John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Judiciary Committee Democrat Floats Perjury Probe Of Justice Brett Kavanaugh

By Kevin Daley - Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse of Colorado, a freshman member of the House Judiciary Committee, told constituents that the panel will likely investigate Justice Brett Kavanaugh for perjury. “There’s no question [Kavanaugh] committed perjury during the confirmation hearings and so forth,” Neguse said when asked if the justice might be impeached. “I think the Judiciary Committee is likely to take that up.” A conservative opposition research group obtained and disseminated video of Neguse’s comments. The congressman was not specific as to which of Kavanaugh’s statements might rise to the level of perjury. Democrats have put forward various theories as to how Kavanaugh misled the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings: one theory, which NBC News advanced, held that he lied concerning when he first learned about the allegations of Deborah Ramirez, a Yale classmate who accused Kavanaugh of drunkenly exposing himself to her at a party. In response to questions from lawmakers during his second confirmation hearing, Kavanaugh said he first learned of Ramirez’s claims from the New Yorker, the venue in which her story appeared. NBC subsequently recovered text messages revealing that the justice and his allies were discussing Ramirez’s allegations before the story’s publication, prompting charges of perjury. However, Kavanaugh told Senate investigators before the hearing that he learned Ramirez was searching for witnesses to corroborate her story well in advance the New Yorker story’s publication, thereby belying the perjury charges. The NBC report was stealth edited, and a correction was never issued. Other theories suppose that the justice lied about the contents of his high school yearbook or hid his complicity with a White House staffer who stole strategy memos from Senate Democrats during his service in the George W. Bush administration. Neither of those propositions has been substantiated. Requests for comment from the congressman’s office went unanswered. Kavanaugh has kept a low profile since joining the high court in October 2018. Though the justices often teach in law schools or speak to various professional groups when the Court is not hearing cases, Kavanaugh’s schedule of public engagements appears rather thin. Similarly, his maneuvers on the Court reflect a sense of caution: he joined Chief Justice John Roberts and the liberal bloc to keep the Court out of controversies relating to abortion and the census, while his style at oral argument is deferential and inconspicuous. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, the new chair of the Judiciary Committee, was overheard discussing a prospective Kavanaugh impeachment at some length on board the Acela train to Washington, D.C. just days after the midterm elections. • Top Democrat On New Climate Change Panel Lays Out Her First Priority. It’s Not Ocasio-Cortez’s ‘Green New Deal’

By Michael Bastasch - The House Democrat tapped to chair the new climate change panel previewed her first big legislative pushes, and it’s not the “Green New Deal” being pushed by the progressive wing of her party. The Select Committee on the Climate Crisis will push for legislation on fuel economy standards “right off the bat,” the chairwoman, Florida Rep. Kathy Castor, said in an interview published Thursday. “Right off the bat, we will tackle fuel economy standards, make sure the Commerce Committee and the (Transportation and Infrastructure Committee) are focused on that,” Castor told USA Today. “The Financial Services Committee has to do a flood insurance reform bill. We will be involved in that as well,” Castor said. Castor’s likely goal is to shepherd legislation to undo the Trump administration’s rolling back of Obama-era fuel economy standards that were meant to cut carbon dioxide emissions. Flood insurance reform is a goal of Democrats worried about damaging sea level rise. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the creation of a special House climate committee in December. The committee doesn’t have the authority to introduce legislation or issue subpoenas, much to the chagrin of “Green New Deal” supporters. More than 40 House Democrats back the “Green New Deal” championed by New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, which calls for a climate committee to draft sweeping climate legislation. That committee would be responsible for drafting legislation to move the U.S. to 100 percent renewable energy over a 10-year period and put in place a slew of social welfare programs, including universal health care and job guarantees. Ocasio-Cortez proposed financing her climate agenda by raising top marginal tax rates as high as 70 percent, but even substantially higher income taxes wouldn’t likely yield the trillions of dollars needed to finance a Green New Deal. Environmentalists, Democratic influencers and 2020 presidential hopefuls, including Vermont Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders and New Jersey Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, support the Green New Deal proposal. However, not all Democrats support the Green New Deal, including New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. Pallone and other committee chairs worry a Green New Deal panel would only delay getting climate legislation to the floor. Pallone also questioned whether or not the ultimate goal of the Green New Deal — a 100 percent renewable-powered economy — is even feasible. “This is something that we should take a look at, but some of it may not be technologically or politically feasible,” Pallone said in a radio interview Tuesday. “I don’t want to just lay a groundwork for something that might happen in five or ten years and just talk about it. I want to actually get things done,” Pallone said. “So we kind of have to convince them to take some action on climate even though they may deny it.” Follow Michael on Facebook and Twitter

