John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Moving the embassy to Jerusalem

Recommended Posts

On December 6 President Trump announced that the United States embassy in Israel would be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Since Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, this seems like a reasonable step to take, yet this decision has been met with protests all over the world. The United Nations voted 128 to 9 to condemn it. The Palestinians have objected and threatened violence because they consider Jerusalem to be their capital.

Israel is unique among the nations of the world. It began when God told Abraham to go to another land and promised to make a great nation of his descendants.

Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3 ESV)

Abraham had two sons, Isaac and Ishmael. The descendants of Isaac became the nation of Israel and fulfilled God’s promise to make Abraham a great nation. Jerusalem became the capital of Israel. God’s temple was there and it was where Jesus was crucified, fulfilling the promise that all families of the earth would be blessed in Abraham. When Jesus came to be the king of the Jews and the savior of the world the Jews rejected him. As a result Jerusalem was destroyed by the Romans and they were scattered among the nations. Yet God promised that in the future he would return them to their own land and restore them to their former position as his chosen people. The establishment of the modern state of Israel is a sign that he is beginning to fulfill his promise.

During the period between Jerusalem’s destruction and the establishment of Israel Satan started a new religion called Islam. A post in my blog, The sons of Abraham, explains this. The Muslims controlled Jerusalem for over a thousand years. During this time they built mosques such as the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and considered it one of their holy cities. This is the basis of their claim that Jerusalem belongs to them rather than to Israel.

When God sent Abraham into a new land he promised to bless those who blessed him. By honoring Israel’s claim to Jerusalem President Trump is blessing Abraham and his descendants. In return we can expect God to bless our country. By permitting abortion and same sex marriage we have called down God’s curses on ourselves and we need all the blessings we can get to offset these curses.
