John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    • Hurrah: Female Marine Completes Gruelling Mountain School For The First Time

By American Media Institute - By Joseph Hammond Sgt. Tara-Lyn Baker is the first woman to become part of the frozen few. Over six grueling weeks, Sgt. Baker demonstrated a range of combat skills in snow and ice to complete the winter mountain leaders course at the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center near Bridgeport, California. A video published by the U.S. Marine Corp Times shows the 150 pound Marine executing maneuvers and training exercises. These include carrying a 60 to 90-pound backpack while skiing up steep mountains carrying heavy packs, shooting with deadly accuracy in the snow. Only the most “gung-ho” Marines are up to the challenge. During the course Marines learn how to fight, survive, and maneuver in sub-zero temperatures and is one of the most physically demanding training programs in the U.S. military. Military operations in mountainous areas add the challenge of verticality. Like some of her fellow Marines, Baker said suffered from frostbite and hypothermia. “We learn how to overcome it,” she said. Baker came to the school – located  6,800 feet above sea level – as a Marine Mechanic. In the video, Baker says she’s proud of her accomplishment. The Marines is the last branch of the U.S. armed services that still enforces gender segregation in boot camp but, in January an integrated a Marine training battalion was formed of one male and five male platoons for the first time. Lt. Marina Hierl, 24, became the first female Marine to lead a platoon last year after becoming the first woman to complete the Marines’ 13-week Infantry Officer Course in 2017. The Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center is located at a higher elevation than Camp Ethan Allen Training Site used by the U.S. Army (1,200 feet elevation) or US Navy Mountain Warfare Training Camp Michael Monsoor (3,500 feet elevation). Though at all centers actual training operations are often conducted in the surrounding areas. Specialized American soldiers also attend similar programs in allied countries. The facility was opened in 1951 to train U.S. soldiers for the Korean War. During the Cold War, the facility was used to train soldiers to protect Norway and the rest of NATO’s Northern Flank. The facility had taken on increased importance since September 11, 2001, when it was used in pre-deployment training for U.S. soldiers involved in Operation Enduring Freedom in mountainous Afghanistan. In one training scenario often used by the Marines, the trainee is meant to jump with their skis, poles and a give gallon pack into a hole cut into a frozen lake. “When you jump in, you lose your breath, you kind of lose your head,” said Sgt Aaron Jensen, a student of the school in a 2015 interview. The Marine has to throw the pack out of the water and swim to the edge. Once there, the Marine must verbally request permission to get out of the water. Then the training kicks in – participants roll in powdered snow to get the water off their clothes before a final sprint to warming tents to change and dry themselves. “You learn how to survive, you learn how to deal with the cold,” Baker said in a video posted on the service’s Twitter. • Russian Lawyer Linked To Trump Tower Meeting And Fusion GPS Is Charged In New York Case

By Chuck Ross - Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer at the center of a firestorm over a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower who also worked with the Democrat-connected opposition research firm Fusion GPS, was indicted on obstruction of justice charges in New York on Tuesday. According to the indictment, Veselnitskaya submitted an “intentionally misleading” declaration to the Justice Department in a civil case involving her client, Prevezon Holdings. The U.S. attorney’s office in New York sought millions of dollars from Prevezon as part of a civil case involving a massive money laundering scheme. The charges against Veselnitskaya are not related to the Trump Tower meeting, which was hosted on June 9, 2016 by Donald Trump Jr. But that meeting did center on issues related to Veselnitskaya’s work on behalf of Prevezon, which is controlled by a Russian businessman named Denis Katsyv. In the meeting, Veselnitskaya lobbied against the Magnitsky Act, a 2012 law that placed sanctions against Russian human rights abusers. As part of her work for Prevezon, Veselnitskaya mounted an aggressive campaign against Bill Browder, a London-based businessman who is the leading force behind the Magnitsky Act. Browder’s late lawyer, Sergei Magnitsky, was arrested in 2009 while investigating Prevezon’s alleged money laundering scheme. He later died in jail, with Browder claiming that Magnitsky was murdered because of what he uncovered about Prevezon. Veselnitskaya worked closely with Fusion GPS to investigate Browder. Fusion compiled reports questioning Browder’s claims about Magnitsky and the Prevezon case. At the same time, Fusion was working on that project, the Washington, D.C.