John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

NORTH HERO, VT—It's Halloween, which means trick-or-treaters are beginning to flood the streets of cities and towns all across the country in a beloved tradition. Children joyously knock on doors and receive candy at most of the houses in their neighborhood—most of the houses, that is, except for that of Bernie Sanders.

    • Over Two Dozen Former Campaign Workers For Bernie Sanders Write Letter Describing ‘Dangerous’ Culture Of ‘Sexual Violence’ In 2016

By Joe Simonson - A number of alumni from Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign wrote a letter in hopes of having a meeting with the Vermont senator and his closest advisers in order to discuss rampant “sexual violence and harassment” employees faced during the last Democratic primary. The letter, obtained by Politico, features the signatures of over two dozen women and men who say a “dangerous dynamic” existed during the last campaign. “We request that Jeff Weaver, Caryn Compton, Ari Rabin-Havt, Arianna Jones, Shannon Jackson, and any other relevant staff who may have input in the creation of a ‘gold-standard’ harassment policy, be present to make sure that our discussion is collaborative and results in tangible next steps we can be proud to stand in support of,” the letter reads. The names of the individuals behind the letter have not been released but were described by Politico as ranging “from field organizers to some of the top officials on the 2016 campaign.” Sanders’ campaign committee, Friends of Bernie Sanders, released a statement to Politico in response to the letter, saying “harassment of any kind is intolerable.” “We always welcome hearing the experiences and views of our former staff. We also value their right to come to us in a private way so their confidences and privacy are respected. And we will honor this principle with respect to this private letter,” Friends of Bernie Sanders said. • Trump Rounds Up Allies To Aggressively Challenge China for Stealing Technology

By Chris White - The United States and a score of other western allies joined together Thursday to blame China for a more than decade-long effort to gobble up trade secrets and technology from a dozen countries. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin blocked a proposal to impose sanctions on Chinese agents implicated in hackings, The Washington Post reported, citing anonymous sources. Mnuchin blocked the measure out of fear that it would interfere with U.S.-China trade talks. Thursday’s accusations came as the Justice Department unveiled indictments against two Chinese hackers, who it said acted “in association with” the Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS). Two members of a hacking squad known as “Advanced Persistent Threat 10” were accused of conspiracy to commit computer intrusions and wire fraud, the indictment said. They allegedly presided over a Chinese-government-backed campaign of cyber theft targeting advanced technologies with commercial and military applications. Hackers also went after companies widely considered gatekeepers to computer networks serving scores of corporate clients. Government officials believe the hackers were acting on behalf of China as the communist nation works to supplant the U.S. as a global power. “China’s goal, simply put, is to replace the U.S. as the world’s leading superpower, and they’re using illegal methods to get there,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told reporters. More than 90 percent of cases alleging economic espionage involved China as did more than two-thirds of trade secret theft prosecutions, according to Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein. Most of China’s actions have come over the past seven years – and there is some evidence some of U.S.’ biggest allies are taking the hackings seriously. “This demonstrates there’s a strong well of international support the United States can tap . . . Countries are fed up,” Ely Ratner, executive vice president of the Center for a New American Security, told reporters. Officials from London, Canberra, Ottawa, and Wellington knocked China for violating previously pledges to avoid hacking for commercial gain. Some analysts are skeptical the indictments and alliance will have any effect. “Just as when the Obama administration did it, indicting a handful of Chinese agents out of the tens of thousands involved in economic espionage is necessary but not important,” Derek Scissors, a China analyst at the American Enterprise Institute, told reporters. The U.S.’ move comes amid President Donald Trump’s tariff war against China. The president reached a major agreement with Chinese President Xi Jinpin during a Dec. 2 meeting ahead of a G-20 summit. The meeting temporarily staved off an escalating trade battle between the world’s two biggest economies. There’s also fears that China is using American automakers and Silicon Valley companies to expand its tech dominance. Tesla and General Motors are among 200 companies transmitting position information and other data to government-backed monitoring centers in China. The information is regularly cobbled and delivered without citizen’s knowledge. • Bernie Sanders Accused Of Using Government To Target Company That Ran Political Ad Against Him

By Molly Prince - The office of Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders is being accused of wielding its political power in order to seek retribution against a Vermont business owner who ran an ad attacking Sanders over his hypocrisy. Rodolphe “Skip” Vallee, the CEO of St. Albans-based gasoline distributor and retailer R.L. Vallee, is alleging that Sanders and his senior press adviser, Daniel McLean, conspired against the business owner by drumming up a class-action lawsuit, according to federal court documents. Vallee, who owns more than 45 gas stations in and around Vermont, produced an anti-Sanders television advertisement that aired locally in September 2014. The advertisement criticized Sanders for lambasting “the rich” over receiving tax breaks and golden parachutes, while his wife Jane Sanders received a $200,000 golden parachute after her involvement in a land deal helped to bankrupt Burlington College while she was president. The Vermont senator’s office called the ad “pathetic” and referred to Vallee as a “junior varsity version of the Koch brothers.” Only a week later, Sanders and McLean allegedly sat down with members of the Vermont attorney general’s office where the duo broached suspicion that Vallee’s company was participating in price-fixing. Assistant Vermont Attorney General Ryan Kriger was one of the officials who met with Bernie Sanders and McLean. His hand recorded notes during the meeting noted that the office of the attorney general should “bring [a] case [against Vallee] just to make a point,” reported Seven Days, an independent Vermont newspaper. It is not clear whether Bernie Sanders or McLean originally made the comment. Following the meeting, McLean sent correspondence to Kriger multiple times inquiring whether or not former Vermont Attorney General Bill Sorrell would take legal action against Vallee. Sorrell ultimately declined to pursue any legal action, however, just over a year later, two law firms filed a $100 million class-action lawsuit against R.L. Vallee and three other companies alleging anti-competitive practices. In the months following Bernie Sanders and McLeans’ meeting with the AG’s office, and leading up to the filing, McLean corresponded with attorneys at both law firms involved in the lawsuit, some of which was via his personal email account. Vallee subpoenaed McLean in November seeking a deposition and access to thousands of documents from Bernie Sanders’ office. The Vermont senator’s office responded by calling the request a “fishing expedition” and argued that McLean, in his official capacity as a federal employee, could not be subpoenaed. Vallee’s attorneys fired back Thursday claiming that by asserting sovereign immunity “it strains credulity that Mr. McLean’s official duties as a press aide for a United States Senator” included “attempting to persuade the [Federal Trade Commission] or Vermont Attorney General’s Office to bring a public enforcement action against Vermont companies” and “coordinating with Washington, D.C.-based counsel to develop a private, class-action litigation against Vermont constituents (‘just to make a point’).” Vallee has helped to elect Republican politicians by fundraising hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was appointed the position of U.S. ambassador to Slovakia by former President George W. Bush in 2005. Bernie Sanders’ office did not return the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
