John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

TSA Official Threatens To Classify Workers As AWOL As Shutdown ‘Sickout’ Looms

A Transportation Security Administration higher-up threatened to classify missing workers as absent without leave Monday as many TSA screeners consider calling in sick later in January if the government shutdown lasts long enough to affect their pay.

Martin Elam, the deputy federal security director overseeing five airports in California, wrote the following in an email to TSA personnel at Palm Springs International Airport according to CNN:

Due to excessive unscheduled absences recently experienced at PSP (Palm Springs International airport) that has adversely impacted security operations, if you have an unscheduled absence, you will NOT be placed in an intermittent furlough status.

Your unauthorized unscheduled absence will be coded by payroll as absent without leave (AWOL). At the conclusion of the government shutdown, an employee’s AWOL status may result in progressive disciplinary action.

Workers calling in sick have had “a minimal impact on operations,” TSA spokesman Michael Bilello told The Wall Street Journal.

But air travelers could see growing airport security lines if Congress and the White House are unable to come to an agreement that reopens the government as President Donald Trump continues to demand funding for a southern border wall.

There are conflicting reports about whether enough TSA workers have started calling in sick to significantly slow down security lines. Over 5 percent of TSA employees at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport called in sick Friday compared to the typical 3.5 percent, reported TheWSJ.

Big airports, including Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, reported relatively normal wait times, according to TheWSJ. But some travelers took to social media to complain about long wait times Sunday, reported Forbes.

“This TSA line at SeaTac is out of this world. I’ve NEVER been in a line this long before,” one Twitter user wrote Sunday.

More than 99 percent of Sunday’s 2.2 million air travelers made it through security in less than 30 minutes, according to TSA. LaGuardia Airport was the outlier with an average wait of 52 minutes, but TSA blamed that on a “mismanagement of resources” rather than a sickout, reported CBS News.

The main concern is how a sickout could affect passengers’ safety.

“The agency is well prepared to handle these different contingencies without letting it impact the actual security,” said Kip Hawley, a former TSA administrator, according to TheWSJ.

The shutdown is also contributing to staffers in air traffic control towers calling out of work, reported Forbes.

The federal government employs more than 2 million people full-time excluding U.S. Postal Service employees, according to Governing.com. Roughly 80 percent of them work outside the Washington, D.C., region. More than 420,000 federal employees would be expected to work without pay, according to a press release from Vice Chairman Patrick Leahy’s Senate Appropriations Committee staff.

Congress has a practice of issuing backpay for the federal employees who keep working during the shutdown. The partial government shutdown that started Dec. 22 is one of the longest in U.S. history and could set a record if it lasts longer than 21 days.

Meanwhile, Trump might try to pursue his border wall via a national emergency declaration.

    • Democrats Attack Trump’s Plan To Bring Back Thousands Of Federal Workers

By Tim Pearce - House Democrats are questioning the legality of a Department of the Interior (DOI) decision to call back thousands of furloughed employees to work on offshore drilling permits. A trio of Democrats sent a letter to the acting Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt Wednesday, alleging that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) broke federal law by allowing some federal employees to begin working again. “This is an outrageous step, and the justifications provided in the BOEM contingency plan … are farcical and make it clear that the administration cares only about the impacts on its favorite industry and not about workers, their families, and ordinary families,” the letter said. Democratic Reps. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, Betty McCollum of Minnesota, and Alan Lowenthal of California joined Grijalva in signing the letter. Grijalva chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources, which oversees the DOI. BOEM changed its shutdown plan Jan. 8 to bring back employees to work on seismic permits and offshore lease sales because leaving the agency understaffed threatened to “negatively impact the Treasury and negatively impact investment in the U.S. Offshore Gulf of Mexico,” BOEM said according to the letter. The Democrats demanded BOEM reverse course. If not, Bernhardt would likely be called in front of the House Natural Resources Committee, to defend the legality of BOEM’s actions, which “appear to be in violation of the Antideficiency Act,” according to the letter. Thousands of other federal workers were called back to work Tuesday as agencies expand their definitions of “essential” personnel. “We are recalling inspectors and engineers to perform duties to ensure continuous operational safety of the entire national airspace,” a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson told Politico. “We proactively conduct risk assessment, and we have determined that after three weeks it is appropriate to recall inspectors and engineers.” Aviation, food, drug and medical inspectors were some of the 50,000 federal employees called off of furlough and back to their positions. If the government shutdown stretches to Jan. 28, about 46,000 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees return to their jobs for tax-filing season. • New Book Refutes Official Story About Thai Cave Rescue. The Truth Is More Disturbing

