John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Hi

Since I became a Christian last year I believe God has helped me overcome depression and immorality but I still struggle with anger and hatefulness. Please pray to God asking him to relieve me from this negativity. Thank you!

I will pray for you. We all face this issue - anger and hatefulness. I myself am not able to control these feelings. May the Good Lord give us strength to overcome our weaknesses. Amen.

Truly "treasuring" God's word in your heart/mind can have more of a profound effect on the sin in your life than you can imagine, 1) because it replaces all the garbage that's in your mind with something FAR better, which helps you think about/dwell on far better things .. cf Philippians 4:8, and 2) because every time you try to sin the HS hits you with several of the verses you've memorized :)

Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee"

My twin sons scooted close to one another at the breakfast table as I poured milk over their cereal. Bouncing off of each other, they bumped arms and laughed. My toddler banged her hands on the table, screaming for her sippy cup, while my older son demanded I locate his drawing from yesterday. One of my twins erupted, “Hey! Stop touching me! Stop sitting close to me! Mooomm!” My anger boiled over into a yell before we’d even finished the first bites of breakfast: “Guys, knock it off!” Guilt set

    • John Calvin on Prayer: 6 Reasons Why You Should Pray

Is it even necessary to pray? This question is sometimes asked today. Apparently, it was also popular over 500 years ago.   In his famous book Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin dedicates extensive time on prayer, and gives plenty of reasons why you and I should pray.   “But someone will say,” Calvin writes, “does God not know even without being reminded, both in what respect we are troubled, and what is expedient for us, so that it seems in a sense that it may be superflous

    • How Does a Mom Pray as a Calvinist?

How does a mom, who believes that God is sovereign over salvation, find any hope for her children? How does she not live in fear about the state of their souls every day? If only those chosen by God find eternal life in him, can she sleep at night if none of them has yet professed faith? In a recent interview about Calvinism, Andy Stanley—senior pastor of North Point Community Church in Atlanta—posed several questions as he critiqued Calvinism from several angles. In one particular segment, he
