John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Kavanaugh Cleared of Wrongdoing in Senate Judiciary Committee Investigation

Recommended Posts

The Senate Judiciary Committee cleared Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of all wrongdoing on Saturday, noting that they found “no verifiable evidence” to support sexual misconduct allegations levied against him during his confirmation hearing in September.

    • Judiciary Committee Democrat Floats Perjury Probe Of Justice Brett Kavanaugh

By Kevin Daley - Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Neguse of Colorado, a freshman member of the House Judiciary Committee, told constituents that the panel will likely investigate Justice Brett Kavanaugh for perjury. “There’s no question [Kavanaugh] committed perjury during the confirmation hearings and so forth,” Neguse said when asked if the justice might be impeached. “I think the Judiciary Committee is likely to take that up.” A conservative opposition research group obtained and disseminated video of Neguse’s comments. The congressman was not specific as to which of Kavanaugh’s statements might rise to the level of perjury. Democrats have put forward various theories as to how Kavanaugh misled the Senate Judiciary Committee during his confirmation hearings: one theory, which NBC News advanced, held that he lied concerning when he first learned about the allegations of Deborah Ramirez, a Yale classmate who accused Kavanaugh of drunkenly exposing himself to her at a party. In response to questions from lawmakers during his second confirmation hearing, Kavanaugh said he first learned of Ramirez’s claims from the New Yorker, the venue in which her story appeared. NBC subsequently recovered text messages revealing that the justice and his allies were discussing Ramirez’s allegations before the story’s publication, prompting charges of perjury. However, Kavanaugh told Senate investigators before the hearing that he learned Ramirez was searching for witnesses to corroborate her story well in advance the New Yorker story’s publication, thereby belying the perjury charges. The NBC report was stealth edited, and a correction was never issued. Other theories suppose that the justice lied about the contents of his high school yearbook or hid his complicity with a White House staffer who stole strategy memos from Senate Democrats during his service in the George W. Bush administration. Neither of those propositions has been substantiated. Requests for comment from the congressman’s office went unanswered. Kavanaugh has kept a low profile since joining the high court in October 2018. Though the justices often teach in law schools or speak to various professional groups when the Court is not hearing cases, Kavanaugh’s schedule of public engagements appears rather thin. Similarly, his maneuvers on the Court reflect a sense of caution: he joined Chief Justice John Roberts and the liberal bloc to keep the Court out of controversies relating to abortion and the census, while his style at oral argument is deferential and inconspicuous. Democratic U.S. Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, the new chair of the Judiciary Committee, was overheard discussing a prospective Kavanaugh impeachment at some length on board the Acela train to Washington, D.C. just days after the midterm elections. • Maxine Waters Finds Her First Target As House Financial Services Committee Chair

By Jason Hopkins - In her first major policy speech since taking the reins of a powerful House committee, California Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters announced that she will be targeting acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney. “The time for accountability for his actions is about to begin,” Waters said Wednesday at an event hosted by the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank. Since Democrats took control of the House of Representatives, Waters has taken the gavel of the House Financial Services Committee. A longtime critic of the Trump administration, Waters vowed to hold hearings involving other White House officials, and also plans to target the banking industry. The California Democrat has taken issue with Mulvaney’s tenure as the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency he led from November 2017 to December 2018. Waters suggested he tried to dismantle the CFPB by rolling back fair housing safeguards and protections for consumers. “It is a new day in Congress and for the Financial Services Committee,” she said, adding that her committee will push legislation that seeks to undo the rollbacks. Waters is just one of a number of new Democratic committee leaders who plan to vehemently target the Trump administration for the next two years. House Democrats are expected to hold several dozen investigations, with Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff announcing that every committee will focus on investigating the White House. Like other newly-empowered Democratic chairmen, Waters will enjoy subpoena power, but will not be able to unilaterally reform legislation while the GOP still controls the Senate and the White House. There is no love lost between Waters and President Donald Trump. The California Democrat has established herself as one of the president’s harshest critics and a fervent purveyor of Trump-Russia conspiracy theories. While speaking at an event hosted by the Congressional Black Caucus in 2017, she “guaranteed” that the president was “in collusion with the Russians to undermine our democracy.” Trump has responded in kind with attacks against the lawmaker’s intelligence. He called Waters “a very low IQ individual” while headlining at campaign rally in March 2018 and has made similar statements on Twitter. • ACLU Wants Senate to Grill AG Nominee William Barr Over Surveillance, Privacy Concerns