-based firm was also working with former British spy Christopher Steele on an investigation of Donald Trump’s possible ties to Russia. Veselnitskaya was with Fusion GPS founder Glenn Simpson on the morning before the Trump Tower meeting. Fusion GPS also provided information that Veselnitskaya provided to Russia’s prosecutor general, Yuri Chaika. That same information was included in a memo that Veselnitskaya took into her meeting with Trump Jr. The memo sought to link Browder to illegal campaign donations to Democrats. In Tuesday’s indictment, prosecutors claim that Veselnitskaya submitted a document in the civil case against Prevezon that she claimed was based on an independent analysis that supported the company. Instead, according to the government, Veselnitskaya helped draft the report “in secret coordination” with a senior Russian prosecutor. • Nine Alleged MS-13 Members Charged in Violent Racketeering Conspiracy

By R. Mitchell - A federal grand jury returned a seventh superseding indictment Monday charging nine men in connection with a conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise known as La Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13. Charged in the seven-count superseding indictment are Junior Noe Alvarado-Requeno, aka “Insolente,” and “Trankilo,” 22, of Landover, Maryland; Michael Eduardo Contreras, aka “Katra,” and “Insoportable,” 24, of Silver Spring, Maryland; Luis Fernando Orellana-Estrada, aka “Pinguino,” 19, of Hyattsville, Maryland; Kevin Alexander Soriana-Hernandez, aka “Brocha,” 19, of Riverdale, Maryland; Carlos Daniel Cardenas-Banegas, aka “Perrico,” 20, of Riverdale, Maryland; Wilfredo Cardenas-Banegas, aka “Torro,” 25, of Riverdale, Maryland; Luis Arnoldo Flores-Reyes, aka “Maloso,” and “Lobo,” 37, of Arlington, Virginia; Miguel Angel Corea Diaz, aka “Reaper,” 36, of Long Branch, New Jersey and Jairo Arnaldo Jacome, aka “Abuelo,” 36, of Langley Park, Maryland. From 2015 through about January 2018, the defendants, as members and associates of MS-13, engaged in a racketeering conspiracy that included extortion, drug trafficking, money laundering, robbery, murder, and conspiracy to commit murder, according to the indictment.  Jacome was a member and associate of the Langley Park Salvatrucha Clique of MS-13.  All other defendants were members and associates of the Sailors Clique of MS-13. Alvarado-Requeno, Contreras, Orellana-Estrada, Soriana-Hernandez, Wilfredo Cardenas-Banegas, Carlos Cardenas-Banegas, and Flores-Reyes were charged in a previous indictment with conspiracy to participate in a racketeering enterprise for their alleged involvement in a variety of violent acts taken by the Sailors Clique of MS-13, including multiple murders. Corea Diaz and Jacome are also charged with RICO conspiracy in the seventh superseding indictment, in which additional murders have been charged. Specifically, the indictment charges that in June 2016, Alvarado-Requeno and Contreras allegedly planned with and directed other members and associates of MS-13 to search for and murder gang rivals known as “chavalas” in and around Hyattsville, Maryland. On June 8, 2016, Alvarado-Requeno and Contreras directed lower-ranking members of MS-13 to murder two individuals who were believed to be members of the 18th Street gang. Pursuant to this plan and as directed by Alvarado-Requeno and Contreras, MS-13 members and associates stabbed the two victims to death in Hyattsville, Maryland. The indictment further charges that, on Dec. 4, 2016, Alvarado-Requeno, Contreras, Jacome and other members and associates of MS-13 allegedly traveled to Germantown, Maryland with a machete and other weapons with the purpose of murdering an individual as punishment for his infractions against the gang. They stabbed the victim to death, but fled the area leaving the victim’s body near a creek. The next day, Jacome and other members and associates of MS-13 returned to Germantown to bury the body of the victim. The indictment further charges that, on March 27, 2017, Contreras, Alvarado-Requeno, Flores-Reyes, and Corea-Diaz allegedly arranged for members and associates of the Sailors Clique to travel from