John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

One of the things we here a lot of in Christians circles, is talk of guidance and either feeling led, or not feeling led. Often these terms are used sensibly and well - but I'm afraid I see them abused too often as well. I have come across who use these terms to force an issue - one couple I know demanded their church support them in missionary work because they 'felt led' to it - despite the fact they didn't have the right gifts, others hide being waiting for a leading before they will step out in obedience.

Now certainly there were special occurrences in scripture where special leading were given, but what was the normal source of guidance for the people of God?

I would suggest it was always the scripture, Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path. (Psa 119:105)

I believe most of the issues we have guidance, are perhaps more likely issues with obedience (we're simply not obeying scripture) - what do you all think?