By Chris White - The story behind the effort to rescue children stuck in Thai cave in 2018 is more disturbing than the tale government officials told the parents of the kids, according to a new book discussing the mission. Members of the Wild Boars soccer team were not trained to dive and swim in a buddy system out of the cave, ABC Australia Southeast Asia reporter Liam Cochrane claims in his new book, “The Cave.” Instead, they were drugged, handcuffed, and carried out of the winding tunnel. “To calm nerves, the parents were told the boys were being taught how to dive and the media reported that each of them would be tethered to an air hose and then swim out with one rescue diver in front and another behind,” Cochrane writes in his book. “This was untrue.” Media shared images demonstrating how the 12 boys dressed in wetsuits and flippers would swim through the labyrinth tethered to expert divers. But the divers responsible for rescuing the children knew that such a plan would not work given the level of expertise required for the trip. “Those who’d been inside the flooded tunnels knew there was no way a child who had never dived before could make it through the muddy and treacherous obstacle course,” Cochrane writes. “The only hope was to sedate them, put oxygen-fed masks with silicone seals over their faces and let the expert cave divers carry them out.” One boy Cochrane called Note was one of the first members of the soccer team to be extracted. He was given a sedative, then injected in each leg with ketamine, an anesthesia, by Australian cave diver, Dr. Richard Harris, until the 14-year-old boy fell into unconsciousness. Note was then put into a diving suit, had an air tank strapped to his chest, and a small full-face mask fitted. He began breathing normally within a half a minute, after which the divers handcuffed the boy to prevent him from ripping at his mask. The boys were later treated for dehydration, malnutrition, oxygen deprivation and other conditions. Doctors at the hospital in Chiang Rai, where the boys were treated, monitored the kids for symptoms of diseases caused by animals and fungi in the cave. The cave rescue itself became a source of controversy after tech entrepreneur Elon Musk called British diver Vernon Unsworth, who assisted in the rescue, a pedophile. Musk was upset after the veteran diver called a submarine Silicon Valley billionaire’s team developed a “PR stunt.” Musk tweeted on July 6 that he was sending engineers from his companies SpaceX and The Boring Co. to assist in the rescue in any way that they could. The Tesla CEO later apologized. Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. • DOJ Official Bruce Ohr Acknowledged His Dossier-Related Contacts Looked Suspicious

By Chuck Ross - Justice Department official Bruce Ohr admitted to Congress last August that his contacts with the author of the Steele dossier and the FBI could be seen as “troubling” to outside observers The DOJ lawyer served as a back channel between the FBI and Christopher Steele, the author of the dossier  Republican lawmakers have questioned Ohr’s role in the dossier saga Justice Department official Bruce Ohr acknowledged in congressional testimony last year that his interactions with dossier author Christopher Steele and the FBI could appear suspicious to outside observers. “You just called the names of two people, neither of whom I think are with the Bureau, one who was mentioned unfavorably in an [Inspector General] report, both of whom had, at least from my standpoint, an unprecedented amount of animus or bias towards one of the candidates, and you are getting information from someone hired by the DNC and funneling it to the lead agent on the Russia investigation,” one lawmaker said to Ohr during his Aug. 28, 2018 interview, referring to former FBI agents Lisa Page and Peter Strzok. “Can you possibly see how that might be troubling to people?” “Yes,” Ohr replied, according to portions of a transcript published by The Epoch Times on Monday. Ohr’s admission would seem to support Republican interest in the DOJ lawyer’s dossier-related interactions. GOP lawmakers have focused on Ohr’s meetings with Steele as well as his wife’s work for Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that hired Steele and was paid by Democrats to investigate Donald Trump. Ohr also acknowledged that his wife’s work for Fusion could be interpreted as “bias,” according to a transcript of the interview. In the interview, Ohr was grilled about his meetings with Steele and his role as a back channel between the dossier author and FBI. He was also asked about his interactions in 2016 with FBI officials Andrew McCabe, Strzok, and Page, all of whom have either resigned or been fired from the FBI under clouds of suspicion. Strzok, who led the FBI’s investigation of possible Trump-Russia collusion, was fired in August 2018    because of anti-Trump text messages he exchanged with Page. Ohr met or spoke with Steele, a former MI6 officer, around 60 times from July 30, 2016 through November 2017. After at least 12 of those interactions, he briefed an FBI agent on his conversations. Republicans have focused on Ohr’s role in the matter, partly because Ohr’s wife, Nellie, also happened to be working for Fusion GPS, the firm that hired Steele. The Ohrs met with Steele in Washington, D.C. on July 30, 2016 to discuss Steele’s investigation into Trump. Days after the meeting, Ohr briefed McCabe and Page at FBI headquarters. He also met with FBI officials, including Strzok, who served as deputy chief of counterintelligence who oversaw the Russia probe. Ohr also met on Aug. 22, 2016 and Dec. 10, 2016 with Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson. Simpson provided Ohr with information about possible links between the Trump campaign and Russia. Ohr also testified that he believed that Simpson provided him a copy of the Steele dossier during the December meeting. Republicans have questioned why Steele and Simpson would use Ohr to pass information related to the Trump investigation. By the time he first met with Ohr, Steele had already been in contact with a Rome-based FBI official named Michael Gaeta. The FBI used Ohr as a back channel to Steele after the bureau cut ties with the former spy just before thee 2016 election. The bureau cut off contact with Steele on Nov. 1, 2016 after learning that he had provided information to journalists. Ohr testified that Strzok and Page introduced him to FBI agent Joseph Pientka on Nov. 21, 2016. Pientka would serve as Ohr’s main FBI contact. He passed information from Ohr to Strzok. Ohr testified that though he informed McCabe and others at the FBI about his wife’s work for Fusion, he did not inform his boss, then-Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, about his side gig.
