John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Ireland's Abortion Vote

I wanted to post a few thoughts on the subject without derailing @Becky's thread, so here I am.

The majority of the people of the Republic of Ireland voted to repeal Amendment 8 of the Irish Constitution https://www.taoiseach.gov.ie/eng/Historical_Information/The_Constitution/.

I'm not Irish and it really is none of my business what the people of Ireland choose to do with their unborn citizens, but I am a human being who believes that taking the lives of other human beings is reprehensible and repealing a protection for the unborn is a tragedy. I am also a Christian who believes that God gives a soul to a fetus as soon as s/he appears.

As an American, I am heartily devoted to the repeal of the United States Supreme Court's decision in Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion in my country. Tonight, I'll pray for the people in both countries and in all countries where the casual slaughter of the unborn is sanctioned by the government. We should have grown beyond the perception of new life as something easily discarded. We are, after all, made in the Image of God.

Yes, I have been praying about this as soon as I heard of it. Just one more country sanctioning the slaughter of the unborn. The world is spiralling out of control.

It is. I feel deeply sorry for the committed Christians on that island that did vote no and yet found themselves overruled.
