John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Why Christians oppose same sex marriage

Recommended Posts

Whenever someone opposes same sex marriage he is accused of hating gays and his opinions are often called hate speech. Proponents of same sex marriage have attacked those who oppose it and have caused some to lose their jobs and have their businesses ruined. Some people do hate gays but Christians who oppose same sex marriage do so because we care about gays and want to protect them the harm that they will experience.

To see why this is so we need to look at what the Bible says about marriage. The first marriage was between the first man and the first woman.

Then the man said,

“This at last is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.”

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. (Genesis 2:23,24 ESV)

Marriage is a permanent union between a man and a woman. It serves two purposes. The first concerns the welfare of the children it produces.

You cover the Lord‘s altar with tears, with weeping and groaning because he no longer regards the offering or accepts it with favor from your hand. But you say, “Why does he not?” Because the Lord was witness between you and the wife of your youth, to whom you have been faithless, though she is your companion and your wife by covenant. Did he not make them one, with a portion of the Spirit in their union? And what was the one God seeking? Godly offspring. So guard yourselves in your spirit, and let none of you be faithless to the wife of your youth. (Malachi 2:13-15 ESV)

A marriage is intended not just to produce children but to produce godly children. That means the children must be trained and the persons best qualified to do this are the child’s biological parents. Some marriages don’t produce children and some parents are abusive or otherwise unfit to carry out their responsibilities but in the majority of cases a child is better off being raised and trained by his own parents.

The second reason for marriage is to illustrate the relationship between God and those who worship him. Even a marriage without children fulfills this purpose.

In the Old Testament Israel is spoken of as the wife of God.

For your Maker is your husband,

the Lord of hosts is his name;

and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer,

the God of the whole earth he is called. (Isaiah 54:5 ESV)

The worship of idols is referred to as adultery.

For they have committed adultery, and blood is on their hands. With their idols they have committed adultery, and they have even offered up to them for food the children whom they had borne to me. (Ezekiel 23:37 ESV)

In the New Testament the church, which is made up of all who have put their faith in Christ, is called the bride of Christ.

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.

“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.(Ephesians 5:22-33 ESV)

Here the responsibilities of a husband and wife are explained by comparing them with the relationship between Christ and the church. Christ loved the church and gave is life for her; a husband must love his wife and be willing to die for her if necessary. The church submits to Christ; a wife must submit to her husband.

God is always represented by the male member of a marriage and his worshipers by the female. A marriage between two men and two women could not illustrate this relationship.

Consider the consequences of ignoring God’s commands.

Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ESV)

Engaging in sexual activity with someone of the same sex is a sin that will keep people from inheriting the kingdom of God. Anyone who supports same sex marriage in encouraging people to enter into a relationship that will lead to their being eternally condemned to Hell.

Woe to those who call evil good

and good evil,

who put darkness for light

and light for darkness,

who put bitter for sweet

and sweet for bitter! (Isaiah 5:20 ESV)

We live in an age where those who encourage a lifestyle that will lead to eternal punishment are said to be loving while those who warn against such a lifestyle are accused of hate.

There is hope for those who have sinned.

And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. (1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV)

They can be forgiven and cleansed from their sins but only if they acknowledge that what they do is a sin and put their faith in Jesus Christ. Before they can do this someone must tell them they are sinners and must also tell them how they can be forgiven. Many who believe same sex marriage is wrong are afraid to speak out against it because they fear the reaction of other people. If you are one of those people, remember that whatever suffering you will experience is limited to this life; those who continue in sin will suffer eternally.

Those who support same sex marriage think they are actually helping gays. The reason for this is that they have rejected God’s standards of right and wrong and have allowed themselves to be deceived by Satan. Satan is the real force behind the move to accept same sex marriage.

I have a post in my blog about how Satan has deceived people on this subject.
