John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Another topic worth starting and discussing elsewhere.

Which men are you talking about? Do you imagine that white men don't beat women or Asian men or Indian men don't beat women? You are diverting the conversation away from the topic of this thread. If you wish to start a thread on why men abuse women, we can discuss it there. This thread is about why black men are kneeling during the national anthem and whether or not it's disrespectful. I have laid out my reasons for why it is far from being disrespectful and instead an honorable act. Even the majority of white teammates linked arms with them in solidarity. Why is it so hard for white Christians to support justice in this issue?

Honestly, what is "the black culture?" I see Godly men on the front lines being a light in impoverished areas where immigrants and poor Americans reside. I see them helping the poor, the destitute and downtrodden. I see them leading churches without collecting a salary. I see them raising their families to love all forms of music and art. I see them being the hands and feet of Jesus. Tony Evans, a wonderful preacher in Dallas, wrote a book that changed my racist heart. The book was entitled, "Are Blacks Spiritually Inferior to Whites." In it Pastor Evans outlined the history of the Black Church in America. My ignorance was wiped away. My respect for the work of the gospel done by the Black Church over the centuries rose to great heights. In spite of facing great persecution both inside and outside of their communities, these men and women of God have persevered. They have persevered despite being looked down on, treated as a little baby sister to, and even hated by white Christian churches. They learned to pray deeply, to study God's word deeply, to love people and forgive people who continually wrong them, to be the hands and feet of Jesus. I cannot be silent when I hear such vile stereotyping. It would be like standing for the national anthem while my brother is lying dead in the street.

This individual doesn't understand the free market. His economic list is foolish and unproductive. Most black men will shake their heads at his list. Do you actually think every black person supports BLM? That would be like me thinking you all support David Duke. Now...back to grown men in the NFL protesting real injustice in our society...

Oh my goodness. I'm just going to pray for you cause I can't imagine harboring such racist beliefs and then claiming to be a Christian. This thread is breaking my heart for how far Christians have fallen away from seeking God's justice. I am amazed at the unblinking and open racism displayed by the white church in America.

Really? I am shaking my head reading your post. I don't even know where to begin. Why do white American Christians fail to acknowledge the racism their culture breeds and has settled into their own hearts. I cannot fathom how such blindness falls upon Christians who otherwise are seeking God. I can only ask God to utterly demolish the racism in his children’s hearts just as I pray God demolishes addictions that Christians harbor in their hearts. Brother, reading what you wrote just breaks my heart because you just can't fathom how racist and hurtful your words are. You just can't. I forgive you and I pray for you.

So why do you fight against the justice these football players are fighting for? Why do you want them to remain silent?

William, I am sorry to rile you. I am going by the topic title.

William, with all due respect, you are deflecting off the topic.

Injustice is always wrong. The issue being discussed here is specifically the injustice black men face just for being black. When my brothers in the church are being stopped just because they are black, I must stand with them in protest at the profiling being done. I trust them with watching over my children, but society immediately thinks they are villians. That is a tragedy and white Christians don't seem to care. All the can think about is their cotton colored sheet they call a flag. Do you see how disgusting that is to your black brothers in Christ?

Just war is an argument started by Augustine, centuries after the Bible was written. You cannot find any place on the Bible where God brings up the term "just war." Until Rome adopted Christianity as its State religion you see Christians living as pacifists. Not one writer advocates for warfare as a means of ending oppression or defeating evil. It wasn't a discussion in Christianity until Christians had political power. Think about how those two merging lead to killing those not deemed to be Christian. If you can't see that as anti-christ, I can't help you.

Again, the protest is not about the flag. That argument is being created by white people who are desperately trying to avoid looking at the injustice black men face in the United States. If you and I would work to end this injustice, no one would be protesting. You want this to end? Start by working to end the profiling of black men in the U.S. The real tragedy is that whites won't get off their barka loungers and fight for justice. Instead they create a red herring pout about the flag. Honestly, it's time for white America to grow up.

Did you see my post about Goshen College, a Christian Mennonite school that does not play the national anthem because it promotes warfare. As a pacifist school the song goes contrary to the ideals they believe the Bible promotes, specifically Matthew 5 & 6.

I think it shows respect for the thousands who have died struggling for justice and equality in this country while white America has turned a blind eye. Many, many people of color have fought and died for the right to be treated equally. That is the symbolism of the players who are kneeling. They look at their flag and they know society can do better.

People complained about black men sitting at the Montgomery Ward stools. Inconvenience is a part of a good protest.
