John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Michael Cohen Disputes Report Claiming Prague Visit

Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen on Thursday disputed a would-be bombshell report claiming that he visited Prague during the 2016 presidential campaign.

“I hear #Prague #CzechRepublic is beautiful in the summertime. I wouldn’t know as I have never been.  #Mueller knows everything!,” Cohen wrote on Twitter.

— Michael Cohen (@MichaelCohen212) December 27, 2018

Cohen was responding to a report from McClatchy claiming that Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been provided with electronic evidence showing that Cohen’s cell phone communicated with a tower in Prague during in late Summer 2016.

The report, if accurate, would seem to corroborate a major allegation made in the Steele dossier, which was funded by the Clinton campaign and DNC.

The dossier, which was authored by former British spy Christopher Steele, alleged that Cohen visited Prague in late August or early September 2016 to meet with Kremlin insiders to pay off Russian hackers.

Cohen vehemently denied the dossier’s allegations up until he began cooperating over the summer with federal prosecutors in New York and with the special counsel’s office. He also disputed an April 13 report from the same McClatchy reporters who claimed that Mueller had been provided evidence that Cohen visited Prague.

Cohen, who entered plea deals with prosecutors from both offices, was sentenced to three years in prison on Dec. 12.

Lanny Davis, an adviser to Cohen, has claimed in recent months that Cohen has information implicating President Trump in illegal activity. As part of a plea deal struck with prosecutors in New York, Cohen said that Trump instructed him to make a hush payment in October 2016 to Stormy Daniels, the porn star who claims she had an affair with Trump in 2006. Cohen pleaded guilty to making an illegal campaign contribution.

Cohen also pleaded guilty in the Mueller probe on Nov. 29 to lying to Congress last year about his efforts to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. Notably, Cohen did not admit to lying to Congress when he denied claims made in the dossier. That has been widely interpreted as circumstantial evidence that Mueller does not have evidence placing Cohen in Prague.

Cohen’s tweet is the first time since June 28 that he has weighed in publicly on the dossier’s allegations against him. Davis, has instead been the public face of those denials.

Davis, a longtime associate of the Clintons who was also Cohen’s lawyer during his legal battles, insisted on Dec. 16, as well as to McClatchy this week, that Cohen did not visit Prague. Those denials have been taken seriously given that Cohen seemingly has no incentive to lie about any contacts with Russians now that he is cooperating with prosecutors.

    • BuzzFeed’s Report Has Been Disputed By Mueller, But Adam Schiff Is Going To Investigate Anyway

By Chuck Ross - House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff said Sunday that he will “absolutely” investigate allegations made in a controversial BuzzFeed article even though the report has been directly disputed by the special counsel’s office. “Absolutely. Absolutely,” Schiff told CBS’s “Face the Nation” when asked whether he would investigate allegations laid out in a BuzzFeed article published on Thursday. “Congress has a fundamental interest in two things. First, getting to the bottom why this witness came before us and lied, and who else was knowledgeable that this was a lie,” the California Democrat added. But in a rare move, the special counsel issued an on-the-record statement disputing the key allegations made in the BuzzFeed story. “BuzzFeed’s description of specific statements to the Special Counsel’s Office, and characterization of documents and testimony obtained by this office, regarding Michael Cohen’s Congressional testimony are not accurate,” Peter Carr, a spokesman for Special Counsel Robert Mueller, said in a statement on Friday night. Schiff said that he assumed the Mueller statement was prompted by the reaction to the BuzzFeed story. “Also it may have to do with the special council wanting to use Michael Cohen as a witness in further prosecutions and wanted to make sure that the public didn’t have the perception he was saying more than he was saying, at least to the special council,” Schiff said. • Michael Cohen May Back Out Of Congressional Hearing Over Trump Comments

