John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Happy Christmas

Recommended Posts

There is disagreement about whether people should say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays." I don't want to get involved in that controversy so I will take one word from each phrase and wish everyone on the forum Happy Christmas.

How about happy Christ's birthday? God knows what is in our hearts. It doesn't matter how we address others in doing what we in our own hearts, know that we are doing.

Sometimes I think that the war on Christianity has influenced us. not as far as wither we call it Christmas or not, but how intently we say it, as if saying it a certain way will make it more precious to us in the eyes of others.