    • Swing State Governor Aims To Repeal Voter ID Requirement

By Luke Rosiak - Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Monday announced proposed legislation to repeal the state’s requirement that voters show photo ID. “Participation makes our democracy strong—we should encourage every eligible voter to exercise this fundamental right, rather than creating unnecessary barriers that make getting to the ballot box difficult,” Northam, a Democrat, said in a statement. Delegate Kaye Kory, a sponsor of the measure, said in a statement “The photo ID requirement prevents the most vulnerable Virginians from voting and silences the voices of those who most need to be heard.” The proposal would also allow people to vote absentee without providing a reason why they could not make it to the polls. Democrat Terry McAuliffe beat Republican Ken Cuccinelli for the Virginia governorship in 2013 by only 56,000 votes. In 2014, Democrat Mark Warner squeaked by against Republican Ed Gillespie in a Senate race decided by less than a percentage point, or 18,000 votes. The attorney general’s race came down to a mere 165 votes. Then, just before the 2016 election, McAuliffe restored the right to vote for 60,000 felons using an unorthodox procedure. McAuliffe had sought to allow all of Virginia’s estimated 200,000 felons to vote, but state courts said each individual felon’s circumstances must be weighed. To get around that, McAuliffe used a mechanical autopen to rapidly sign at least 60,000 letters as if he had personally reviewed them each. McAuliffe is a close friend of Bill and Hillary Clinton who managed Hillary’s 2008 bid for president. In the next race for governor in 2017, Northam beat Gillespie decisively by 9 percentage points, or 233,000 votes. In 2016 presidential election, Clinton beat Donald Trump in Virginia 49.7 percent to 44.4 percent. In the November 2018 elections, Florida voters passed a ballot measure that restored voting rights to the state’s 1.5 million felons. Florida’s political parties have historically been so evenly matched that multiple statewide races went to recounts in 2018. Florida has a large number of electoral college votes, and in 2000, the U.S. presidency infamously hung in the balance as Florida conducted a contentious recount. In California, another novel electoral procedure, called ballot harvesting, decimated the GOP in Southern California. “California just defies logic to me,” then-House Speaker Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican, said. “We were only down 26 seats the night of the election, and three weeks later, we lost basically every California contested race.” Ballot harvesting allows groups to send people knocking on doors and eliciting absentee ballots from them, which the group then collects and submits. One ballot harvester was recorded saying it’s a “new service” for “like, people who are supporting the Democratic Party.” Before its passage, a group opposed to the bill wrote that the law enabling ballot harvesting “would allow anybody to walk into an elections office and hand over truckloads of vote by mail envelopes with ballots inside, no questions asked, no verified records kept. It amounts to an open invitation to large-scale vote buying, voter coercion, ‘granny farming,’ and automated forgery.” Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. • Democrats spent their first day as majority by doing useless stuff

By R. Mitchell - Nancy Pelosi got her gavel back, Democrats became the majority party in the U.S. House of Representatives and all they did with it was pass doomed funding measures and introduce two equally worthless amendments to the U.S. Constitution. First, the House passed a budget package that would fund several government agencies through the end of fiscal year 2019 and fund Homeland Security through Feb. 8. Both measures are missing the border wall funds the president has requested. As such, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed not to put anything up for a vote that the president and Democrats have not already agreed upon. Should the package somehow get through the Senate, the White House said today that such bills would likely be vetoed by Trump. Trump and members of his administration have made clear that the only way he will approve a funding package is if it has money for the wall. Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats have decided to play politics by passing a doomed funding package all for the sake of political optics. But wait… it gets worse. Late Thursday, Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) introduced two Constitutional Amendments that have zero chance of being approved by the Senate or the states. The first proposed change to the Constitution would eliminate the Electoral College. The president and vice president would be decided by popular vote which would lean races overwhelmingly towards urban population centers (New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Miami, etc.) “In two presidential elections since 2000, including the most recent one in which Hillary Clinton won 2.8 million more votes than her opponent, the winner of the popular vote did not win the election because of the distorting effect of the outdated Electoral College,” Cohen said in a statement. “Americans expect and deserve the winner of the popular vote to win office.” The second proposed amendment would limit the power of Presidential pardons. Cohen’s change would not allow the president to pardon himself, members of his family, people in his administration or campaign staff. “Presidents should not pardon themselves, their families, their administration or campaign staff,” Cohen said. “This constitutional amendment would expressly prohibit this and any future president, from abusing the pardon power.” Under Nancy Pelosi’s first day of leadership, Democrats accomplished exactly nothing – a likely foreshadowing of the next two years.
