John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • FBI’s Former Top Lawyer Acknowledged ‘Unusual’ Steps In Early Days Of Russia Probe

By Chuck Ross - The FBI’s former general counsel acknowledged a series of ‘abnormal’ and ‘unusual’ steps that were taken during the early days of the bureau’s investigation into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russia James Baker told lawmakers last year that during the 2016 campaign, a DNC lawyer provided him with information alleging that a Russian bank had a back channel communication system with Trump entities Baker also said that he reviewed an application for a surveillance warrant against Trump aide Carter Page, even though he rarely if ever handled warrant applications in other cases James Baker, the FBI’s former top lawyer, told Congress last year about a series of “unusual” and “abnormal” steps he took in the early days of the bureau’s investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. Baker told lawmakers during testimony on Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 that even though he rarely handled applications for surveillance warrants against American citizens, he reviewed one that the FBI was seeking against Carter Page, the former Trump campaign adviser. Baker, who resigned from the FBI in May 2018, also said that a meeting he had on Sept. 19, 2016, with a lawyer working for the DNC. The meeting was unprecedented for Baker, who told lawmakers that he could not recall ever having met with an outside counsel during his FBI tenure. That same attorney, Michael Sussmann, worked for the law firm that hired Fusion GPS, the company behind the Steele dossier. Sussmann was also peddling information related to the Trump-Russia investigation to media outlets during the same time period he was meeting with Baker. Baker disclosed those details in testimony before a task force comprised of members of the House Judiciary and House Oversight Committees. Republicans on the task force have investigated the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe, as well as its claims to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) to obtain warrants against Page. Baker defended he FBI’s handling of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant applications. He did not acknowledge that his activities in the beginning stages of the FBI probe were improper or unethical. Baker told lawmakers that he normally did not handle FBI applications for surveillance warrants against American citizens, but made an exception for an application to spy on Page because of the sensitivity of the matter. Baker said that he wanted to review the initial FISA application relatively early in the process, before it reached the desk of then-FBI Director James Comey. “So I wanted to see it when it was gelled enough but before it went through the process and before it went to the director. I wanted to see it and I wanted to read it because I knew it was sensitive,” Baker told House investigators, according to Fox News. “So that is why you took the abnormal or unusual step in this particular situation because it was sensitive?” a Republican asked Baker. “Yes,” he replied, adding that, “I wanted to make sure that we were filing something that would adhere to the law and stand up over time.” He also said that “almost all of the FISA applications did not go through me.” House Republicans have accused the FBI of misleading the FISC by failing to disclose details about the origins of the Steele dossier, the infamous and unverified document that alleges a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Kremlin. The FBI relied heavily on the dossier to obtain four FISA warrants against Page. The applications for those warrants did not disclose that the DNC and Clinton campaign funded the report, which was written by former British spy Christopher Steele. The FBI also did not disclose that Steele had expressed his desire to see Donald Trump lose the election. Baker also laid out details of a meeting he had on Sept. 19, 2016, with Michael Sussmann, an attorney for Perkins Coie, which represented the DNC. Perkins Coie is the firm that hired Fusion GPS to investigate Donald Trump’s links to Russia. Fusion, in turn, hired Steele. Baker acknowledged that the meeting with Sussmann was abnormal in that he had never before met with an attorney who directly provided him evidence related to an investigation. In the meeting, Sussmann provided Baker with information alleging that the servers of Russian bank Alfa Bank were in communication with the Trump Organization’s servers. Baker told lawmakers that Sussmann described “what appeared to be a surreptitious channel of communications” between Trump’s enterprises and “a Russian organization associated with the Russian Government.” Sussmann shared similar information with reporters from multiple news outlets. He was a source for The New York Times, and the House Intelligence Committee revealed in a report released on April 27 that Sussmann spoke with Franklin Foer, a journalist who laid out the Alfa-Trump connection in a story published by Slate on Oct. 31, 2016. The story came under intense scrutiny, with numerous computer experts claiming that the contacts described in the piece could have been innocuous rather than evidence of a back channel connection between the Russian bank and Trump firm. One theory laid out by Republicans is that Clinton and DNC operatives, including Sussmann and Fusion GPS, attempted to disseminate allegations made in the dossier to as many people as possible, including in the media and at the FBI. One goal, according to the GOP theory, is that the operatives hoped the recipients of the information would take Russia allegations more seriously if they saw the allegations coming in through multiple sources that appeared unrelated. That strategy worked in at least one instance. The FBI stated in its FISA applications that a Sept. 23, 2016 article published at Yahoo! about Page did not appear to come from the same source as the dossier. But it turned out that Steele, the dossier author, had met with Michael Isikoff, the author of the Yahoo article, in mid-September 2016. Steele and Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson met with Isikoff and other journalists to provide information found in the dossier. They also reached out to and met separately with Bruce Ohr, a Justice Department official who would serve as Steele’s back channel to the FBI after the 2016 election. Ohr, whose wife happened to work for Fusion GPS, shared information he received from Steele in a meeting on July 30, 2016 with then-FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. It is unclear from Baker’s testimony whether he realized that the information from Sussmann mirrored information that appears to have been gathered by Fusion GPS and Steele. Steele’s Sept. 14, 2016 memo refers to Alfa Bank and its three founders. Baker acknowledged that he took the allegations seriously because they were coming from Sussmann, with whom he had worked at the Justice Department. “Is it fair to say that any materials passed by the FBI general counsel automatically have a reliability and a level of credibility attached to them? You’re the FBI’s general counsel, if you’re getting information from an outside source and passing it, [sic] on that means something,” one lawmaker asked Baker, according to The Epoch Times, which reported details of Baker’s testimony. “I suppose so, Congressman,” Baker replied. He also said that his encounter with Sussmann was “first” and “only” time he received information about an investigation from an outside attorney. “[This] is the first time and to your recollection the only time an outside counsel had information and was wanting to make sure it got to the general counsel of the FBI, and it happened to deal with the Russia investigation,” Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan said. “I think that’s correct. Sitting here today, that’s the only one I can remember,” Baker said. • China’s Plans for Global Dominance Include Supplanting the United States’ Leadership Position