By Thomas Anderson - Attorney General nominee William Barr has a controversial past, according to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). ACLU is warning lawmakers that Barr’s “record regarding the privacy and Fourth Amendment…raises serious concerns about his suitability” for the position. That controversial past, according to ACLU, involves warrantless surveillance of the American people and the push to make it easier for phone companies to turn over customer records to the government. ACLU contends that Barr helped build the surveillance state in the U.S., which has influenced other countries to do the same. Barr served as Attorney General under George H.W. Bush, where he reportedly played an integral role in creating the framework for the National Security Agency’s (NSA) bulk data collection program. Barr, with the help of his then-deputy Robert Mueller, created a program that allowed the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Justice Department to collect telephone records of millions of Americans – whether or not they were suspected of criminal activity. Details of that program were first revealed in 2015. In 2003, Barr argued that the PATRIOT Act did not address what he viewed as “severe problems” with FISA, the law that allowed for the collection of electronic foreign intelligence. Barr argued in favor of eliminating the need for “probable cause” that individuals targeted by FISA were acting on behalf of a foreign power. He pointed to law enforcement’s difficulty in doing so in the case of Zacarias Moussaoui, al Qaeda member, who was later sentenced to life in prison for plotting to take part in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. In the George W. Bush era, Barr served as general counsel and vice president at Verizon. During this period, the company participated in Stellar Wind, a warrantless surveillance program. Verizon allowed the NSA to intercept the contents of Americans’ emails and phone calls. The Justice Department would eventually conclude that parts of the program were illegal. Barr, while serving as Verizon’s general counsel, also lobbied Congress to provide telecom companies with immunity – retroactive and future – from private lawsuits for participating in surveillance programs. “Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee must seize their opportunity to question Barr thoroughly and determine whether he will protect Americans from government intrusions and expansive executive power if he’s returned to run the Justice Department for a second time,” ACLU says. Barr is expected to succeed Sessions as Attorney General. Despite the ACLU’s argument, he is highly qualified for the position. • Senate Democrats Have A Strategy To End The Shutdown

By Molly Prince - A growing number of Senate Democrats are refusing to vote in favor of any legislation until an appropriations bill is passed to end the government shutdown. The Republican-led House passed a stopgap funding bill on Dec. 20 that included $5.7 billion to construct a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, however, with a 51-seat majority, Senate Republicans fell short of the necessary 60 votes needed to send it to President Donald Trump’s desk for signature. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to kill the legislation on arrival in the Senate, and consequently, a government shutdown has been in effect since funding expired Dec. 21. After Democrats took the control of the House, the chamber passed a stopgap spending bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security without any wall appropriations, as well as a second consolidated spending bill to fund the remaining agencies. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell rejected the Democrats’ House-passed bill calling the lack of border security funding a “non-starter.” In an attempt to re-open the government, Schumer and his Democratic caucus are quietly planning to block legislation that McConnell brings to the floor, according to The Washington Post. The first piece of legislation to be protested is a bill to authorize security assistance to Israel. “Senate Democrats should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government until Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allow a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government,” tweeted Maryland Democrat Sen. Chris Van Hollen. “Mitch, don’t delay. Let’s vote!” “The House has already passed bipartisan bills to end the #TrumpShutdown. I agree with [Van Hollen],” Massachusetts Democrat Sen. Elizabeth Warren responded. “The Senate’s first and only order of business right now should be passing that same legislation.” Other Democrat senators who have advocated for the strategy include Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California and Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Even if the Democrat-sponsored bill is passed in the Senate, Trump has pledged to veto any measures that exclude funding for a border wall. • Republicans Have Questions For John Huber, The US Attorney Overseeing Investigation Of FBI

By Chuck Ross - A group of top House Republicans is asking the Justice Department for details of an investigation into the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton and Trump-Russia probes that is being conducted by U.S. Attorney John Huber. In a letter sent Monday, the Republicans pressed Huber, the U.S. attorney for Utah, for details about witnesses and documents reviewed as part of the investigation. Almost no details have emerged about Huber’s investigation since he was appointed in March 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions to investigate the FBI’s handling of the politically-charged investigations of Clinton and Trump. Sessions appointed Huber as a compromise to Republican pressure to appoint a special counsel to investigate the FBI’s investigation of the Trump campaign. “During the course of our extensive investigation we have interviewed more than a dozen current and former DOJ and FBI personnel, and were surprised to hear none of these potentially informative witnesses testified to speaking with you,” Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, Georgia Rep. Doug Collins and North Carolina Rep. Mark Meadows wrote to Huber. Republicans have accused the FBI and Justice Department of misleading the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court in applications for surveillance warrants against former Trump campaign aide Carter Page. The FBI relied heavily on the unverified Steele dossier to obtain four warrants against Page. Jordan, Collins and Meadows are asking Huber to identify which witnesses he has interviewed as part of his investigation. They are also asking for details of the number of documents that have been reviewed in the investigation, including the number of Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act applications.
