John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

What is a Basic Human Right?

Recommended Posts

Thank you for the article. I think most people refering to Human Rights are basing it off the UN declaration, which I have linked below, and which is very different to the Biblical ones the article lists. Many of the things in the UN version are things easy to provide in the developed world, but not so easy in poorer countries since they require societal infrastructure. The article's Biblical ones seem more basic and universal because they work on an individual level and anyone can follow them.

Also democracy is by the UN definition, a human right (Article 21). It is interesting to note that people protesting against the outcome of a valid democratic election are actually breaching the human rights of everyone who voted a different way to them. There is no 'human right' to guarantee a government of their choice.

That just shows that when unbelievers try to come up with a standard that is already in the bible, without using said bible, they end up using the collectively accepted opinion. And more often than not they fail in their attempt, and the rest of the secular world suffers for it.
