John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Do we agree that there is too much racism and bigotry in America?

Any racism and bigotry is too much.. i have experienced bigotry against me  because of my Christian faith.  I have experienced racism because of the color of my skin.

I've experienced it in every Asian country I have lived in.

I have also seen qualified native English speakers (non- Caucasians) rejected because they don't look "American" enough - whatever that means.

It's a worldwide problem. People are just too stupid to admit how much we are all alike - same sins, insecurities, arrogance, etc.

I can't comment on America, but I will say this, any amount of racism and/ or bigotry is too much. That being said, in our modern PC culture both of those terms are used far too readily and freely as a tool to silence discussion - there is much that is labelled as racist or bigoted that is not. I believe the USAs freedom of speech laws are similar to ours (UK) and although they are perhaps under threat today freedom of speech does include the freedom to say offensive things.

I wonder about racism, stereotyping, bigotry being an attitude some believers have. I have caught myself having an initial perception of another person that was wrong, and that misperception deriving from their race. It really bothers me when I realize that.

Quite frankly I find that the word "bigot", or any variation thereof, is overused and thus completely useless considering the actual definition.  It is also rather ironic when it is used.

As for racism, of course it is still a problem.  However, I have found, unfortunately, that stereotypes applied to certain groups actually hold true most of the time.

Personally I’ve witnessed very little of that. I suppose it depends on where one lives. Grew up in steel country, Monessen pa. All worked, played and socialized together. Didnt know what racism was until college.

Dad had black friends and so did I. One black co-worker married a white woman. So what. Still a good friend and so was Sharon.

Even today where I work there are blacks, co-workers and in management, one of my supervisors is black. Good guy.

I’m just not seeing it in my life. I suppose in the big cities it may be apparent. Dunno

Seems the only place I hear of it is in the news and politics.

So, not even the slimmest possibility of that?  Wish I could be so absolutely certain of everything.......

I am not absolutely certain of everything. But as to the existence of racism in America, even within the church, you really think it doesn't exist? Or you really don't know it exists?

Have I ever said such a thing that you know of?  Then why question me on it?
