John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Here's a parable that's on my heart at the moment:

Mat 13:31-32
(31)  Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
(32)  Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

I've done a lot of gardening and agricultural work in my life...know a bit about seeds and what they produce.

Most seeds are small...mustard seeds tiny.

The kingdom of heaven is likened, not just to this tiny seed but to the way it grows and increases to become a perfect support structure for those desiring it.

What if faith really came in seed form. We know faith is from God and given to us through the word. What if all our belief systems were first just a seed from God. He would give us this tiny thing to see if we would nurture it into a life saving principle.

Most of the things I believe came as a little question that got me digging deeper and deeper into the word. Soon answers would come, but so would more questions and more digging. I believe this is what the mustard seed parable is telling us. If we take care of what God has given us, we show Him we want more. Seek and ye shall find.
