Politico poll. Twenty-five percent of Americans strongly support the decision to bring home troops from Afghanistan and Syria, and 31 percent somewhat support the decision, according to the poll. Only 11 percent strongly oppose the decision to bring home U.S. troops, and 16 percent somewhat oppose the decision. Just under 20 percent aren’t sure what Trump should do. The president has sought to bring home troops from Syria since April. Trump announced in December that he would bring home 2,000 troops in Syria and roughly 7,000 of the 14,000 American soldiers in Afghanistan, according to The Atlantic. “After many years they are coming home,” Trump tweeted on Dec. 23. The poll results are based on responses from 1,989 registered voters who were surveyed between Jan. 4 and 6. Politico’s poll also reveals that 47 percent of Americans blame Trump for the government shut down, while 33 percent blame Democrats in Congress. Forty-six percent of Americans also have a “totally unfavorable” view of Democrats in Congress, according to the poll. A majority of Americans believe passing an immigration reform bill is an important priority, but the country is split on whether to erect a border wall, the poll reveals. Thirty percent of the country strongly supports a border wall along the border of Mexico, while 37 percent strongly oppose the wall, according to Politico. Trump addressed the nation Tuesday night, speaking on the importance of immigration reform and revealing his plan to build a steel barrier along the southern border. He also addressed concerns regarding the safety of migrant children and humanitarian aid. The president will travel to the U.S.-Mexico border to “meet with those on the front lines of the national security and humanitarian crisis,” according to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders. Tuesday night’s address was Trump’s first prime-time Oval Office address. Only 37 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the right direction, according to the poll. Sixty-three percent say it’s headed in the wrong direction. • David Hogg Avoids CNN’s Simple Question About Gun Control

By Nick Givas - Parkland school shooting survivor David Hogg ignored a simple question about gun control and background checks on CNN’s “New Day” Tuesday and refused to answer directly. Host Alisyn Camerota asked Hogg if universal background checks would have prevented the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and he failed to come up with a clear answer. “I think there’s many instances and instances of gun violence that could have stopped further acts of gun violence. There’s 40,000 people that die of gun violence every year and a very small minority of them end up being in school shootings,” he replied. “When we’re talking about hardening our schools and different things, what we’re not talking about is how we’re going to make our communities safer. When we’re talking about school safety we’re neglecting the thousands of students that die either coming to school or coming back from school every day or simply just outside their house.” “Our congressmen and our elected officials have said that they don’t care about them or their violence because of the zip code they live in or the number of figures in their bank account,” Hogg continued. “And if we really want to start talking about a national emergency like the president likes to talk about, 40,000 Americans dying annually from gun violence is a pretty damn good one to start out with.” Hogg then claimed the Parkland shooting could have been prevented but didn’t provide details on what could have stopped it. He also blamed the NRA for the violence and accused them of trying to “benefit” from mass shootings. “It is an issue that is non-partisan. At least, I would hope so, considering the fact that both Democrats and Republicans die from gun violence. Bullets don’t discriminate and neither should our legislators. No legislator should look at these laws and say to themselves, oh I can’t vote on that because I’ve taken campaign contributions from the NRA. That’s what they’re thinking,” he said. “The American people need to wake up and realize again and again, the reason these laws are not getting passed — the reason why — for example, disarming people like the shooter at our high school could have happened through an extreme risk protection but didn’t is because that law was actively advocated against by the National Rifle Association. That uses due process to disarm people like terrorists and domestic abusers, but they actively try to stop because it stops these things from happening in the first place, which they benefit from. [sic] Because after every single mass shooting, gun sales go up significantly and the NRA benefits from that.” Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. • Senate Democrats Have A Strategy To End The Shutdown

