John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Discussing politics in the internet age requires careful thought, introspection, and the proper level of hatred for the opposing side. That's why it's important to keep the golden rule of political discourse in mind:

    • Gillibrand Makes Her First Political Flip Flop Since Announcing Presidential Run

By Molly Prince - Gillibrand Makes Her First Political Flip Flop Since Announcing Presidential Run Molly Prince on January 16, 2019 Democratic New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand reversed her position on allowing illegal immigrants to obtain drivers’ licenses only a day after she announced that she would be seeking the Democratic nomination for the presidency in 2020. During her presidential campaign kickoff on Wednesday, Gillibrand told reporters in just outside of Troy, New York that she is now supportive of granting illegal immigrants the ability to procure a drivers’ license, reported the New York Daily News. “I think we have to make it possible for people to provide for their families,” the New York senator said. “We need comprehensive immigration reform.Without doing that, you’re not going to get the problem solved for the rest of the country.” Gillibrand notably expressed her opposition to the proposal in 2007 while she was serving as the congresswoman for New York’s 20th Congressional District, according to The Free Beacon. Instead, she supported legislation requiring individuals to provide proof of citizenship prior to obtaining a driver’s license. Gillibrand announced on Tuesday that she is launching an exploratory committee to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020. Only months earlier, she pledged prior to her midterm election she would serve her full six-year term if re-elected to the Senate. After she handily won re-election by 33 points in November, she seemingly walked back that pledge. Following Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Gillibrand is the second senator, and second female senator, to declare their plans to begin the legal process of running for president in 2020. Gillibrand’s campaign will likely focus on intersectionality and gender politics as she tries to carve out a niche in a potentially crowded Democratic primary field. She attended a private meeting with roughly 20 feminist leaders on Saturday, including feminist Gloria Steinem, asking for their assistance with her impending presidential run. • Trump invites members of both parties to discuss border funding impasse – not everyone showed up

By R. Mitchell - President Donald Trump invited Democrats and Republicans to lunch Tuesday to negotiate a compromise that would secure the southern border and re-open the federal government, but, according to the White House, it was a one-sided affair. “As Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi refuse to negotiate, President Donald J. Trump and his team are working hard to find solutions to solve the humanitarian and national security crisis at the border and reopen the government,” White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement. “Today, the President offered both Democrats and Republicans the chance to meet for lunch at the White House. Unfortunately, no Democrats will attend.” The White House released the names of those who showed up to work on re-opening the government, and it’s as lopsided as Sanders said: Trump has a compromise ready for congressional consideration, but he needs at least 6 Democrats to put America’s security, the safety of our border agents and the financial well-being of furloughed government workers ahead of their ‘stop Trump at all costs’ agenda. “The President has a proposal on the table that includes additional technology at ports of entry, allows minors from Central America to seek asylum in their home country, and physical barriers between ports of entry made of steel instead of concrete,” Sanders said. “The President looks forward to having a working lunch with House Republicans to solve the border crisis and reopen the government. It’s time for the Democrats to come to the table and make a deal.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have cast aside the pleas of border patrol agents and leadership to fund the border barriers they say they desperately need to do their work safely and effectively. By not even bothering to show up to a good faith negotiation, Chuck, Nancy and the Democrats have proven that this isn’t a common sense approach to national security – it’s just politics. • Steyer Dumps More Cash Into Impeach Movement As Dems Jump On Board

By Chris White - Billionaire Tom Steyer is dumping more money into his campaign to oust President Donald Trump as incoming Democratic lawmakers consider jumping on board the movement to impeach the president. Steyer is plowing another $6 million into what some Democratic leaders worry is an ill-fated attempt to impeach the president, The Daily Beast reported Friday. Some liberal progressive lawmakers are warming to the idea, while House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi pushes back. He remains focused on “getting Donald Trump out of the White House,” Need to Impeach strategist Kevin Mack told reporters. “We’d like to have that happen through impeachment but if we have to we’ll beat him at the ballot box in 2020,” he noted, referring to speculation of Steyer’s political ambition. That bulk of the cash will go to national cable and broadcast advertising in early presidential primary states like Iowa, Nevada, and South Carolina. Approximately $2.5 million will go to television campaigns while another $3.5 million is expected to be plowed into a digital effort. The news comes after incoming Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan said Thursday evening that “we’re gonna go in there and impeach the motherfucker.” Pelosi, a California Democrat, told reporters on Thursday: “I don’t like that language, I wouldn’t use that language, but I wouldn’t establish language standards for my colleagues.” She pushed back on the thrust of the remark while defending Tlaib, saying it’s “nothing worse than the president has said.” Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia echoed Pelosi’s rebuke, telling reporters that Tlaib’s comments were “disgusting” and “horrible.” Neither Steyer nor any other Democrat pushing for impeachment have explained on why Trump should be removed. “You gave Democrats the power to hold him in check,” the billionaire said in an ad. “A majority vote in the House can impeach him and expose his lawless behavior for all to see. They just need the will.” Steyer created political advocacy group NextGen America in 2012 and has shoveled more than $100 million into various political campaigns since 2016. He has seen little success on this front, however, as many of the candidates and initiatives he has promoted in the past have fallen flat. The billionaire Democratic financier forked over more than $5 million into Tallahassee, Florida, Mayor Andrew Gillum’s unsuccessful gubernatorial run. Gillum was one of a handful of Democratic candidates pushing for Trump’s ouster. • The Signs of Political Idolatry

by Timothy J. Keller   One of the signs that an object is functioning as an idol is that fear becomes one of the chief characteristics of life. When we center our lives on the idol, we become dependent on it. If our counterfeit god is threatened in any way, our response is complete panic. We do not say, ‘What a shame, how difficult,’ but rather ‘This is the end! There’s no hope!’   This may be a reason why so many people now respond to U.S. political trends in such an extreme way. When either party wins an election, a certain percentage of the losing side talks openly about leaving the country. They become agitated and fearful for the future. They have put the kind of hope in their political leaders and policies that once was reserved for God and the work of the gospel. When their political leaders are out of power, they experience a death. They believe that if their policies and people are not in power, everything will fall apart. They refuse to admit how much agreement they actually have with the other party, and instead focus on the points of disagreement. The points of contention overshadow everything else, and a poisonous environment is created.   Another sign of idolatry in our politics is that opponents are not considered to be simply mistaken but to be evil. After the last presidential election, my eighty-four-year-old mother observed, ‘It used to be that whoever was elected as your president, even if he wasn’t the one you voted for, he was still your president. That doesn’t seem to be the case any longer.’ After each election, there is now a significant number of people who see the incoming president lacking moral legitimacy. The increasing political polarization and bitterness we see in U.S. politics today is a sign that we have made political activism into a form of religion. How does idolatry produce fear and demonization?   Dutch-Canadian philosopher Al Wolters taught that in the biblical view of things, the main problem in life is sin, and the only solution is God and his grace. The alternative to this view is to identify something besides sin as the main problem with the world and something besides God as the main remedy. That demonizes something that is not completely bad, and makes and idol out of something that cannot be the ultimate good.   …In political idolatry, we make a god out of having power.   Source: https://www.monergism.com/signs-political-idolatry
