John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Power, Money, and the Good Society.

Recommended Posts

It has been said that all of political philosophy is about 'Who gets what? And says who?' So, I am interested in the forum's views concerning the good society. Is a good society about each contributing what they can, and some authority distributing that amongst everyone according to what they need, as Karl Marx thought, or is a good society fundamentally about an individual's freedom to realise the dream of his/her ambitions, irrespective of the needs of others? Is there a necessary conflict between these ideas, or can they be reconciled, and if so, how?

Best wishes, 2RM.

Every society in some way has some form of ideal Utopia. "Is there a necessary conflict between these ideas, or can they be reconciled, and if so, how?" I believe God thinks so, and is why a Cherubim was placed between paradise and man with a flaming sword. I think, you know the answer to how these things may be reconciled? After all, you're amongst Christians!

God bless,

William

    • DuckDuckGo Taps Apple Maps to Power Private Search Results

We're excited to announce that map and address-related searches on DuckDuckGo for mobile and desktop are now powered by Apple's MapKit JS framework, giving you a valuable combination of mapping and privacy. As one of the first global companies using Apple MapKit JS, we can now offer users improved address searches, additional visual features, enhanced satellite imagery, and continually updated maps already in use on billions of Apple devices worldwide. With this updated integration, Apple Maps are now available both embedded within our private search results for relevant queries, as well as available from the "Maps" tab on any search result page. Let's see it in action… With the example query pizza in Cupertino, the map appears as a module within the search results. Clicking on the map image opens an expanded map. Clicking an item on the sidebar highlights that location, for you to zoom into. Try it out with one of the many different ways you can search for places on DuckDuckGo: Search for an address Search for a geographical place Search for a local business Search for a type of business Search for places nearby At DuckDuckGo, we believe getting the privacy you deserve online should be as simple as closing the blinds. Naturally, our strict privacy policy of not collecting or sharing any personal information extends to this integration. We do not send any personally identifiable information such as IP address to Apple or other third parties. For local searches, where your approximate location information is sent by your browser to us, we discard it immediately after use. You are still anonymous when you perform map and address-related searches on DuckDuckGo. You can read more about our anonymous localized results here. We’re excited to work closely with Apple to set a new standard of trust online, and we hope you'll enjoy this update. We also welcome your feedback, which can be sent via the "Send feedback" button at the bottom of search results. For more privacy advice, follow us on Twitter & get our privacy crash course. • Union: Give Us Money Or Employees Who Are Veterans Will Kill Themselves

By Luke Rosiak - Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie is furious after a federal union president said that if politicians don’t end the partial government shutdown, federal employees who are veterans will kill themselves. Edward M. Canales, a local union president with the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), told ABC News that he’s received calls from veterans who aren’t able to support their families during the shutdown and who express “no positive outlook on the future.” Though there is no indication in the story that the employees were suicidal, ABC said Canales referred employees unhappy with the government shutdown to the Department of Veterans Affairs suicide hotline. “If this shutdown does not stop, we are going to have fatalities. We’re going to have suicides,” Canales, a retired prisons employee and veteran, told ABC. He called the shutdown “shameful” and said it is “slapping every veteran in the face who has served their country.” Veterans who receive care and services from the VA are unaffected by the partial government shutdown; all VA employees are also being paid on time as normal. The VA is fully funded for fiscal year 2019 and all VA operations continue unimpeded, the department said. On Monday, Wilkie fired back at AFGE in a letter to national president J. David Cox, saying AFGE was exploiting “the real tragedy of Veteran suicide to make political arguments about the partial Government shutdown.” He went on to dismantle the stereotype of fragile veterans: In 2016, Cox called the House chairman tasked with overseeing the VA a “fool” and said he would “whoop” the VA secretary’s “ass.” The AFGE represents employees of federal agencies including the VA. The VA employs 300,000 people and its union is particularly strong, fighting to block the firing of employees whose misconduct has harmed veterans, and securing policies that, for example, in some case give current federal employees preference over veterans for job openings. When the Department of Defense and the VA merged two of their hospital as an experiment, they found a massive cultural clash between the VA’s unionized, civilian workforce and the DOD’s enlisted hospital employees. The Navy refused to let VA employees treat military men in the ICU, and the VA and DOD co-directors of the hospital were not on speaking terms. The proposal was supposed to save money by reducing redundancies, but the VA union ensured that no VA employees were laid off even though they weren’t needed, defeating the purpose. • Details Emerging On Money Behind Influential Environmentalist Group

