John Calvin puts forward a very simple reason why love is the greatest gift: “Because faith and hope are our own: love is diffused among others.” In other words, faith and hope benefit the possessor, but love always benefits another. In John 13:34–35 Jesus says, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Love always requires an “other” as an object; love cannot remain within itself, and that is part of what makes love the greatest gift.

I guess that is a church?

We attend a reformed Presbyterian Church.

Big difference in beliefs.

Indeed, the PCUSA is Presbyterian in church government but not Reformed in theology. Back before the 1940s the PCUSA was probably the largest Reformed Presbyterian denomination in the United States. The PCUSA as it transitioned to liberalism abandoned its creeds and confessions and the very Reformers which vowed to uphold them and realign the church back to orthodoxy were then being disciplined. At that time a few bodies began to break off into other denominations such as the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and sister Presbyterian Church of America.
