John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

PRAY FOR GROWTH IN KNOWLEDGE AND DISCERNMENT

Php 1:9-11 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Love for fellow Christians is one of the primary characteristics of a Christian. In fact "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers. Anyone who does not love remains in death." 1John 3:14 "And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." 1John 4:21 Jesus himself said, "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." John 13:35

But the actual practice of love can be difficult to grasp. For WHAT in particular do you do? And how can you DISCERN the real needs to be met, and the way in which to meet them? Thus Paul prays this prayer. And so also should we. For applied love is one based upon a proper understanding of the circumstances. It's actions are based upon one's discernment of the real needs and how to properly meet those needs. And God is willing and eager to help us in these areas.

It's one thing to have a feeling of love, but where the rubber meets the road, knowledge and discernment are necessary.
