John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Sad indeed.

All churches need to run criminal background checks on every person that works with all ages of people. I mean all ages! Our church does and our insurance pays for this background check. Unless a person is cleared they can not work with people from the very new born to our oldest adult.

It is terrible - but we have to remember that a lot of this is historic (and to some degree a witch hunt - though any guilty should be punished) - I'm not CofE (and never have been) but I know checks are in place nowadays. But remember checks are not enough on their own (all that means is that you haven't been caught) what is needed is robust protection policies within churches that have clear guidelines regarding physical contact, being alone with people etc and sadly this isn't just for the protection of the people we come into contact with - it is in regards to protecting ourselves from false accusations as well.
