John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

The name above every name

Recommended Posts

Ephesians 1:20-21 “Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.”

Philippians 2:9 “Wherefore God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:”

Confirmed in the Old Testament.....

Psalm 138:2 “I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy loving kindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy Word above all thy name.”

And again the name is confirmed here....

Revelation 19:13 “And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.”

Peace and God bless, Mark

And, just in time for Advent,

Isaiah 9:6 adds some more:

And his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
