John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Hi everyone

Just need some advice...

If my parents don't want me to date someone based purely on race and I still do. Is not doing what my parents want going against the scripture and God?

Thank you

Hi Aldo7,

Are your parents Christian? What is the basis for their seemingly "racist" decision? If they are Christian is there a theological component? For example: https://www.christforums.org/article...m-christforums

Last question, is the person you are wishing to date a Christian?

God bless,

William

To honour your father and mother doesn't mean to give them complete authority over you, but to give them respect, give their words some weight. Christ tells us that some will have to separate from their family to follow and serve him, so if it honouring parents meant to do whatever they tell that would make being a Christian a sin if a persons parents forbid them to too.

Hi William

They are Christian however they don't agree with interracial relationships. They don't seem to have much of a basis for their decision. The person I want to date is a devoted Christian.

Thank you

I see that your age is 25-34 years. You are legally an adult. You are required to respect your parents and care for them if they are in need but you aren't required to obey all their commands as you were when you were a child.

Aldo7,

Asking your parents for permission to date someone at your age, seems a bit awkward..

My opinion is that you need to honor your parents that's biblical. You have some serious issues to face. Your parents are being unreasonable, but as long as you live with your parents you must abide by their rules, or you can find a place of your own, and be responsible for yourself. Going behind your parents back and dating this man is wrong.
