John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russa was “open to dialogue” with the US in a holiday message to President Donald Trump Sunday.

The Kremlin released multiple holiday greetings from Putin to world leaders and governments Sunday, reported CNN.

Putin’s full message to Trump stated:

In a congratulatory message to President of the United States of America Donald Trump on the occasion of the Christmas and New Year holidays, Vladimir Putin emphasized that Russian-American relations are an essential factor in ensuring strategic stability and international security, and confirmed that Russia is open to dialogue with the United States on the widest possible agenda.

Trump and Putin had their first and only summit in Helsinki, Finland, July 15. The two had the chance to meet in late November during the G20 summit in Argentina, but Trump canceled after Russia fired upon and seized of Ukrainian vessels Nov. 25.

Putin discussed meeting with Trump as recently as Dec. 20.

“I don’t know whether a meeting will happen,” Putin said during a press conference according to CNN. “On multiple occasions, I’ve said I am willing to meet, we have a number of issues to discuss, including our bilateral agenda.”

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying the chances of the two leaders meeting in 2019 would depend on the U.S.

“The issue should be addressed to Washington. Both our president and his representatives have said that we are ready for the talks when Washington is ready for it,” Russian news agency TASS quoted Lavrov according to Reuters.

    • Michael Cohen May Back Out Of Congressional Hearing Over Trump Comments

By Chuck Ross - Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen might back out of a congressional hearing scheduled for February, the former Trump lawyer’s adviser said Thursday. In an appearance on MSNBC, Lanny Davis said Cohen is reconsidering whether to testify before Congress because of comments from President Donald Trump about Cohen’s father-in-law. “There is genuine fear and it causes Michael Cohen to consider whether he should go forward or not. And he’s not yet made a final decision,” Davis told MSNBC’s Ari Melber. Trump took aim at Cohen’s father-in-law during an interview Saturday with Fox’s Jeanine Pirro. “[Cohen] should give information maybe on his father-in-law, because that’s the one that people want to look at,” Trump said. “Because where does that money — that’s the money in the family. And I guess he didn’t want to talk about his father-in-law — he’s trying to get his sentence reduced.” “So it’s pretty sad,” Trump continued. “It’s weak and it’s very sad to watch a thing like that.” Trump’s remarks garnered an immediate rebuke from Democrats who accused the Republican of witness intimidation and tampering. Cohen agreed earlier in January to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Feb. 7 about his years of work for Trump. Cohen was sentenced Dec. 12 to three years in prison for a slew of crimes, including tax evasion and bank fraud. He also pleaded guilty to illegal campaign contributions for payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. Cohen said Trump directed him to pay Daniels $130,000 in October 2016. Cohen also pleaded guilty in the special counsel’s investigation to lying to Congress about the extent of his negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. The former Trump fixer is expected to discuss his dealings with Trump in his congressional testimony, should it go forward. But Davis, a close friend of the Clintons, said Trump’s remarks had a negative impact on Cohen. “He is very concerned, as is his family, that a bully in the bully pulpit named Donald Trump calls out a member of his family, and he’s also called out other members of his family, using the White House platform on a national television show.” Davis also said he agreed with Democrats that Trump’s remarks constituted witness intimidation and tampering. “There’s no question that his threatening and calling out his father-in-law who, quote, has all of the money, is not only improper and unseemly for a bully using the bully pulpit of the presidency, but the very definition of intimidation and witness tampering,” Davis said. “Especially a witness about to appear before a congressional committee to tell the truth about what he knows about Donald Trump? By definition that deserves a criminal investigation.” Davis told Melber on Jan. 11 he hopes Cohen’s congressional appearance will help him get a reduced prison sentence. • Democrats Attack Trump’s Plan To Bring Back Thousands Of Federal Workers

By Tim Pearce - House Democrats are questioning the legality of a Department of the Interior (DOI) decision to call back thousands of furloughed employees to work on offshore drilling permits. A trio of Democrats sent a letter to the acting Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt Wednesday, alleging that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) broke federal law by allowing some federal employees to begin working again. “This is an outrageous step, and the justifications provided in the BOEM contingency plan … are farcical and make it clear that the administration cares only about the impacts on its favorite industry and not about workers, their families, and ordinary families,” the letter said. Democratic Reps. Raúl Grijalva of Arizona, Betty McCollum of Minnesota, and Alan Lowenthal of California joined Grijalva in signing the letter. Grijalva chairs the House Committee on Natural Resources, which oversees the DOI. BOEM changed its shutdown plan Jan. 8 to bring back employees to work on seismic permits and offshore lease sales because leaving the agency understaffed threatened to “negatively impact the Treasury and negatively impact investment in the U.S. Offshore Gulf of Mexico,” BOEM said according to the letter. The Democrats demanded BOEM reverse course. If not, Bernhardt would likely be called in front of the House Natural Resources Committee, to defend the legality of BOEM’s actions, which “appear to be in violation of the Antideficiency Act,” according to the letter. Thousands of other federal workers were called back to work Tuesday as agencies expand their definitions of “essential” personnel. “We are recalling inspectors and engineers to perform duties to ensure continuous operational safety of the entire national airspace,” a Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson told Politico. “We proactively conduct risk assessment, and we have determined that after three weeks it is appropriate to recall inspectors and engineers.” Aviation, food, drug and medical inspectors were some of the 50,000 federal employees called off of furlough and back to their positions. If the government shutdown stretches to Jan. 28, about 46,000 Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees return to their jobs for tax-filing season.
