John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

Proverbs: The Fear of the Lord

Recommended Posts

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Pr 1:7   The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline.
Pr 9:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
Pr 15:33  The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor.

Jesus said, "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him." Luke 12:4,5

And Peter writes, "If you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear" 1Peter 1:17

Therefore let us evaluate our attitude towards God as to whether or not we truly fear the Lord. For one cannot mature in the Christian life without such an attitude.

I have a friend who quotes that one on a frequent basis. He has heard this short story of mine.

Some years ago we were give two yellow lab puppies, maybe 4-6 months old.

Not being one to keep dogs in the house, we kept them on the front porch at night.

We live in the country and dogs get dirty .

When we came out on the porch in the mornings they were so enthusiastic and eager they would cower a little and pee everywhere. Perhaps they had been mistreated by the previous owner, I don’t know. What I do know is I found no pleasure in this behavior and the resulting urine. I passed them on to someone else.

I’m not equating believers with yellow labs, I am in awe of God’s majesty and revere His greatness. He is it, the “I am.”

I tend to think of it like this;

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom

Perfect love casts out fear

Come boldly before the throne of God

Fear also means, reverence, terror, awesome, respect, piety, revered.

It is Gods perfect love for me that makes the relationship possibIe. He is Love, He is my father. He is not some troll up there somewhere just waiting to scream, "Gotcha" when I make mistakes. He made the sacrifice for the purpose of being in a loving relationship with us, not so he could watch us cower.

The proper fear of the Lord is a gift:

Jeremiah 32:40

I will make with them an everlasting covenant, that I will not turn away from doing good to them. And I will put the fear of me in their hearts, that they may not turn from me.

Yeah, the more I get to know Him, well, He's always giving. He really is something. What a loving God.

If, you do not mind would you elaborate a little more?

First of all, Jesus is all throughout the scriptures, seeing He is the Word manifested. The Proverbs talk of His wisdom, wealth, and work, Solomon being the richest man that ever lived. Jesus had His own house and was very successful in what He put His hands to.

 Amen!

And a magnificent treasure (Isaiah 33:6).
