John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

    What I believe is that gays and lesbians are a shame to the covenant God created between Adam and Eve but if we reject gays and lesbians, how could they changed or transformed? We need to preach them gospel and the love of Jesus can transform them. Neither we can nor they can but Jesus can transform them. My request is not make them feel neglected but reveal to them the love of God which is in Christ Jesus that will transform them. I believe that God can change their desires and orientation too. Don't do discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

    That depends on what you mean by respect. Of course, I respect anyone's right to have another religion or to believe whatever they want. But if I believe that there is only one God, and only one path to salvation, as I do, then it wouldn't make sense for me to respect other religions that are wrong. If I am completely certain that two plus two equals five, and you believe that it equals six, I might be able to still respect you as a person but I won't respect your mathematical skills. It's much the same when it comes to religion, I think. I can still respect someone as a person, even if they believe in a religion that I believe to be wrong, but I cannot respect their choice of a religion or respect their opinion when it comes to religious questions. That does not mean that I have to treat them with disrespect or condemnation. Although I may be quite certain that they will be condemned unless they reconsider their beliefs, condemnation is not my task, and a condemning spirit will simply make me less effective as a witness. After all, you don't reach someone by telling them that they are stupid or that they are going to hell because they still have time to change the path that they are on, and my wish would be that they would do just that, and my hope would be that I might be able to help them along the way. Perhaps you are referring to those who do not respect anyone's religion, or religion in general, as there are many of those around. While it seems to me that a true atheist wouldn't care whether or not I believe in God, there are nevertheless many whom I describe as evangelical atheists, these people people who feel compelled to win others over the atheism. I grew up in a Christian home so even before I became a Christian, I was not an atheist, so I don't know for sure, but I can't imagine why an atheist would feel threatened by religion. It bothers me when someone does not believe because I know that the future for them won't be good, and that pains me, but why would an atheist care whether or not I believe in God? If there is no heaven, then I'm no going there whether I believe in it or not, and if there is no hell, I'm not going there either. But if there is a God, and there is a Satan, and there is a heaven, and there is a hell, then they are going to be there whether or not you believe in them or not. No, I don't understand that.

    I see that we are both in the same church and the same pew but there's just a bit of space between where we are seated. I do like the idea that you have chosen "God and Vain" for they are what the verse is pointed toward, directly after the word.......take. I find it amusing when people attempt to portray the verse as *saying* the Lords name in vain rather than *taking* the Lord's name in vain. To me it is a show as to where most people are at when it comes to their knowledge of the position they might have with the Father. One of focal points I'd like to peruse is written in John 1:12, "For as many as received him to them gave He the power to become sons of God; even to those who believe upon His name". This power,........to become sons of God is a crucial point especially when we go back to Exodus 20:7 and find the word Take. Just as a person who adopts a child gives their name to that child, or a groom gives his name to his bride it is the child or the bride who "takes" that name that was given to them. And......Just as it would be a terrible thing for the adopted child or the bride of the groom to misrepresent, cause damage, or treat that name as nothing (in vain) that was so lovingly given them, so it is with the Father. When we take the Lord's name in vain we are treating the name that was given us, the adopted sons and daughters of God and the bride of Christ, as if it meant nothing at all and their is no honor in it thereby showing dishonor to God the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit. It's pretty easy to see why He might get a bit uh..........upset...... Now, that's kind of the short version of it but hopefully it makes a simple point that can be built upon.     Immediately, two words come to mind, "God" and "vain", in contrast we are to carry the name of God in an honorable manner. The name of God is to be carried amongst us as the Levites lifted up and carried the Ark of the Covenant. Dared anyone even touch the Ark of the Covenant inappropriately? In our Christian life, the Lord's name should be carried not only honorably in speech but also in thoughts and deeds. God bless, William

    Ah ha! I told my wife you were a Westminister Pres and not one of the slackers!! An Extremely fine bit of research @William! My hat is indeed off to you! You certainly haven't left many rocks left unturned but now, just for the sake of promoting an even better expository, what one word would we deem as the most important in the 3rd commandment?

    Ken Anderson brought up so excellent points. Though I would have to say that there are even sects of Christianity, or what I feel is pseudo-Christianity that I don't respect. There are certain cults that are hiding under the guise of religion to justify marring multiple young teenager, even children, or who sacrifice animals to a pagan deity. The bible openly says to not tolerate those who practice witchcraft but if you listen to all the 'New-Age" nonsense of Wicca. Wicca is like a religion for witches. I can't exactly tolerate that around my family nor do I respect it because they are either worshiping Satan or a demon. Then there are Satanist who actually worship Satan. I won't support having it in public spaces when presented. Freedom of speech allows me to fight to not have something within the ears of my family. I think that there needs to be an understanding about what tolerance is in society. It means that we don't burn people alive or tie them to a log and hold them under water, it means that we don't prosecute people for their religion as long as they aren't breaking any laws. But that does not mean, that I have to agree to allow it to be taught in schools, in public places, or that I have to allow people who practice it buy from my business. I draw a line at the social expectation that I have to be 'okay' with everything and be one of those 'modern' Christians who's cool with everything. Tolerating people doesn't mean agreeing or even liking people who practice other religions.