By Molly Prince - A growing number of Senate Democrats are refusing to vote in favor of any legislation until an appropriations bill is passed to end the government shutdown. The Republican-led House passed a stopgap funding bill on Dec. 20 that included $5.7 billion to construct a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, however, with a 51-seat majority, Senate Republicans fell short of the necessary 60 votes needed to send it to President Donald Trump’s desk for signature. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to kill the legislation on arrival in the Senate, and consequently, a government shutdown has been in effect since funding expired Dec. 21. After Democrats took the control of the House, the chamber passed a stopgap spending bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security without any wall appropriations, as well as a second consolidated spending bill to fund the remaining agencies. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected the Democrats’ House-passed bill calling the lack of border security funding a “non-starter.” In an attempt to re-open the government, Schumer and his Democratic caucus are quietly planning to block legislation that McConnell brings to the floor, according to The Washington Post. The first piece of legislation to be protested is a bill to authorize security assistance to Israel. “Senate Democrats should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government until Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allow a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government,” tweeted Maryland Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen. “Mitch, don’t delay. Let’s vote!” “The House has already passed bipartisan bills to end the #TrumpShutdown. I agree with [Van Hollen],” Massachusetts Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren responded. “The Senate’s first and only order of business right now should be passing that same legislation.” Other Democrat senators who have advocated for the strategy include Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California and Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Even if the Democrat-sponsored bill is passed in the Senate, Trump has pledged to veto any measures that exclude funding for a border wall. • Michael Flynn Judge Seeks Review Of Key FBI Notes Before Sentencing Decision |

By Chuck Ross - The judge presiding over the Michael Flynn case is ordering a review of key FBI documents before deciding on a sentence for the former national security adviser. Judge Emmet Sullivan wants to review a memo put together on Jan. 24, 2017 by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. He also wants to look at FBI notes from that interview. Flynn’s lawyers revealed Tuesday that McCabe wrote he urged Flynn to meet with FBI agents without an attorney because it would be the “quickest” way to complete the meeting.  The federal judge who will issue a sentence against Michael Flynn next week wants to review FBI documents related to a fateful White House interview that the retired lieutenant general gave to two FBI agents just days into his tenure as President Donald Trump’s national security adviser. District Court Judge Emmet G. Sullivan on Wednesday ordered Flynn’s lawyers to hand over two documents: a memo that then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe wrote after speaking with Flynn ahead his Jan. 24, 2017 interview with two FBI agents and the FBI summary of notes taken during that same interview. That summary, known as an FD-302, was compiled on Aug. 22, 2017 by the two FBI agents who interviewed Flynn. It is unclear why the summary was put together seven months after the Flynn interview. Flynn pleaded guilty on Dec. 1, 2017 to lying to the FBI agents regarding his conversations during the presidential transition period with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Sullivan also ordered the special counsel to hand over any other memos or interview notes relevant to Flynn’s interview. The judge set a Friday deadline to turn over the documents. He will decide on Flynn’s sentence next Monday. Sullivan’s interest in the documents appears to have been spurred by claims that Flynn’s lawyers made in a court filing submitted Tuesday night. Pointing to the McCabe memo, they noted that McCabe nudged Flynn toward meeting with the two FBI agents without an attorney present. He wrote that he told Flynn that a two-on-one meeting would be the “quickest” option. Flynn agreed and said he did not need to involve White House lawyers. McCabe also wrote in the memo that he and other FBI officials decided before the meeting that Flynn would not be warned ahead of the interview about the penalties of lying to the agents. McCabe noted that “they wanted Flynn to be relaxed” and “were concerned that giving the warnings might adversely affect the rapport.” Flynn’s lawyers said in Tuesday’s filing that he accepts responsibility for lying to the agents, though it is clear from the document that Flynn takes issue with how his FBI interview came about. The attorneys noted Flynn continued cooperating with the special counsel “even when circumstances later came to light that prompted extensive public debate about the investigation of General Flynn.” That appeared to be a reference to the ethical and legal problems now facing McCabe and Peter Strzok, one of the two agents who interviewed Flynn. Both McCabe and Strzok have been fired from the FBI — McCabe for making false statements of his own about authorizing contacts with the media and Strzok for exchanging anti-Trump text messages with his mistress, former FBI lawyer Lisa Page. It is unlikely that Sullivan’s review of the FBI documents will change his sentencing decision. Both the special counsel and Flynn’s legal team recommended that Flynn serve no jail time because of his extensive cooperation. But there is a chance that the documents could be filed in public view. That prospect could be a long shot, however, as Sullivan said that he would allow Flynn’s team and the special counsel to file the documents under seal if they wanted.
