Christian Fellowship

John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Eastern Lightning

........is a horrendous cult that originated in China. Their claim is that Jesus has returned, that He is a woman, and that He has returned to "answer questions" for folks in China. Yesterday it invaded Christian Forums, another Christian site. I reported it, and finally observed that it has been blocked. Look up "Eastern Lightning." Don't let it invade here!!

They are a cult, a dangerous one actually. They are officially known as "The Church of Almighty God" aka "Eastern Lightning", and they do indeed believe that the Lord is living among us in China, even as I'm typing this post. The twist is, this time He's a She :RpS_blink: (as has already been mentioned).

The problem, according to one of my missionary friends in China, is the lack of sound Biblical/theological/doctrinal teaching, which results in unsound preaching and beliefs ... which results in cults like Eastern Lightning (they are hardly the only one :RpS_sad:).

Never heard of this group. Sounds like a cult.
Bunch of nuts if you ask me.

The tragedy, of course, is that the Chinese are falling for it, and we in the USA make note of how Christianity is spreading across China. Bummer!

Yeah, this is far from Christianity so hopefully it is not counted.

BTW, they use the name, "Eastern Lightning", because they believe that their teaching is the fulfillment of Matthew 24:27, 1. because their message to the world concerns the Messiah's return and 2. because their message goes out to the world from China.

What they apparently fail to recognize is the fact that their central, "eastern lightning", teaching (about the Lord's return) directly contradicts what the Bible teaches us about His return and how it will actually occur.

Matthew 24

23
If anyone says to you, ‘Behold, here is the Christ,’ or ‘There He is
,’
do not believe him
.

24 For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.

25 Behold, I have told you in advance.

26 So if they say to you, ‘Behold, He is in the wilderness,’ do not go out, or, ‘Behold, He is in the inner rooms,’
do not believe them
.

27
For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be
.

The Lord's return (when it happens) will be like lightning streaking across the sky from the east to the west such that everyone can/will see it/know about it at the same time. IOW, no one is going to have to tell anyone else when He returns because we will ALL know it when He does. So if someone says that He's already returned (like this cult does), and that He is over here or over there, "do not believe them".

Yours and His,

David

p.s. - we also know (from this passage and many others) that when He does return, He will still be a "He" :RpS_rolleyes:

Agreed, it is going to be a loud and visual event from the clouds and sky like never seen before on Earth.

We need to pray that Christians in China will have the opportunity for sound teaching so they can refute cults like this.

They are on 'The Word Network' (channel 292 here in northern New Jersey) from 3pm to 3:30pm on Sunday. I have it on right now and man it is some weird stuff. It really troubles me that this network that I think claims to be Christian allows them to spread their toxin.

Yes, when does a person's profession of faith pale in comparison to contradictory theology? R.C. Sproul spoke of certain peoples that are saved by contradictions, because if we take them strictly verbatim then inconsistent theology calls into question whether a profession is genuine.

We had a major problem with Eastern Lightening at one time. Member after member would join this board and create multiple accounts they'd then converse among themselves and dialogue an appeal to more people.

If anything, it shows that there is a hunger for God, and Christians are to speak the truth in love to counter-act the false gods the world conjures up.

Luke 10:2

In a way I agree as we should always speak the truth in love as our motivation and intent.

False gods are an idol and the natural man's heart is an idol factory.

So many people project upon God an image of their own. When faced with the God of Scripture they abandon any notion of God for an idol of self.

In this way I don't believe most people "hunger" for God.

The natural man prefers ear tickling and much rather be spoken words which justify himself. They'd rather not be subjected to Law which exposes depravity.

What matters in a lot of minds is that they "feel virtuous".

One of my favorite kings in the OT was Jehu and I really enjoy reading about his furious drive to rid Israel of idol worship.

In regards to the natural, unconverted state of man, absolutely.

I was thinking more of the Chinese Christian church when I punched that response out - probably should have articulated that a little better. 🙂

If for example, there is a Scriptural standard of the essentials to our faith which are conveyed by say the Nicene Creed, then these cultists are actually outside orthodox Christianity and are nothing more than false converts. They are the natural man coming together and worshiping self idols under the label of Christianity. I can't help but think that a lot of bodies are nothing more than book clubs, seeing a lot of once Christian denominations abandon the essentials of the faith but not the Christian umbrella label (Christian can umbrella not only denominations, but also cults and sects as well as apostate bodies).

Once they abandon the essentials of faith, they stop being Christ-like. Christ never once abandoned his message or stray from the central message or work that the Father sent Him to accomplish.

Indeed, after reading some rather disturbing Q&A from some of those masquerading as priests and leaders, it is no small wonder why so many have gone astray -- they've been lead there, and continue to flock to false teachings to satisfy the idols of their own design.