    It's a really good thing to teach children to become generous, it's something they definitely have to learn at their early age because it's something that will absolutely turn them into better people once they grow up, give others no matter what you're going to get in exchange, do things well and good things are going to happen to you, god bless.

    There was a point in time when I would refuse to give money to a panhandler for fear of what they would do with it. One day, I was out to lunch with my spiritual mentor and he gave some change over to a panhandler. When I asked him if he was worried about the panhandler spending the money on drugs or alcohol instead of something sustaining, his answer was "It is our job to give to the needy when we are able, what they do with the money is between them and God." He explained that of course, he hopes the money will go to something useful in their lives, but he feels strongly that withholding money when he has it because they are panhandling is being judgmental of their situation. It is a difficult situation to be in, attempting not to judge them while at the same time hoping that the money you are handing over goes to something useful. While I rarely have any change to give over to panhandlers, his advice has stuck in my head and I will give change over and just pray that God moved me to give money to a panhandler that will use it for something useful.

    Unless I am missing something it appears this guy knows exactly what he wants. He is content with working on his career and views his relationship with your friend as nothing more than casual. He probably has no intention of getting married, and it would be a huge mistake to push him into it. She may love him, but if her ultimate desire, and possibly God's will for her life, is to get married and start a family, then she needs to cut him lose and start looking for the man God has in mind for her. Now if God actually has brought the right man into her life, then I would suggest that she, and you, to start praying that God will put it on this man's heart to start seeking God's will and not his own. Something missing from your post is any speculation as to if this man considers himself a Christian. If your friend is a Christian and he is not, or at the very least a luke-warm Christian, that would be another reason to let him go, as they would end up being unequally yolked in their relationship.

I find it very disturbing that many Christians who accept the rest of the Bible unconditionally will try to explain away the six days of creation in order to reconcile the Bible with the popular belief that the earth is millions of years old.     Hi all, I was browsing through the net and found this blog/forum interesting. Most people and most of us have problem believing about the Six day Creation because it directly impact so many aspect of what to believe as a professed and living Christianity. I am talking to someone claiming to be a Christian here! and a lot of time either we do not want to change our " way of living", or our" personal point of view" that contradict with this Biblical truth / biblical fact. first to believe in creation: imply that you owe your life to God Second refusing the six literal days creation : imply that the Ten Commandment is not correct the list can goes on an on on each point of the Doctrines or fundamental beliefs of Christianity. my point is the Bible for Christian is a whole and it make sens by taking it by faith without removing some point that disturb us. some comments talk about science ( the little that we know) to explain that it is not possible; think of it that way: asking a toddler who barely know that 1+1=2 or 3x3=9 to resolve an equation that contain logarithm or exponential... the poor kid will say it is impossible. and most of the motivation to discredit the Six Literal day Creation is because it disturb some NON biblical practice that many Professed Christian are trying to justify or trying to Ignore. May the Holy Spirit open our heart to see the truth.

    I wish to point out some verses that can tell us how God looks at tithes and offerings: Malachi 3:8-10 8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it. In my opinion, 10% is a small sum to give back to God considering that He alone gave us the ability to produce wealth. I give tithes of my income and allowances to the church I am attending in to support its operations and discipleship work. God doesn't need it, but the institutions and people who are doing God's work need the money to pay for the building, electricity, real estate taxes, allowances of church employees, charitable works, discipleship, brochures, etc. At one point in my life, I was out of job, was earning pennies, and had no money to give. That didn't stop me from contributing though. I'd volunteer as an usher, assistant, or admin staff, anything.

    @LeapOfFaith89 your friend's boyfriend is wasting her time. I've known men who aren't willing to commit and will often dump their girlfriends once they are pregnant. Since he has said he isn't willing to get married, then your friend should let him go. It's a tough choice that I must admit but it might save her some heartache in future. If the two love each other they should get married, if one isn't willing then that's a good enough reason to end the relationship because it [the relationship] is heading nowhere.

    If a guy can't take the relationship to the next level and the girl do want to get married, that is a clear sign that they're not on the same page. For guys, they can take forever before making that decision, but girls can't because the biological clock is ticking and the guy should know that. If I were in your friend's shoes, I would keep my options open and probably go on friendly dates with other guys. And yeah, I will not consent to a live-in arrangement, I am worth more than that.
