John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

GIVE THANKS FOR FELLOWSHIP IN THE GOSPEL

Php 1:3-5 I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.

While some Christians feel they are in competition with other Christians in the work of the ministry of the gospel, and some churches or Christian ministries feel they are in competition with others, not so with Paul - and not so with those of a matured faith. For we are one body, "joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." Eph 4:16 And thus there should be a team spirit among Christians - a spirit of encouragement and appreciation for each doing their part.

But note also that Paul was not thanking the Phillipians. Rather he was thanking God. Why? Because their involvement in the ministry of the gospel was evidence the God was working among them. Conversely if you know of Christians who are not involved in the ministry of the gospel, that's also something to pray about. For in some significant way things are not as they should be in their life. But thank God when you see progress in their ministering.
