John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

1John 2:18 AntiChrists

AntiChrists

1John 2:18 Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

John's readers were apparently informed concerning the antichrist and end times events, so he doesn't elaborate upon such things here. There is a specific person who is prophesied to come just a few years prior to Christ's return. Paul writes of this man in 2Thess 2:3-10. In the book of Revelation he is referred to as "the beast." But there are also antichrists who act as forerunners, being present throughout the history of the church.

By "the last hour" I think John is referring to the church age. It is the last epic - the last dispensation - prior to the Millenial Kingdom.

In God's clock we are living in the last hour before Jesus returns. To man it might seem like a long time but to God, 1,000 years are like one second. And right from the days of the apostles there have been people who've been opposing Christ, anti-Christs and false apostles/false prophets who were misleading people and we still have many amongst us today. While we should be looking out for the antichrist we also must beware of the antichrist's minions who are leading many Christians astray.
