John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

I like to think that the media I was subjected to in the Airforce was correct. Seeing the effects of WMDs used against Civilians. I joined up in the Airforce during Desert Shield. It turned into Desert Storm when I was in basic. When I enlisted I believe now that I enlisted for the wrong reasons. I wanted to go to foreign lands and kill people. I wanted to kick some Iraqi butt. In God's wisdom I never saw a day overseas while in the Airforce. After discharge I found myself sleeping overnight at the Marine Recruiter's office in the parking lot waiting for them to open.

I sobered up. I thank God now that I did not take anyone's life with the intent that existed in my then heart. I beleive I enlisted for all the wrong reasons. But this I am confident of today. The rest of my brothers in arms or at least the presence of the United States in Iraq were there for justifiable reasons.

God bless,

William
