John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

U.S.—The economic toll of the government shutdown is growing by the day, and experts now believe the cost of having the government partially closed down is nearly as bad as the economic toll of a functioning government interfering in our economy, businesses, and private decisions in the first place. • ISIS Kills US Troops In Syria

By Hanna Bogorowski - American troops are among those killed in a Wednesday suicide bombing in northern Syria, according to a spokesperson for Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR), the U.S.-led coalition against ISIS. “U.S. service members were killed during an explosion while conducting a routine patrol in Syria today. We are still gathering information and will share additional details at a later time,” the coalition tweeted. A U.S. military official confirmed to CBS News that at least two Americans are among the 15 dead, but the U.S. military has not confirmed reports of the number. The explosion occurred in the northern city of Manbij at a restaurant where residents claim American troops sometimes visit. The Islamic State extremist group has since claimed responsibility for the attack, and one expert suggested ISIS has identified the suicide attacker as Abu Yasin al-Shami. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told reporters that President Donald Trump has been fully briefed and “will continue to monitor the ongoing situation in Syria.” The explosion comes weeks after Trump ordered the withdrawal of American troops from the region and on the same day Vice President Mike Pence told the Global Chiefs of Mission conference at the State Department that “the caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated.” Manbij is just south of Turkey, in an area held by U.S.-allied Kurdish forces. Trump spoke with Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan Tuesday, in which they reportedly discussed a safe zone for Turkey to set up inside Syria along the border This is an ongoing story, and more information on the number of those dead and the identities of the American troops will be added. • A Massive Winter Storm Blankets Parts Of The US, Kills Five

By Chuck Ross - A massive winter storm stretching from the Great Plains to the East Coast is dumping snow and causing hundreds of traffic accidents as thousands shelter under winter storm warnings. Winter Storm Gia hit Missouri hard Friday evening, stranding motorists overnight and causing five deaths from traffic accidents in the icy conditions. Roughly 500 traffic accidents have been reported to authorities, The Weather Channel reports. Thousands in Missouri remained stranded on highways Saturday morning with traffic stopped or barely inching forward. Parts of the state had received up to 15 inches of snow by that point. Winter storm warnings stretch from areas in Kansas to Rhode Island as Gia continues to drop snow across hundreds of miles. Parts of Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska all received more than 10 inches of snow. Parts of Illinois received over a foot. In Columbia, Missouri, the icy conditions caused an airplane to slide off a runway at the city’s airport. No injuries were reported. The 80 passengers stranded on the runway were forced to evacuate the plane three at a time by emergency personnel because a bus could not reach them on the ice-covered tarmac, KOMU reports. Meteorologists expect snow to come down over a wide area Saturday evening, from North Carolina to Pennsylvania and from Kansas to New Jersey. The storm is expected to lessen some on Sunday, but still drop freezing rain and some snow over hundreds of miles while moving slowly toward the direction of New England, The Weather Channel reports. • Partial Government Shutdown Now The Longest In US History

By Evie Fordham - The partial government shutdown that started Dec. 22 became the longest in U.S. history Saturday, after surpassing the record set by a 21-day shutdown in 1995 and 1996. The current shutdown is on Day 22 and was triggered after a short-term continuing resolution to fund the government expired on Dec. 21. At the center of the funding battle is approximately $5 billion in funding for the border wall that President Donald Trump wants to build. This shutdown has now surpassed a previous one that began Dec. 16, 1995, and ended Jan. 6, 1996. The 21-day funding gap occurred when former President Bill Clinton refused to cut spending but was hamstrung by former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s refusal to raise the debt ceiling, according to USA Today. Clinton won out according to most accounts by submitting a seven-year balanced budget plan. Gingrich was ridiculed by the media when he said he had been willing to shut down the government twice in 1995 because he felt he had been disrespected during a trip on Air Force One. But the Trump administration does not hold the record for most days of shutdown in a 365-day period. That one belongs to former President Jimmy Carter’s administration. There were three shutdowns that added up to a total of 28 days in 1977 when Carter was president. There have been three partial government shutdowns under Trump so far: the ongoing one, a three-day shutdown in January 2018 and an overnight shutdown in February that did not result in any federal employees being furloughed. The partial government shutdown affects nine departments including Agriculture, Interior and Homeland Security. Now that many federal employees have missed a paycheck, they and their bosses are entering unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory.  Transportation Security Administration officials, for example, are worried about employees calling out sick en masse in a “sickout” after Friday. When will the shutdown end? Trump has teased his ability to declare emergency powers to fund a border wall, but for now, his administration is still trying to work with congressional Democrats.
