John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

For years I thought of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:7) as a blueprint for human behavior, a standard no one could possibly meet. How could I have missed the true meaning ? Jesus spoke these words not to frustrate us, but to tell us what God is like.

Why should we love our enemies? Because our merciful Gather causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good. Why store up treasures in heaven? Because the Father lives there and will lavishly reward us. Why live without fear and worry? Because the same God who clothes the lilies and the grass of the field has promised to take care of us. Why pray? If an earthly father gives his son bread or fish, how much more will the Father in Heaven give good gifts to those who ask?

Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:7) not only to explain God's ideal toward which we should never stop striving but also to show that in this life none of us will ever reach that ideal.

Before God, we all stand on level ground : murderers and tantrum-throwers, adulterers and lusters, thieves and coveters. We are all desperate, and that is the only state appropriate to a human being who wants to know God. Have fallen from the absolute ideal, we have nowhere to land but in the safety net of absolute grace.

-Philip Yancey

I think we need to love our enemies and all that, is because at the end of the day, we are all human. It's not for us to judge the actions of others, that's what they meant when it's just live and let live. We are all humans, just trying to get to the end of the day with a full belly, sleep at night with a roof over your head, and then to do it all over again in the morning. It's not for us to judge, it's God's will at the end, and whether we have done our duties, lived a life worth living, and when the time comes that we have to move on to the next life, I'd like to believe that all your actions in this world will be weighed, and the people who have done wrong, the people who have abused their power, the people who manipulated others, would be judged accordingly. But for now, we live, survive at the end of the day, and do it all over again the next day.

    • JFK’s Reassuring Message To A Little Girl About Santa’s Safety During The Cold War

By Hanna Bogorowski - Former president John F. Kennedy once reassured a young girl that Santa Claus was going to be just fine after she overheard her parents talking about Russia testing nuclear bombs at the North Pole. Eight-year-old Michelle Rochon penned a letter to Kennedy in 1961 during the height of the Cold War pleading with him to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole. “Dear Mr. Kennedy,” she wrote. “Please stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole because they will kill Santa Claus. I am 8 years old. I am in the third grade at Holy Cross School.” Rochon explained her distress to CBC decades later, saying she knew nuclear bombs were bad. What was Santa going to do if they were being aimed at the North Pole? Rochon received a phone call a week after she mailed Kennedy her letter from a local radio station asking to interview her. The White House had just issued a picture of the president reading her letter and assuring her of Santa’s safety. “Dear Michelle,” Kennedy’s letter read. “I was glad to get your letter about trying to stop the Russians from bombing the North Pole and risking the life of Santa Claus.” “I share your concern about the atmospheric testing of the Soviet Union, not only for the North Pole but for countries throughout the world; not only for Santa Claus but for people throughout the world,” the president continued. “However, you must not worry about Santa Claus. I talked with him yesterday and he  is fine. He will be making his rounds again this Christmas.” Rochon recalled to CBC being overjoyed that the president had spoken with Santa and that he’d still be delivering his toys all around the world. Current President Donald Trump took a different approach regarding Santa and young children Monday when he asked a 7 year-old if he still believes in Santa. “Hello, is this Coleman? Merry Christmas. How are you? How old are you … Are you doing well in school? Are you still a believer in Santa? ‘Cause at 7, it’s marginal right?” Trump asked during his call on the NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) Santa tracking hotline. First lady Melania Trump noted on Twitter following the event that answering children’s calls about Santa on Christmas Eve is becoming one of her favorite White House traditions. • US Government Fears For Maria Butina’s Safety, Prosecutors Accidentally Reveal

By Chuck Ross - Federal prosecutors accidentally disclosed on Friday that they fear for the safety of Maria Butina, the alleged Russian agent who is cooperating with the U.S. government. Prosecutors disclosed their concerns in a court filing that was intended to be filed under seal, out of public view. The document appeared briefly on the federal court system’s documents database and was spotted by reporters. “Although the fact of defendant Butina’s cooperation is now public, the details of her transportation to and from the jail are not,” prosecutors told District Judge Tanya Chutkan. “Once disclosed, such information could be used by individuals or entities who might seek to harm or intimidate the defendant to prevent her from continuing to cooperate with law enforcement.” The filing does not specify what threats Butina may face. But the 30-year-old Butina pleaded guilty in federal court on Thursday to conspiracy involving Alexander Torshin, the deputy governor of Russia’s central bank. She entered a cooperation agreement with prosecutors. Beginning in March 2015, Butina and a person believed to be her boyfriend, a GOP operative named Paul Erickson, “agreed and conspired” with Torshin and another unnamed person “to act in the United States under the direction of Russian Official without prior notification to the Attorney General.” Butina admitted that she “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over U.S. politics.” She and Torshin established links to the National Rifle Association, meeting on several occasions with officials from the gun rights group. Butina established her own pro-gun group, The Right to Bear Arms, which sought to establish gun rights in Russia. Erickson is reportedly a target in the federal investigation, which is being conducted separately from the special counsel’s probe of possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. According to Friday’s filing, prosecutors plan to transport Butina to and from the U.S. attorney’s office in Washington, D.C. and jail in Alexandria, Va. Prosecutors also said that Butina may be transported to a grand jury.
