John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Man Pulls Gun Outside Oregon School, Police Shoot Him Dead

By Neetu Chandak - Police killed a man who drew a gun while being escorted off the premises of an Oregon middle school Friday. The man was forced out of Cascade Middle School in Eugene, Oregon over a custody dispute, The Associated Press reported Friday. The school was put on lockdown for close to four hours. The shooting occurred outside of the school at 10:27 a.m., according to a Eugene Police Department Facebook post Friday. “As officers were escorting the male from the school, he produced a firearm and a struggle ensued,” the police department wrote. “During the struggle the subject was shot by police and is now deceased.” No students were hurt, The AP reported. Police led small groups of students to a nearby church to meet up with parents in the afternoon. The middle school set up a “care room” with counselors to support students throughout the day. “We will resume school at the regular time on Monday and will have the Care Room set up for any students who need that support,” the school’s website said. “We will communicate about any specific plans or changes to the typical school day on Sunday evening.” Eugene Police Department and Cascade Middle School did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. • Some Guy In California Spent Three Hours Licking A Doorbell, And Now The Police Want To Find Him

By Neetu Chandak - Police are looking for a man who licked a doorbell at a California home for three hours. The homeowners were not in town at the time of the incident, though their children were present. The bizarre event was caught on the Salinas, California home’s surveillance camera Saturday morning, according to KION. The camera also caught the man relieving himself in front of the house. The Salinas Police Department believes the suspect is 33-year-old Roberto Daniel Arroyo. “We were pleasantly surprised. The image was so clear it didn’t take us long to identify the individual,” Salinas Police Department spokesperson Miguel Cabrera said. Arroyo reportedly went to a neighbor’s house as well. Neighbors and residents expressed bewilderment over Arroyo’s behavior. “I thought I’ve seen it all, but this takes the cake,”  neighbor Alfred Santos told ABC 7. “You kind of laugh about it afterwards because, technically, he didn’t harm anybody, he didn’t break anything,” said Sylvia Dungan, the owner of the home. Arroyo could face charges for petty theft and prowling. • Thousands Of French Police Prepare As Yellow Vest Activists Storm Paris

By Chris White - More than 100,000 French police are preparing for New Year’s Eve in Paris as the government tries to prevent the yellow vest movement from hijacking what is considered a major tourist event. Demonstrations are being organized on Facebook where nearly 9,000 people have indicated they plan to attend and cause a ruckus. The movement was created in November through a grassroots uprising after French President Emmanuel Macron leveled excessive carbon taxes on the middle class. Authorities are gearing up for the worst. “What can we expect? Disorder,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters as he visited a fire station in Paris. “What I see with the ‘yellow vests’ is a desire to be harmful, not to demonstrate.” Macron, who dinged the carbon tax on Dec. 5, is expected to give a televised New Year’s address as protesters are being called on to occupy outside Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris. The demonstrations capped a difficult year for the French president, who’s seen his approval ratings tank. Macron’s getting heat from environmentalists who were angry after he backslid on the taxes following the months-long protests. Greenpeace and three other organization, for instance, initiated a lawsuit Dec. 18 claiming France is not doing enough to tackle climate change. The organizations are giving the government two months to formulate a response, after which they will move forward with their lawsuit. The legal pursuit puts Macron in a bind. The complaint comes less than a month after Macron dinged an unpopular gas tax that roiled activists associated with the so-called yellow vest movement. The anti-gas tax protest is a mix of left-wing and right-wing populist elements. One of the organizations leading the legal pursuit believes the protesters want a carbon tax.
