John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Recommended Posts

No one was injured when rockets were fired from the Sinai in Egypt on Wednesday, but five people were treated for shock according to Israeli officials.

The Times of Israel reports:

The Iron Dome missile defense system intercepted at least three rockets headed for the southern city of Eilat late Wednesday night, the army said.

At least one other rocket was not shot down by the missile defense battery as it was headed towards an open field, a military spokesperson said.

The rockets were fired from the Sinai in Egypt, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Iron Dome is something of a miracle. I hope the poor people treated for shock are OK now. Most Israelis are pretty quiet about it, but I have long suspected it's stressful living over there...