Maryland to Lynchburg, Virginia for the purpose of murdering an individual in the Lynchburg area. Flores-Reyes provided the vehicle in which the members and associates drove and called them to provide encouragement to murder the victim. The victim was murdered that same day in Bedford County, Virginia. On March 27 and March 28, 2017, multiple individuals were arrested in connection with the murder. Contreras, Alvarado-Requeno, Flores-Reyes, and Corea-Diaz made phone calls on those dates trying to locate the individuals who had gone to Virginia to commit the murder. Two of the participants in the murder escaped from Bedford County and were hidden in Maryland by members and associates of the Sailors Clique. In addition to the new charges in the RICO conspiracy, Alvarado-Requeno, Contreras and Jacome are charged in the superseding indictment with murder in aid of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering in connection with the Dec. 4, 2016 murder. Alvarado-Requeno is also charged in the superseding indictment with murder in aid of racketeering and conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering in connection with a Gaithersburg, Maryland murder that took place on June 16, 2016.  Jacome is charged with conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by extortion.  All defendants are in custody. According to the superseding indictment, MS-13 is a national and international gang composed primarily of immigrants or descendants from El Salvador.  Branches or “cliques” of MS-13, one of the largest street gangs in the United States, operate throughout Prince George’s County and Montgomery County, Maryland. • Wife Of Green Beret Charged With Murder: Our Enemies Are Watching

By Hanna Bogorowski - The wife of a former U.S. Army Green Beret charged with the premeditated murder of an Afghan while serving overseas in 2010 issued a staunch defense of her husband on Wednesday as his case garners national attention, warning the U.S. that “our enemy” is watching the situation unfold. Julie Golsteyn defended her husband, U.S. Army Major Matt Golsteyn, on CNN’s Newsroom with Brooke Baldwin alongside her husband’s attorney, Phillip Stackhouse, saying her husband did “nothing wrong” and did not break any rules or laws of combat. The case surrounds Matt Golsteyn, who is facing murder charges for killing a suspected Taliban bomb-maker after he was forced to release him from captivity under the rules of engagement when the suspect wouldn’t cooperate with interrogators in Afghanistan in 2010. “I know that there are concerns depending on how this goes, how this might look, what message this may send to the 14,000 American forces still in Afghanistan,” host Brooke Baldwin said. “I want to hear what you want from this president, what you think justice will look like.” “I would like for my husband to have the first Christmas in the last eight without the Army, this cloud hanging over his head, when he did nothing wrong,” Golsteyn responded. “I would like for us to be able to enjoy the holidays with our newborn.” “And by the way, it’s not only how it looks to our men and women over there. Our enemy is also seeing this,” she said. A 2016 interview with Fox News in which Golsteyn re-upped the details of the murder triggered a new investigation and is the reason he’s currently facing murder charges. The former U.S. Army Major and his men believed the suspected bomber was responsible for the deaths of multiple U.S. Marines killed the day prior in 2010 and that a local tribal elder had identified him as a known militant. Golsteyn admitted in a 2011 interview with the CIA that he and his men conspired to kill the man. Golsteyn’s conduct and subsequent investigation resulted in administrative action recommending his discharge, but no criminal charges. President Donald Trump tweeted Sunday that he’d be reviewing the case of the “U.S. Military hero.” Baldwin asked Stackhouse whether Golsteyn knew he was breaking killing the suspected Taliban bomb-maker was against the rules of engagement. “He was aware of the rules of engagement. He exercised his discretion as a ground commander in Afghanistan,” the attorney responded, warning Baldwin against assuming that what the Green Beret did was illegal. Golsteyn’s wife did not respond as kindly. “[…] you are mischaracterizing the situation by saying that he did break the rules of engagement,” she said. “The Army’s own panel found in 2015 that he, in fact, did not break the rules of engagement.” ” I’m worried for [Matt] in some sense because [the charges] wrong. But I’m not worried, because he didn’t do anything wrong,” Julie added.