By Chuck Ross - Former Trump attorney Michael Cohen might back out of a congressional hearing scheduled for February, the former Trump lawyer’s adviser said Thursday. In an appearance on MSNBC, Lanny Davis said Cohen is reconsidering whether to testify before Congress because of comments from President Donald Trump about Cohen’s father-in-law. “There is genuine fear and it causes Michael Cohen to consider whether he should go forward or not. And he’s not yet made a final decision,” Davis told MSNBC’s Ari Melber. Trump took aim at Cohen’s father-in-law during an interview Saturday with Fox’s Jeanine Pirro. “[Cohen] should give information maybe on his father-in-law, because that’s the one that people want to look at,” Trump said. “Because where does that money — that’s the money in the family. And I guess he didn’t want to talk about his father-in-law — he’s trying to get his sentence reduced.” “So it’s pretty sad,” Trump continued. “It’s weak and it’s very sad to watch a thing like that.” Trump’s remarks garnered an immediate rebuke from Democrats who accused the Republican of witness intimidation and tampering. Cohen agreed earlier in January to testify before the House Oversight and Reform Committee on Feb. 7 about his years of work for Trump. Cohen was sentenced Dec. 12 to three years in prison for a slew of crimes, including tax evasion and bank fraud. He also pleaded guilty to illegal campaign contributions for payments to porn star Stormy Daniels. Cohen said Trump directed him to pay Daniels $130,000 in October 2016. Cohen also pleaded guilty in the special counsel’s investigation to lying to Congress about the extent of his negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. The former Trump fixer is expected to discuss his dealings with Trump in his congressional testimony, should it go forward. But Davis, a close friend of the Clintons, said Trump’s remarks had a negative impact on Cohen. “He is very concerned, as is his family, that a bully in the bully pulpit named Donald Trump calls out a member of his family, and he’s also called out other members of his family, using the White House platform on a national television show.” Davis also said he agreed with Democrats that Trump’s remarks constituted witness intimidation and tampering. “There’s no question that his threatening and calling out his father-in-law who, quote, has all of the money, is not only improper and unseemly for a bully using the bully pulpit of the presidency, but the very definition of intimidation and witness tampering,” Davis said. “Especially a witness about to appear before a congressional committee to tell the truth about what he knows about Donald Trump? By definition that deserves a criminal investigation.” Davis told Melber on Jan. 11 he hopes Cohen’s congressional appearance will help him get a reduced prison sentence. U.S.—The economic toll of the government shutdown is growing by the day, and experts now believe the cost of having the government partially closed down is nearly as bad as the economic toll of a functioning government interfering in our economy, businesses, and private decisions in the first place. • Report Highlights The Crazy Lengths Hackers Took To Hack US Utilities

By Chris White - Russian hackers went to shocking and elaborate lengths to wriggle their way into the United States’ electrical grid, according to a Wall Street Journal report Friday that detailed a slew of new hacking techniques. Hackers targeted government contractors connected to a public utility company in Oregon to access the country’s electric grid, the report notes. Some of the contractors were unaware that they were victimized due to the exotic tactics’ hackers used to disguise their intentions. The scheme’s success is owed mostly to how it exploited trusted business relationships using impersonation and trickery. Hackers planted malware on sites utility engineers frequently visit and sent phony résumés with tainted attachments. After getting credentials, they then slipped through portals and gained access to computer systems that monitor and control electricity flows. TheWSJ’s report identified government contractors such as Commercial Contractors, in Washington, and Carlson Testing, in Oregon, among other big-name public utilities who were targeted in 2017. One of the cites contractors visited cleaned out malicious malware from its domains in 2016 only to see hackers return and infect the system again. Hackers seized on unsuspecting visitors and other trade websites, hoping to lure engineers and penetrate the companies where they worked. The Russians could potentially take down “anybody in the industry,” researcher Yonathan Klijnsma told WSJ reporters. Mike Vitello of Oregon-based construction company, All-Ways Excavating, told reporters that he doesn’t recall reading websites or clicking on tainted email attachments. The intrusion was part of the Russian campaign, according to the security companies that studied the hack. All-Ways Excavating is a government contractor and bids for jobs with agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates government-owned hydroelectric facilities. Attackers used Vitello’s account to send mass emails to customers. One email went to another Oregon-based company called Dan Kauffman Excavating – the subject line read: “Please DocuSign Signed Agreement—Funding Project.” But the memo set off warning signals. “Just received this from your email, I assume you have been hacked.,” Office manager Corinna Sawyer said in an email to Vitello, who maintains he never visited any of the infected sites nor does he remember clicking on any dodgy links. She received an ominous and cryptic response from his account: “I did send it.” Sawyer suspected something was wrong, so she called Vitello, who told her the email was fake. Analysts believe the covert style of attack was the first of its kind. “What Russia has done is prepare the battlefield without pulling the trigger,” Robert Silvers, a former cyber policy expert at Homeland Security, told reporters. WSJ’s report comes amid government warnings in 2018 warning that the U.S. would be unprepared in the event of a power outage. The Department of Homeland Security noted in July of 2018 that Russia’s military intelligence agency had infiltrated the control rooms of power plants across the United States. There is no evidence that the hackers tried to take over the plants, as Russian actors did in Ukraine in 2015 and 2016.
