John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Girls can now be boy scouts

Recommended Posts

The Boy Scouts have recently announced that girls can now join the Boy Scouts. Now this is for real, no joke. However the Girl Scouts are not pleased that this has happened. It seems that some Girl Scouts want to achieve the highly honored level of Eagle Scout. Less than 10% of all Boy Scouts even try to go after the Eagle Scout as it takes skill and real effort to stick with it and get the Eagle Scout Badge and position.

When I first read this I thought back to when I was in Boy Scouts, and to have a girl in the Boy Scouts would have been a dream come true. But for a girl in the Boy Scouts this might not be a very good idea, I think the distraction will be a serious problem. Just think of the logistics, say they are on a 5 mile hike and its brake time and you know boys just relieve them self any place they want. This just won't work for the girl. I can just imagine the Scout Master saying "keep your eyes looking right at that big rock and no looking back" . Or how about camping they will have to have a special private place for her tent where the boys will have a "Keep Out" sign.

I have to wonder if some boy will take the Girl Scouts to court and force the boys to join. That's how the girls have been forced upon the Boy Scouts. I believe there is more to this than just some girls wanting the Eagle Scout award. Just how has the transgendering issue effected how both girls and boys think about their gender, and boundaries that have been clearly defined in Scouting for more than 100 years.

Many young boys, just like me, started Scouting in Cub Scouts, and then went on the Boy Scouts. Scouting taught boys skills that helped prepared than for becoming young men. The motto "Be Prepared" has been a guiding principal all my life, thanks to the Boy Scouts. All Scouts learn to Honor God and County, learn First Aid, basic knots, how to use a Compass, and camping skills. What I learned in Scouting helped me become the man I am today.

In the last 40 years Scouting for both girls and boys is not as popular as it once was. Why? I am only guessing but I think playing electronic games perhaps is the biggest reason. Boys stay boys well into the late twenties. Its not uncommon for "boys" still living at home with mommy as long as the parents let then stay with them. I believe Boy Scouts encouraged me to grow up and become a man much earlier than what happens now. Not only that but after I got out of High School there was a Draft going on in large number for a war. Many young men were drafted shortly out of High School, and many died within a year after graduation. Today we have no active draft and boys can stay boys a lot longer.

I believe many fathers are lazy and have not taken the time to nurture their boys into manhood. There is nothing wrong with a boy of 12 to learn what work is, the importance of understanding that men are called by God the work, and learn to tithe, save, and begin to buy some of their personal needs and wants. Its important that boys begin to desire to be married. A Christian father tales the time to share his testimony by living it openly before his family, A christian father takes the time to present sexuality to his son in purity, by example as a faithful husband. A son learns from his father by example. Unless a young boy has friends that are girls and dates Christian young ladies that also have been raised as a Christian he will never learn how to treat a woman.

The Boy Scouts should remain for boys only and so should the Girl Scouts be for girls only. To watch this change only eliminates the distinction between the two genders.

Any thoughts?

It's ridiculous liberal nonsense! They should just advance the girl scouts so the girls can reach the equivalent of the eagle scouts, instead of changing the boy scouts into something it's not. It's just stupid how people think the rules should change because they feel like it.

They should just extend the Eagle Scouts program through the Girl Scouts rather than mixing them, and make sure that equivalent qualifications are available. I find your example odd though, as there's no reason girls can't do a five-mile hike. That was our middle school's (5th-7th grade?) cross-country run distance and we did it weekly. Using bushes for small children is sometimes necessary - the phrase about 'going in the bushes' does apply to both genders.

Girls were allowed into the Scouts over here because it could be proved that the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides organisations weren't equivalent offerings. Over the years the Girl Guides here morphed away from what they were designed to be. From experience, while the Scouts were learning woodcraft and camping, the Guides (who did this originally and were founded to teach girls it) tended not to do anything at all at their meetings and were just expected to sit around. I know quite a few girls who were kicked out for doing sport, for example. It even lead to a few groups of Girl Scouts being founded as an alternative.

I suspect the numbers are dropping because it is equalising the wrong way, towards the Guides' model. Health and Safety laws mean that activities like kayaking or camping are now very difficult for either group to do, and the badges that used to be things you wouldn't learn in every day life are now designed to be skills that children often already have to a higher level than the badge designers - e.g. replacing learning semaphore and morse with using a mobile phone. It's not exciting anymore.

My example of the five mile hike is that one girl hiking with say 25 boys ages 11 to 16 is not a good situation. Boys at that age are full of hormones, their talk and actions in front of a girl are hard to control.. Were are not talking about Christian boys, we are talking boys that have already most likely seen porn and have a high sexual tension, no place for a girl in Boy Scouts,

I'm used to Scouts being aged 10 to 14. There are actually now four scouts associations in the UK, depending on what their focus is on some are co-ed and some are signle-sex.

I'm surprised to hear you say that Scouts aren't good Christian boys though. They take an oath to serve God*, and the church was a big part of the associations I was part of.

(*Just found out that in 2013 some of the associations removed the oath to "do their duty to God" and replaced it with "develop my own beliefs". Baden Powell would be spinning in his grave.)

Not all Boy Scouts are even "good" say nothing about being "Christian". Many parents used Scouting as a way to get the kid out of their hair, or even the Court system would make a boy join and he was required to behave or go to Juvenal retention. Perhaps you may have not been around young boys, but puberty brings huge changes and many become very sexually charged, and on over night camping, its no place for girls. Some young boys do not behave like young gentlemen.

Just to further my point today the average age when a boy first starts watching porn is 7 to 8. If this is the case these very young children get hooked at such an early age, and for many it becomes a life long addiction. Is it any wonder our world is so messed up with divorce, sexual assault, rape?
