John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Has anyone else been reading these? They are set in 7th century Ireland, but one of the main background themes is the struggle of the Church of St John against the encroaching Penetentials of Rome (today known as the Catholic Church). Pelagianism vs. Augustine also comes up frequently.


The focus is more on the mysteries than the religion, but with a Saxon monk, and an Irish nun as the lead characters it might be of interest to people here. For those familiar with the Catholic church as the main European church, the Church of St John had some very different beliefs to the modern day, including married clergy at all levels and monks and nuns in conhospital or mixed gender monasteries.