By Jason Hopkins - A recent profile piece has identified several progressive institutions that are funding the Sunrise Movement, a nascent environmentalist organization that is quickly wielding influence in Washington, D.C. Founded in April 2017, the Sunrise Movement is a newcomer among the many green organizations that have already been established for generations. However, the youth-led climate group has quickly garnered national attention and high-dollar donations from across the country. Between its 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(4) entities, the group was able to raise just shy of $1 million during 2018 — and members intend to raise $2.5 million in 2019. Despite growing attention from the media, it’s been difficult to pinpoint exactly who is funding the Sunrise Movement. The group is not legally required to disclose their donors. However, a recent report from Inside Philanthropy, an outlet focused on philanthropic groups and their big donors, shed some light. The Rockefeller Fund, the Wallace Global Fund and the Winslow Foundation are core funders of Sunrise Movement. The three groups have continued to finance a large portion of Sunrise’s operations, with institutional funders making up 55 percent of the group’s 2018 budget. Thirty-five percent of its budget came from individual donors, and the rest came from non-profit partners. Sunrise’s core funders have a long history of bankrolling left-wing activities. The Global Wallace Fund has given nearly $7 million to population control groups since the 1990s. The Rockefeller Family Fund has led a war against ExxonMobil, acknowledging that it has colluded with Democratic attorneys general and funded negative media coverage against the oil company. “What’s been nice about [the past month] is that our impact is incredibly clear and everybody is seeing it, because of the way we’ve been able to put truly ambitious and truly equitable climate action on the map in a way that nobody expected,” William Lawrence, co-founder and development director for Sunrise, stated. “That’s opened some doors that might have been closed before, because people are seeing the value of movement building.” Sunrise, which has been an ardent supporter of the Green New Deal, protested outside Nancy Pelosi’s office late last year, demanding the Speaker-in-waiting take more action on climate change. Their efforts received widespread attention when Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — now a New York Democratic congresswoman — joined them in protest. The group enjoyed a surge in donations after the protest. At least some of the salaries for Sunrise Movement staffers, according to Inside Philanthropies, are not based on conventional compensation agreements, but on what members claim they need to support themselves. • House Dems Plan On Going After Trump Jr In First Use Of Subpoena Power

By Henry Rodgers - House Democrats plan on going after Donald Trump Jr. with their first use of subpoena power since taking over as the majority party on Jan. 3. Democratic California Rep. Jackie Speier, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said “Donald Trump Jr.” would be the first person called in before the committee in 2019, saying she believes there were multiple people who have already testified that were not being truthful, in a Tuesday night speech to the Women’s National Democratic Club in Washington. “There are a number of persons that testified before the committee that I feel were not telling the truth,” Speier said, according to The Washington Examiner. (Photo by Jeff Vinnick/Getty Images) Trump Jr. was falsely accused of lying in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee by NPR in late November, regarding a deal with Trump Tower in Moscow. The news organization later issued a long editor’s note to the article. However, the piece was never retracted. The president’s eldest son has denied any wrongdoing since the beginning of the probe, saying in a September interview that he is not worried about legal trouble in the special counsel’s Russia probe. “I know what I did, and I’m not worried about any of that. That doesn’t mean they won’t try to create something, I mean, we’ve seen that happen with everything. But, again, I’m not,” Trump Jr. said in the interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Speier’s office did not immediately respond for comment when asked why Trump Jr. would be the first person subpoenaed by the committee.
