John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

One lost soul looking for the reason why?

I must confess that up until now I was not a religious person. I do not attend a Church and basically left it up to others to figure this all out. But for some unknown rime or reason I find myself deeply involved in biblical history and again I do not know why.

Having said that I hope I can find the answers I seek here, with the help of you, fellow Christians.

To begin with I stumbled across a web site by mistake while Googling and it disturbed me. It disturbed me enough to research its content and found what I found very troubling. Even troubling enough to come here for answers.

Attached is the site.

Hello and welcome tooldtocare,

God is Love. 1Jn_4:8: "He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love."

When you describe yourself like that, You always make provisions for the stranger. The stranger was grouped with the poor and needy. In our everyday life, we should have a charitable attitude.

Example: Deu. 24:19: "When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands." They weren't even allowed to cut down the corners of their fields. They were to be left for the same group.

The stranger is also compared to a neighbor:

Example: Luk 10:26,27: "He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself." Next they asked who was their neighbor. Jesus then gave them the parable of the "Good Samaritan" - a stranger that showed love to unfortunate man.

People used to ask me: "How do you give to God?" My answer, as a missionary, was always give to the poor and needy. :RpS_biggrin:

Yours,

Deade :RpS_thumbup:

Please don't trouble yourself, @Origen . I've got this. Age is no excuse for anybody to act like a fool, online or off.
