John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Pray for discernment

Recommended Posts

Friends, let's pray for all of our brothers who don't know the best course to go on in their lives: God.

Many of them are discredited, without faith and without having a way to go. This is very worrying because they may end up going the wrong way.

We have to show them that God exists, and that He is everywhere, looking for us all.

Let's make them believe in the Savior.

God bless you all, my friends.

    • How Discernment Is Like Thrifting

The smell is unmistakable and hits you as soon as you walk through the door. It’s not exactly unpleasant, but it is distinct: the smell of mothballs and dust, of worn textiles and decaying books. It’s the smell of time and humanity and a hundred thousand different lives assembled in one place. It’s the smell of the thrift store. I suppose the eclectic nature of thrift stores could be unsettling, even disorienting, for some people. After all, there’s no predictable supply, no reliable order, no

    • John Calvin on Prayer: 6 Reasons Why You Should Pray

Is it even necessary to pray? This question is sometimes asked today. Apparently, it was also popular over 500 years ago.   In his famous book Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin dedicates extensive time on prayer, and gives plenty of reasons why you and I should pray.   “But someone will say,” Calvin writes, “does God not know even without being reminded, both in what respect we are troubled, and what is expedient for us, so that it seems in a sense that it may be superflous

    • How Does a Mom Pray as a Calvinist?

How does a mom, who believes that God is sovereign over salvation, find any hope for her children? How does she not live in fear about the state of their souls every day? If only those chosen by God find eternal life in him, can she sleep at night if none of them has yet professed faith? In a recent interview about Calvinism, Andy Stanley—senior pastor of North Point Community Church in Atlanta—posed several questions as he critiqued Calvinism from several angles. In one particular segment, he

    • Why does God need me to pray, for what, who, and how?

Why does God need me to pray, for what, who, and how?   God wants me to let Him awaken and open the ears of my heart so that I can hear God’s Spirit speak to me through His word.   Isa 50:4 The Lord GOD…awakens my ear to hear as the learned (His disciple). Rev 2:7 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says…   Have you chased down a truth in the Bible recently, with your heart? Let’s do that today, let’s chase down the truth of why God needs prayer, an
