John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

I was struggling with depression for a while and I started getting help. It has since went away. Though it can sneak up from time to time, it's not as bad as it used to be.

I'm glad to be here. Haven't been on in a while. I still don't follow any religions or spiritual beliefs, but I'm more clear-minded and focused on my goals so I no longer suffer as much.

In the past, I used to argue with Christians about everything. Butt I found that it just pushed away possible friends. So now I'd rather be open to discussion. Thanks for having me.

Nope. No questions. I understand the mindset which leads us to a belief in Jesus. It's quite beautiful really. It's just hard to get into that mindset when the world is so tangible.

Hi erealms, I wonder what you, as an atheist. don't believe about God. You say you understand the mindset . . . and that it's beautiful. In the ignorance of my youth, before I became a believer, I had decided that religion, e.g. Christianity was "a good idea", one to brainwash the masses so as to cause them to fear the consequences of bad behavior in society.
And then when I was 21 God spoke to my heart and I instantly believed in Him and I made it my mission to learn His thoughts which, I trusted the bible would teach. I had no mindset to rely upon and as you describe it I can only think if God doesn't exist, and if believers are deluded and believe a fairy tale, then there's really nothing beautiful about that. In fact, if that were the case it would be monstrous.

Yet that is exactly the case. However, I'm not talking about the belief in god. I'm talking about the mindset of righteousness. It's beautiful, though subjective.

In the Protestant faith Jesus Christ is righteous and none other are righteous. (Not addressing imputed righteousness)

Followers of Christ or Christians look to Jesus' life, example, teaching, etc. Jesus is the standard bearer for justice, morality, righteousness etc.