By R. Mitchell - Anyone who doubts whether the world is once again immersed in great power competition should read the 2019 China Military Power Report released today by the Defense Intelligence Agency. The 140-page booklet explains China’s strategy and its efforts to supplant the United States and impose its rules on the international order. In a preface to the report, Army Lt. Gen. Robert P. Ashley, the DIA director, said that as China grows in strength and confidence, it will insist on “having a greater voice in global interactions, which at times may be antithetical to U.S. interests.” It’s modeled after the Reagan era’s Soviet Military Power series, and it uses the words of Chinese leaders and publications to make its case. It also details Chinese strategy and the history behind it. The report looks at China’s goals, detailing changes in the structures and commands in the People’s Liberation Army. It also looks at military modernization and the underlying goals of Chinese leaders. It serves as a primer for what the U.S. military must counter and where American money would best be spent. “With a deeper understanding of the military might behind Chinese economic and diplomatic efforts,” Ashley continued, “we can provide our own national political, economic, and military leaders the widest range of options for choosing when to counter, when to encourage, and when to join with China in actions around the world.” China refers to its military strategy as “active defense” which uses offensive actions if the government believes that an enemy may do something against the interests of China, even if the adversary takes no offensive action. Believing this modernization is needed for the country to achieve great power status, Chinese leaders are investing in capabilities across all domains of warfare. What it does with this new-found power is what concerns U.S. and allied leaders. China could impose its will in the region in Asia and around the globe. China’s threat matrix is not limited to global powers. In fact, its own internal reports list small local countries as primary threats: Border Disputes Investment and Modernization China began seriously investing in its military in 2000 and increased its spending by 10% per year until 2016 when it slowed to 5-to-7-percent growth. It is estimated that China spent more than $200 Billion on defense in 2018 which is a three-fold increase since 2002. The Chinese army, the PLA, and navy, the PLAN, are working to enhance their capability to project power globally. Transport aircraft from Russia and the first Chinese aircraft carrier will go a long way to allowing Beijing to move troops, supplies and equipment around the world. China’s carrier performed sea trials in 2018 and is expected to go into service in 2019. Counterspace China has a significant space presence including communications and intelligence satellites and now it is investing serious resources into anti-satellite weaponry. Conclusion China is investing vast sums of money and tremendous resources into modernizing its army and navy. While still years away from being able deploy a massive conventional force across the globe, it is a regional military superpower with significant conventional, nuclear, and space-based assets. China will use its capabilities to push disputed borders further out, reunify Taiwan with the mainland and increase its presence in the South China sea and Indian Ocean. Beijing will also continue its New Silk Road Belt and Road initiative to build ports for less-fortunate countries while indebting those nations to China. This new wave of soft-imperialism will create challenges for NATO, the European Union and the United States. Full 2019 China Military Power Report China-Military-Power-FINAL-5MB-20190103

    • Family Of Man Wrongfully Accused By Shaun King Receives Threats

By Molly Prince - The family of a white man who was wrongfully accused of gunning down a 7-year-old black girl has continued to receive death threats even after he was officially determined not to have any involvement in the crime. Robert Cantrell was accused of killing Jazmine Barnes in a racially-motivated drive-by shooting in northeast Houston. Barnes was sitting in the backseat of her mother’s car on Dec. 30 when another vehicle pulled up alongside and began spraying bullets. The crime received national attention after Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and activist Shaun King began to promote a narrative that a white man murdered Barnes, which they continued to push even after they received a tip that a 20-year-old black man named Eric Black Jr. and another individual had shot Barnes. King widely circulated a sketch of the alleged perpetrator along with Cantrell’s mugshot. Cantrell, who had been arrested on unrelated felony charges resembled the composite. In a now-deleted tweet, King asked his more than one million followers for information on Cantrell. “What more can you tell me about Robert Cantrell? He was arrested in Houston hours after Jazmine was murdered on another violent crime spree,” King tweeted. “We’ve had 20 people call or email us and say he is a racist, violent asshole and always has been. Just tell me everything you know.” Despite the arrest of two black men for their involvement in the crime, Cantrell and his family continue to receive threats. Hailey Cantrell, Robert’s niece told ABC7 that they are still being posted on Facebook. “I hear, ‘Someone is going to rape, torture and murder the women and children in your family,” Hailey read. “I just want everyone to back off,” Hailey said. “The truth is out. It had nothing to do with us, nothing to do with my uncle at all.” Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
