John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

This old Bible ...

Recommended Posts

I would imagine we all have an old Bible or two that is special to us in one way or another. I thought it might be fun to share pictures and stories of said. I'll get us started. In chronological order:

The old German Bible has been in the family for a long time. I don't know for how long, but it is dated 1902 inside. It is the Martin Luther translation:

This one was given to my mother from my grandmother in the early 1960s and then to me in the 1990s. It is KJV.

Finally, the one my wife gave me when we were newly wed is special too. There is a message saying I can only post so many pictures, so I couldn't add those.

Do you have any to share? Thank you.
